    Description: Sickle cell anemia is the most common heritable hematological disease, yet no curative treatment exists for this disorder. Moreover, the intricacies of globin gene expression have made the development of treatments for hemoglobinopathies based on gene therapy difficult. An alternative genetic approach to sickle cell therapy is based on RNA repair. A trans-splicing group I ribozyme was used to alter mutant beta-globin transcripts in erythrocyte precursors derived from peripheral blood from individuals with sickle cell disease. Sickle beta-globin transcripts were converted into messenger RNAs encoding the anti-sickling protein gamma-globin.     Description: Human reovirus requires an activated Ras signaling pathway for infection of cultured cells. To investigate whether this property can be exploited for cancer therapy, severe combined immune deficient mice bearing tumors established from v-erbB-transformed murine NIH 3T3 cells or human U87 glioblastoma cells were treated with the virus. A single intratumoral injection of virus resulted in regression of tumors in 65 to 80 percent of the mice. Treatment of immune-competent C3H mice bearing tumors established from ras-transformed C3H-10T1/2 cells also resulted in tumor regression, although a series of injections were required.     Description: Three-dimensional gyrokinetic simulations of microturbulence in magnetically confined toroidal plasmas with massively parallel computers showed that, with linear flow damping, an asymptotic residual flow develops in agreement with analytic calculations. Nonlinear global simulations of instabilities driven by temperature gradients in the ion component of the plasma support the view that turbulence-driven fluctuating zonal flows can substantially reduce turbulent transport.     Description: Mitochondrial cytochrome bc1 complex performs two functions: It is a respiratory multienzyme complex and it recognizes a mitochondrial targeting presequence. Refined crystal structures of the 11-subunit bc1 complex from bovine heart reveal full views of this bifunctional enzyme. The "Rieske" iron-sulfur protein subunit shows significant conformational changes in different crystal forms, suggesting a new electron transport mechanism of the enzyme. The mitochondrial targeting presequence of the "Rieske" protein (subunit 9) is lodged between the two "core" subunits at the matrix side of the complex.     Description: Contrary to the prediction of the Z-scheme model of photosynthesis, experiments demonstrated that mutants of Chlamydomonas containing photosystem II (PSII) but lacking photosystem I (PSI) can grow photoautotrophically with O2 evolution, using atmospheric CO2 as the sole carbon source. Autotrophic photosynthesis by PSI-deficient mutants was stable both under anaerobic conditions and in air (21 percent O2) at an actinic intensity of 200 microeinsteins per square meter per second. This PSII photosynthesis, which was sufficient to support cell development and mobility, may also occur in wild-type green algae and higher plants.     Notes: This paper describes the integration of a feedforward neural network with a real-time adaptive control technique to model an assembly cell for computer keyboards. The simulation model is able to undertake real-time forecasting of the expected behaviour of the cell, and also able to display in real time the current status of the assembly cell. The potential of integrating artificial neural networks into simulation together with an on-line real-time interface between the simulation model and the real-world system is investigated in this study. A simulation model was built in SIMAN with a neural network written in NeuralWork Professional II Plus embedded in the model to allow training and testing of the network. The control of the cell was achieved through a third-party program written in C that interfaces directly to the cell.

    Notes: Abstract The electrochemical behaviour of a hydrogen/oxygen gas mixture at platinum electrodes in contact with a solid polymer electrolyte (Nafion 115) was studied in two modes: hydrogen enrichment and fuel cell. In the hydrogen enrichment (purification) mode, i/V(V being the applied voltage) characteristics were identified for the electrochemical cell arranged so that the gas mixture with varying ratios which contacts the anode was purified to pure hydrogen gas that was released at the cathode. In the fuel cell mode, V/i (V being the terminal voltage) characteristics were determined for the cell which utilized the gas mixture with varying ratio at the anode and pure oxygen at the cathode. The effect of the decrease in the mole fraction of hydrogen (χH2) on the current density or the terminal voltage was particularly severe for χH2〈0.6. The drop was analysed employing terms such as oxygen reduction current, oxygen adsorption and the change of e.m.f. (electromotive force) due to the decrease in the partial pressure of the hydrogen gas.

    Notes: Abstract The aim of this experimental study is to investigate the heat (mass) transfer of a rotating disk with an impinging circular jet. To facilitate the experiments, the naphthalene sublimation technique was employed. In order to analyze the results, measurements of the heat (mass) transfer of a stationary disk with an impinging jet and a rotating disk without jet impingement were also made. From the experimental results, it is found that the heat (mass) transfer are precisely divided into three regimes, namely the impingement dominated regime; the mixed regime and the rotation dominated regime. Correlation of Sherwood number of a rotating disk with jet impingement is also proposed in the present work.
