Notes: Abstract This paper presents the reflections of the Working Group of which the tasks were to examine the non-rigid Earth nutation theory. To this aim, six different levels have been identified: Level 1 concerns the input model (giving profiles of the Earth's density and theological properties) for the calculation of the Earth's transfer function of Level 2; Level 2 concerns the integration inside the Earth in order to obtain the Earth's transfer function for the nutations at different frequencies; Level 3 concerns the rigid Earth nutations; Level 4 examines the convolution (products in the frequency domain) between the Earth's nutation transfer function obtained in Level 2, and the rigid Earth nutation (obtained in Level 3). This is for an Earth without ocean and atmosphere; Level 5 concerns the effects of the atmosphere and the oceans on the precession, obliquity rate, and nutations; Level 6 concerns the comparison with the VLBI observations, of the theoretical results obtained in Level 4, corrected for the effects obtained in Level 5. Each level is discussed at the state of the art of the developments.

Notes: Abstract Singles and coincidence charge distributions are combined to illustrate the mechanism for the 220-MeV40Ar+238U reaction. It is found that the apparent peak in the coincidence fragment distribution corresponding toZ=82 (A=208) can be explained in terms of the fissionability of the target-like fragments produced in deep-inelastic collisions rather than as a manifestation of shell effects in compound-nucleus fission, as has been postulated for a similar system.

Notes: Abstract The relative importance of three different influences of independent-particle shell structure on the nucleon transport process during heavy-ion collisions are discussed. Results of calculations for the 620-MeV86Kr +197Au system are presented.

Notes: Abstract Shape factor analysis of the beta transitions in149Pm is carried out for the first time, employing an intermediate image beta ray spectrometer. The ambigous situation arising from the disagreement between reported values in end point energies and intensities of the beta transitions is clarified. An attempt was made to evaluate the NME, for the 780 keV beta transition, using Simms formalism.

Notes: Abstract The connection between the characteristic features of reactions involving very heavy target-projectile combinations (e.g.86Kr+197Au) and lighter systems (e.g.40Ar+natAg) is discussed. Evidence for an empirical scaling law based upon the ratioE/B (center-of-mass kinetic energy to Coulomb barrier) is presented. This scaling is justified in terms of semiquantitative arguments whereby the different charge and angular distribution patterns from light and heavy target-projectile combinations are correlated with different lifetime regimes for the “intermediate complex” as it diffuses along the mass-asymmetry coordinate.

Notes: Abstract In the standard treatment of weak-coupling superconductors, the pair potential enters as a nondiagonal but local potential. It is shown that for a pure, weak-coupling, bulk, single-crystal superconductor the quasiparticle wave functions are then Bloch functions and the self-consistent pair potential is periodic in space with the periodicity of the crystal structure. The relation between this periodic character of the pair potential and energy gap structure is discussed, and it is pointed out that energy gap structure of the general character expected appears to have been observed. The validity of a local pair potential is also briefly considered.

Notes: Abstract. Environmental concentrations and biological effects of certain metals and organic compounds found in wood preservatives were examined. The study focused on leachates from private residential docks in South Carolina tidal creeks. Copper, chromium, arsenic, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in composite samples of surficial sediments and naturally occurring oyster populations (Crassostrea virginica) from creeks with high densities of docks, and from nearby reference creeks with no docks. In some cases, metal concentrations in sediments and oysters were higher immediately adjacent to dock pilings than they were elsewhere in the same creek. Sediments from most sites had concentrations of metals and total PAHs which were below levels reported to cause biological effects, however. Solid-phase Microtox® bioassays using whole sediments and rotifer bioassays using sediment pore water showed no significant differences in acute toxicity between creeks with and without docks. Oysters growing directly on dock pilings had significantly higher concentrations of copper than oysters growing at least 10 m away; however, there was no significant difference in the physiological condition of these oysters. Four-day field bioassays measuring percent survival of mummichogs (Fundulus heteroclitus), mud snails (Ilyanassa obsoleta), juvenile red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus), and juvenile white shrimp (Penaeus setiferus) showed no significant differences between sites near to and distant from newly constructed docks. Hatchery-reared oysters showed no significant differences between dock and reference sites in percent survival, growth, or bioaccumulation of metals after six weeks of exposure. The results suggest that, in estuarine environments with a moderate tidal range (1.5–2.0 m), wood preservative leachates from dock pilings have no acutely toxic effects on four common estuarine species, nor do they affect the short-term survival or growth of juvenile oysters.
