Notizen: Abstract Larval damselflies frequently engage in aggressive interactions that may increase their risk of fish predation. To test this we analyzed the behavior of larval Ischnura verticalis exposed to both conspecifics and fish predators. Larvae in the presence of conspecifics oriented, struck, and swam more but crawled less compared to solitary larvae; the presence of fish reduced, or tended to reduce, all behaviors. Fish struck more at interacting larvae compared to noninteracting larvae. Increased attack rate by fish likely reflects the increase in the very active swimming behavior by larvae and suggests a conflict between antipredator behaviors. Swimming is an appropriate response to avoid predation by odonate larvae which normally ambush prey but is clearly dangerous when fast-swimming fish that cue in on movement are nearby.

Notizen: Abstract Odonate larvae are important predators in the littoral zone of freshwater systems, and in an effort understand their population dynamics, researchers have described and analyzed many of their behaviors. The behavior we call abdomen wave has been considered to be both an aid to respiration and an aggressive display to conspecifics. We found that, under laboratory conditions, abdomen wave was not increased when the oxygen concentration was low or when larvae were in the presence of conspecifics. These results suggest the behavior is not involved in oxygen uptake or in agonistic interactions. The behavior was increased when larvae had food in their guts and was most dramatically increased in the hours preceding a molt. Abdomen wave may function to loosen the exoskeleton prior to molting and/or release of metabolites.

Notizen: Abstract  Larval damselflies resist infestation by parasitic larval mites by exhibiting behaviours such as grooming, crawling, swimming, and striking at host-seeking mites. Larval damselflies are known to increase time spent in these behaviours in the presence of mites but reduce time spent in these behaviours in the presence of fish predators. The presence of both fish and larval mites presents an obvious conflict: a larval damselfly may actively avoid parasitism by mites, thus increasing its risk of predation, or it may reduce its activity when fish are present, thus increasing its risk of parasitism. We analysed the behaviour of larval Ischnura verticalis in an experiment where we crossed presence and absence of fish with presence and absence of larval mites. Presence of mites induced a large increase in activity of larval I. verticalis but fish had no effect and there were no interpretable interactions between effects of mites and fish. Subsequent experiments indicated that larval I. verticalis in the presence of both mites and fish were more likely to be attacked and killed by fish than those exposed only to fish. The high activity level of I. verticalis larvae in the presence of both fish and mites may suggest that costs of parasitism are high, or that under field conditions it is rare for larvae to be in the immediate presence of both fish predators and potentially parasitic mites.

Notizen: A lab-scale nonflowing reactor was built to study chemical vapor deposition reactions. Mass spectrometry is used to follow reaction pathways and to determine instantaneous reaction rates throughout film growth. In each experiment, the kinetic rate dependence on concentration for a wide range of concentrations is observed as reactants convert to products. This method of obtaining kinetic data is efficient in terms of sample loading, gas usage, and time, since over 200 instantaneous rate/composition pairs can be determined from one 30-min deposition. Because the rate is determined from gas-mass balance, rather than film-thickness measurements, an unlimited number of rate studies can be made on one sample. As a test case, the SiH4 reduction of WF6, used to deposit tungsten during integrated-circuit production, was investigated in the 0.64-L nonflowing laboratory reactor. Gas compositions were measured 2 mm from the growing surface, throughout time, with a mass spectrometer equipped with a capillary sampling tube. Tungsten was deposited on the 95°C surface, and SiHF3 was the primary silicon fluoride reaction product for most tested conditions. A multiple-regression analysis of 1,975 instantaneous composition/rate pairs gives orders of 1.22 in silane, 0.27 in hydrogen, and -2.17 in WF6. The ratio of SiF4 to SiHF3 stays low and constant until the gas becomes silane-rich. The evolution of the instantaneous rate over time implies that a minimal level of thermal activation of the reactive gases is necessary for the deposition to be surface-rate-limited. Preliminary heat-transfer models of the wire substrate imply that heat transfer to the gas phase is in the Knudsen regime.

Notizen: This paper introduces a new method (now commonly referred to as the Baker-Strehlow Method) for estimating pressure and impulse generated by vapor cloud explosions. Strehlow's blast curves and concepts from the Multi-Energy method for determination of explosion energy are applied in this technique. New correlations for maximum flame speed based on obstacle density, fuel reactivity, and cloud confinement allow selection of the appropriate blast curve. Application of these correlations removes much of the subjectivity present in existing explosion estimates.

Notizen: The Baker-Strehlow methodology was developed to provide an objective approach to prediction of blast pressures from vapor cloud explosions. The complete methodology was first published in 1994 [1]. Since then, it has evolved through ongoing research and use in VCE hazard analyses, facility siting studies and accident investigations. This article gives a brief overview of a paper on recent developments in the Baker-Strehlow methodology presented at the 31st Loss Prevention Symposium in Houston on March 9-13, 1997. Because the entire paper is too lengthy to be presented here, the following discussions may be lacking in some details. A copy of the complete paper can be obtained from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE).Since the Baker-Strehlow method was first published, it has been used extensively in VCE hazard assessments in refineries and chemical plants. As expected, many practical lessons have been learned during the course of the hazard assessments, and the Baker-Strehlow method has evolved as a result. The changes have been evolutionary, not revolutionary. In keeping with the goals of the original study in which the methodology was developed, all changes have been incorporated with the intent of achieving an objective methodology to provide consistent prediction of VCE blast effects. The revisions to the Baker-Strehlow method resulting from experience gained during plant walk-downs and hazard assessments include: Systematic identification of “potential explosion sites” or “PESs,”Selection of the level of confinement for mixed zones of 2D and 3D confinement,Deciding on flame expansion when confinement is elevated above the vapor cloud,Selecting the reactivity for a fuel that is a mixture of fuels with differing reactivities,Predicting blast loads when there are multiple PES's within a vapor cloud considering different ignition source locations.

Notizen: Lead replacement heat stabilizers have made considerable inroads in areas where water resistance is not significant, primarily in wire jackets and insulations not for wet locations. In areas where short-term moisture resistance is required, such as with flexible cord insulation and electrical tapes, nonlead products are either in use or under development. In those areas where long-term water resistance is needed, as with geomembranes and many wire insulations, despite much experimentation, commercial products are not in use as yet in the United States. The factors involved are discussed.
