    Notes: Ion etching under well-defined conditions represents a very powerful tool to fabricate tips in a controlled and reproducible manner for Scanning Probe Microscopy which possess clean, relatively smooth, and oxide-free surfaces. The possibilities and limitations of ion etching are demonstrated thoroughly for tungsten, which is of particular interest for scanning tunneling microscopy. Iterative computer simulations and experimental studies are provided. The simulation of the etching process at the atomic level is based on the Monte Carlo program (Transport of Ions in Matter), which provides reliable values for the key input parameters such as the sputtering yield Y(θ,Eion) and the mean ion range in the material for ion energies between 1 and 6 keV. The simulation program starts with a large tip radius as a crude form and asymptotically approaches a "final form" of a very sharp tip in the course of ion etching. Our experimental results with argon ions in the energy range up to 6 keV and crude electrochemically etched polycrystalline tungsten wire agreed very reasonably with the simulated results. For example, the minimum tip radius obtained experimentally amounts to approximately 5 nm. This value corresponds closely to the ion range, which obviously sets a limit to the smallest achievable tip radius by the effect of transmission sputtering. By variation of the angle between the ion beam and the macroscopic tip, the tip angle can be controlled in the range between 12° and 35°. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The Mary granite, in the East Athabasca mylonite triangle, northern Saskatchewan, provides an example and a model for the development of non-migmatitic gneissic texture. Gneissic compositional layering developed through the simultaneous evolution of three microdomains corresponding to original plagioclase, orthopyroxene and matrix in the igneous rocks. Plagioclase phenocrysts were progressively deformed and recrystallized, first into core and mantle structures, and ultimately into plagioclase-rich layers or ribbons. Garnet preferentially developed in the outer portions of recrystallized mantles, and, with further deformation, produced garnet-rich sub-layers within the plagioclase-rich gneissic domains. Orthopyroxene was replaced by clinopyroxene and garnet (and hornblende if sufficient water was present), which were, in turn, drawn into layers with new garnet growth along the boundaries. The igneous matrix evolved through a number of transient fabric stages involving S-C fabrics, S-C-C′ fabrics, and ultramylonitic domains. In addition, quartz veins were emplaced and subsequently deformed into quartz-rich gneissic layers. Moderate to highly strained samples display extreme mineralogical (compositional) segregation, yet most domains can be directly related to the original igneous precursors. The Mary granite was emplaced at approximately 900 °C and 1.0 GPa and was metamorphosed at approximately 750 °C and 1.0 GPa. The igneous rocks crystallized in the medium-pressure granulite field (Opx–Pl) but were metamorphosed on cooling into the high-pressure (Grt–Cpx–Pl) granulite field. The compositional segregation resulted from a dynamic, mutually reinforcing interaction between deformation, metamorphic and igneous processes in the deep crust. The production of gneissic texture by processes such as these may be the inevitable result of isobaric cooling of igneous rocks within a tectonically active deep crust.

    Notes: Abstract Electrokinetic forces are emerging as a powerful means to drive microfluidic systems with flow channel cross-sectional dimensions in the tens of micrometers and flow rates in the nanoliter per second range. These systems provide many advantages such as improved analysis speed, improved reproducibility, greatly reduced reagent consumption, and the ability to perform multiple operations in an integrated fashion. Planar microfabrication methods are used to make these analysis chips in materials such as glass or polymers. Many applications of this technology have been demonstrated, such as DNA separations, enzyme assays, immunoassays, and PCR amplification integrated with microfluidic assays. Further development of this technology is expected to yield higher levels of functionality of sample throughput on a single microfluidic analysis chip.

    Notes: A set of data supposed to give possible axioms for spacetimes with a sufficient number of isometries in spectral geometry is given. These data are shown to be sufficient to obtain 1+1 dimensional de Sitter spacetime. The data rely at the moment somewhat on the guidance given by a required symmetry, in part to allow explicit calculations in a specific model. The framework applies also to the noncommutative case.     Notes: Abstract   The Japan Trench forearc offshore Honshu Island in northeast Japan, where the 130-m.y.-old Pacific oceanic plate is presently subducted, was drilled during the Ocean Drilling Program Leg 186. Results from mechanical and sedimentological studies of claystones recovered from Sites 1150 and 1151 in the overlying erosional forearc wedge are reported in the present study. Although many physical properties are similar in the seismic (Site 1150) and aseismic portion (Site 1151) of the shallow forearc, Site 1150 displayed a higher abundance of open fractures, two prominent fault zones and enigmatic pore fluid signatures in the claystones. The abundance of weak mineral phases, together with high smectite contents (from X-ray diffraction), control the low friction coefficients of 0.33–0.39 of the claystones in ring-shear experiments. Results from triaxial testing proposed overall low magnitudes of in situ effective vertical stress, with somewhat lower values at Site 1150 than at Site 1151. Similarly, samples from Site 1150 displayed slightly higher pore fluid pressures than those at Site 1151. The high sediment porosities, which are in part also a result of intact diatom tests (from scanning electron microscope), together with the anomalous fluid signatures and elevated pore fluid pressures, could very likely result from upward migration and influx of deep-seated waters. Dewatering reactions at depth result in enhanced pore fluid pressure transients along out-of-sequence thrusts and consequently lower effective stress. At depths greater than that of Leg 186 drilling, elevated pressure–temperature conditions trigger mineral transformation and cementation, which result in increasing friction, unstable sliding and seismic rupture. Such earthquakes could have repeatedly disaggregated the consolidated claystone fabrics at the seismic site, and could be responsible for differences in yield strength and cementation when compared to the aseismic Site 1151.
