Summary The start of thermal decomposition of living-polystyrene was studied in bulk and in solution by measuring the changes in molecular weight average and molecular weight distribution. The usual kinetic scheme for such a random degradation process cannot be applied to the results received. The order of degradation reaction depends as well on the degree of polymerization as on the degradation temperature. Therefore the probability of chain scission is concluded to result from accumulation of oscillational energy through coupled vibrational states which are not in thermodynamical equilibrium. With that hypothesis, for the first time a possible cleaving of macromolecular bonds is postulated on the basis of oscillation coupling. Hereby it is possible to explain some results and assumptions on the stability behaviour of polymers which so far were difficult to explain.
Notes:
