Notes: Identifies some managerially relevant factors that influence the size of the price premium that consumers will pay for national brands over store brands in grocery products. We define price premium as the maximum price consumers will pay for a national brand over a store brand, expressed as the proportionate price differential between a national brand and a store brand. Overall, perceived quality differential accounts for about 12 percent of the variation in price premiums across consumers and product categories and is the most important variable influencing price premiums.

Notes: Concerns the stances that Indian and UK managers take towards ethical issues at work. This topic is part of the broader cross-cultural research agenda on managerial values. Makes a contribution to the subjects of business ethics and corporate citizenship. The responses of samples of Indian and UK managers to ethical issues were classified, using a research instrument called Redundancy, by eight ethical stances that are defined in a conceptual framework presented. The results are used to clarify issues that arise from the literature about Indian and UK managers' values. The tentative findings are that Indian managers' ethical stances were similar to those of Western managers but that, compared with the UK respondents, they were more likely to experience ethical tension between their personal, espoused, stances and those they took at work. The preference for a pragmatic, ethical puzzle, approach to issues, that was reported by both Indian and UK samples, is seen as a problem in developing good corporate citizenship. Presents an agenda for future research.

Notes: Considerable attention has been focussed on the measurement of service quality. In fact, the 1990s has been referred to as the era of customer service. However, little empirical research has been done to demonstrate the impact of service quality on usage decisions. Product (brand or service) name familiarity is another variable that has been recognized as having a major influence on the choice of products (services). Reports the findings of an experimental study investigating the impact of service quality and name familiarity on the respondents' attitudes and intention to use these services.

Notes: Service industries have been, and will continue to be, largely responsible for much of the domestic and international economic growth in the USA. Service loyalty, which can be obtained by building relationships and providing excellent customer service, is often the key factor that builds competitive advantage for service providers. The main goal article is to provide a conceptual framework for service loyalty, but one that is not based on empirical support. Contends that this framework can assist service providers in determining the type of loyalty conditions that are likely to exist for specific service industries. Offers in addition some guidelines with which to devise appropriate marketing strategies for each service loyalty condition.

Notes: The objective of this paper is to examine the country of origin (COO) research as it applies to services. This stream of research has seemed to focus on products since the 1960s, but has been applied to services in only a very few areas. This dearth of research is surprising as trade in international services has increased greatly in recent years and continues to grow. This study thoroughly examines the related journal articles and attempts to answer the question: "Does COO research apply to services?" Our investigation found three classes of literature focusing on services, and details the studies in each. The study concludes with recommendations for future research.

Notes: The internationalization of service firms is expanding dramatically, fueled by recent technological innovations and reductions of trade barriers. Drawing upon Dunning's eclectic theory, firm- and location-specific factors which have been found to be antecedents of internationalization of manufacturing firms are extended to determine their applicability to the internationalization of service firms. The hypotheses are empirically examined through a survey of 228 business-to-business service firms. Findings indicate that the firm-specific factor of firm size and the location-specific factor of market characteristics influence management attitudes toward operating internationally, which in turn influence the degree of internationalization of service firms. Practical implications, drawn from the results, are offered for managers of service firms who are facing the task of internationalizing.

Notes: A transient, three-dimensional mathematical model of a single-pass laser surface alloying process has been developed to examine the macroscopic heat, momentum and species transport during the process. A numerical study is performed in a co-ordinate system moving with the laser at a constant scanning speed. A fixed grid enthalpy-porosity approach is used, which predicts the evolutionary development of the laser-melted pool. It is observed that the melting of the added alloying element is not instantaneous in case its melting temperature is higher as compared to that of the base metal. As a result, the addition of alloying element at the top surface cannot be accurately modelled as a mass flux boundary condition at that surface. To resolve this situation, the addition of alloying elements is formulated by devising a species generation term for the solute transport equation. By employing a particle-tracking algorithm and a simultaneous particle-melting consideration, the species source term is estimated by the amount of fusion of a spherical particle as it passes through a particular control volume. Numerical simulations are performed for Ni as alloying element on Al base metal. It is revealed that the present model makes a distinctly different prediction of composition variation within the resolidified microstructure, as compared to a model that does not incorporate any considerations of distributed melting.

Notes: One of the most important developments in banking is the increased emphasis on marketing a wide array of financial services. This emphasis has led to the adoption of the product management system in one form or another by many large, full-service commercial banks. The transition to a product management system has required banks to change how they organize and manage their operations. Examines several of the major challenges and issues faced by product managers in the banking environment, namely, the identification of the product managers' task responsibilities; the role of organizational support in facilitating product management; the influence of organizational culture; and the impact of power and conflict on product managers and the product management system. Also examines how product managers assess their job performance, work satisfaction, and the performance of the overall product management system in their bank. Develops directions for future research as well as several managerial recommendations to improve product management performance in banking.
