    Notes: A new technique known as thermally-assisted fast atom bombardment (TA-FAB) has been applied to the analysis of a series of cyclic tetrapeptide mycotoxins in order to demonstrate the usefulness of the method for structural elucidation. TA-FAB uses saturated aqueous solutions of highly hydroxylated compounds, such as fructose, as alternatives to the usual viscous liquid matrices employed in conventional FAB. During the TA-FAB analysis, the probe tip is resistively heated causing diffeiences to occur in the desorption profiles for the analyte and the matrix ions enabling an optimization for analyte desorption as a function of temperature. In this study, direct comparisons are made between TA-FAB, conventional FAB, and electron impact ionization for the analysis of the Helminthosporium carbonum mycotoxins at the 1.5 μg level. The results demonstrate the superior capacity of TA-FAB to provide both molecular weight confirmation and significant fragmentation to aid in the structural elucidation of these important biomolecules.

    Notes: By using gas chromatographic intermediate surface testing to study the surface properties of fused silica capillary tubing, the reversible adsorption of aldehydes and ketones on the fused silica surface has been observed for the first time. It is shown that this interaction can arise from the preferential interaction of carbonyl functional groups at bonded silanol sites on the surface. It is further shown that simple test mixtures containing aldehydes or ketones can be used to probe the concentration of water and bonded silanols on the surface and thus to evaluate capillary manufacturing processes and thermal and chemical surface treatments.

    Notes: A method has been developed for fabricating fused silica capillary columns which have specific surface properties but still retain the excellent strength, flexibility, and resilience of pure fused silica. By using the Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition process (MCVD), typically used for the production of optical fiber lightguides, inorganic dopants such as Al, Nd, Ge, and P can be introduced into the preform-tube by MCVD. Doped columns have a wide range of specific surface properties, and columns with undoped fused silica prepared by MCVD are more chemically inert and less acidic than columns prepared by conventional methods. This paper describes the method for fabricating capillaries and the initial studies to characterize them.

    Notes: We report the development of a capillary gas chromatographic method, superior to existing packed column methods, for the analysis of highly brominated additive fire-retardants, including decabromodiphenyl ether (1) and decabromodiphenoxyethane (II). Neither compound has been analyzed previously by capillary GC, and there are no published methods for (II). For (I), the new method is 5-10 times faster than an analogous packed column method, and it has 100 times lower detection limits and twice the precision of a gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric method. For (II), the capillary method is 30-50% faster than an unpublished liquid chromatographic method. The greater efficiency of the capillary method makes possible the complete resolution (R ≥ 1.25) of structurally very similar compounds (e.g. compound (II) and its Br9Cl1 and Br8Cl2 analogues). With the new method, commercial preparations of (I) and (II) can be rapidly analyzed, and samples from combustion and pyrolysis experiments can be evaluated for compositional changes.

    Notes: The collisional activation (xenon) decomposition of actinomycin V, dactinomycin, 7-nitrodactinomycin, 7-aminodactinomycin, and a mixture of dactinomycin, actinomycin C1 and actinomycin C2 was studied using a triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer with fast atom bombardment (xenon) ionization. Fragmentation pathways of the structurally significant ions were rationalized by assuming an initial McLafferty rearrangement at the ester linkage between the methylvaline and the threonine of both rings to form linear pentapeptides, followed by fragmentation in either pentapeptide yielding typical sequence ions and sequence cleavages from both rings.

    Notes: A new approach to problems associated with enhancement effects in XRF analysis, and by analogy to analysis by electron microprobe and PIXE, is discussed. The concept of enhancement as ‘relative excess absorption’ is introduced. This concept allows an arrangement of mass balances in which the concentration of any given element may be derived explicitly from a set of relationships equivalent to fundamental expressions, such as the Lachance-Traill and Tertian equations for monochromatically excited XRF and the Claisse-Quintin equations for polychromatic excitation. In this new approach the values of μk′(λi or Ei) may be derived, and carry the meaning of apparent mass absorption coefficients for absorption and enhancement effects characteristic of any given pair of elements. Finally, some obvious convergences between XRF, electron microprobe and PIXE analyses are emphasized.
