Description / Table of Contents: In this book, the functional inequalities are introduced to describe: (i) the spectrum of the generator: the essential and discrete spectrums, high order eigenvalues, the principle eigenvalue, and the spectral gap; (ii) the semigroup properties: the uniform intergrability, the compactness, the convergence rate, and the existence of density; (iii) the reference measure and the intrinsic metric: the concentration, the isoperimetic inequality, and the transportation cost inequality.

Notes: An improved theoretical long-range dispersion plus induction dipole moment surface for N2-Ar is presented, and detailed numerical simulations are used to test its predictions against experimental far-IR and mid-IR spectra using two previously-reported potential energy surfaces. As was found in earlier work on the mid-IR spectrum using a pure induction dipole surface, the MMSVmod potential of Jäger et al. [J. Chem. Soc. Faraday Discuss. 97, 105 (1994)] yields distinctly better agreement with both experiments than does the XC-3 potential of Dham et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 103, 8477 (1995)]. However, the new dipole surface yields slightly poorer agreement with certain features of the experimental mid-IR and far-IR spectra, which suggests that the existing theoretical values and derivatives with respect to the bond length of some of the permanent moment and (hyper)polarizability properties of N2 need improvement. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The problem of the binding of an excess electron to polar molecules and their clusters has long fascinated researchers. Although excess electrons bound to such species tend to be very extended spatially and to have little spatial overlap with the valence electrons of the neutral molecules, inclusion of electron correlation effects is essential for quantitatively describing the electron binding. The major electron correlation contribution may be viewed as a dispersion interaction between the excess electron and the electrons of the molecule or cluster. Recent work using a one-electron Drude model to describe excess electrons interacting with polar molecules is reviewed.

Notes: Case-based reasoning (CBR), which has long been considered a branch of artificial intelligence, has recently gained great attention in the knowledge management circle because of its capability for storing and retrieving experience-based knowledge by emulating human memory, and its ability to function similar to organizational memory to preserve organizational knowledge. While many successful CBR systems have been developed as knowledge repositories for preserving intellectual capital and for problem solving in business communities, both the concept and methodology of CBR are still novelties in education communities. While there are a plethora of projects and practical pursuits for CBR applications in business, literature relating to designing, developing and evaluating practical CBR educational applications is conspicuously scant. Based on the issues encountered and lessons learned in a CBR system development project, this paper attempts to provide some pragmatic guidelines for those who are interested in applying the CBR knowledge repository approach to supporting knowledge creation and diffusion in the education domain.

Notes: [Auszug] Isoniazid is one of the most effective antituberculosis drugs, yet its precise mechanism of action is still controversial. Using specialized linkage transduction, a single point mutation allele (S94A) within the putative target gene inhA was transferred in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The inhA(S94A) ...

Notes: [Auszug] Telomeres were originally defined as chromosome caps that prevent the natural ends of linear chromosomes from undergoing deleterious degradation and fusion events. POT1 (protection of telomeres) protein binds the single-stranded G-rich DNA overhangs at human chromosome ends and suppresses unwanted ...

Notes: The dependence of strength on notch radii of ceramic components is presented. Thestrength is exponential decay as the notch radius decrease, the smooth specimen that corresponds tothe infinity notch radius topped the fracture strength, but the lowest value relys on the micro featureof the materials. Plotted the strengths on Weibull and Normal probability paper, the fitnesscoefficients reveal that the strength of smooth specimen, as the past literatures indicated, followsWeibull distribution, but the strength of notched specimen follows Normal distribution better. Suchresult is due to the fact that the decreasing notch radius reduces and limits the effective originalfracture volume, when the notch becomes a slim crack, the weakest link place becomesdeterministic

Notes: Casing drilling technique which has been dramatically developing is a revolution inpetroleum industry and has aroused great concerns. The fatigue failure of casing thread connection isa critical issue for using. Therefore, to study the fatigue failure of casing connection is an importantissue for understand the life of casing drilling. For the notched element, how to estimate the life andwhich parameter (equivalent stress, equivalent strain ,or the strain in the root )represent the damageunder fatigue condition is still a problem. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the fatigue life ofnotch element under multiaxial stresses and to find out the damage parameter so as to predict the lifeof notch element. First specimen were machined with the same notch geometer dimension as thecasing thread connection, fatigue tests with tension and torsion loading were carried out by fatiguetest machine , for stress levels designed to obtain S-N lifetime curve. The stress and strain for theconnections subjected to proportional loading were analyzed by elastic-plastic finite element method. The stress-strain state for notched specimens subjected to constant amplitude proportional multiaxialloadings was also calculated and analyzed by the finite element model. Take the equivalent stress, equivalent strain and the strain by FEM in the root into the prediction model, the strain by FEM has agood agreement with the experiment. But the results from the equivalent stress and equivalent strainalso in good agreement with the experiment and is thought to be a simple prediction way
