    Description: Dietary fiber (DF) is an intrinsic component in plant feedstuffs that has been associated with physiological, structural, and functional changes in the gastrointestinal tract. DF is composed of non-starch polysaccharides (NSP), oligosaccharides, and lignin that scape digestion and enzymatic hydrolysis. In general terms, fiber can be classified as insoluble or soluble based on their solubility in water. Both fiber types have direct nutritional implications in broiler diets. Inclusion of insoluble DF in broiler diets modulates intestinal morphology, digestive organ development, nutrient absorption, growth performance, and intestinal microbiota. Soluble DF is thought to increase intestinal viscosity and is associated with negative changes in intestinal microflora and reduction in nutrient absorption. Nevertheless, there is a group of soluble fibers, integrated by oligosaccharides, that function as prebiotics positively modulating intestinal microbiota. Due to the changes in chemical structure and subsequent variation in functionality, it is a difficult task to assign clear attributes to DF as a whole. Therefore, the following review paper compiles data from research conducted using DF and tries to unify such information into practical decisions to be considered when using DF as a functional nutrient in poultry nutrition.

    Description: The PERCIVAL detector is a CMOS imager designed for the soft X‐ray regime at photon sources. Although still in its final development phase, it has recently seen its first user experiments: ptychography at a free‐electron laser, holographic imaging at a storage ring and preliminary tests on X‐ray photon correlation spectroscopy. The detector performed remarkably well in terms of spatial resolution achievable in the sample plane, owing to its small pixel size, large active area and very large dynamic range; but also in terms of its frame rate, which is significantly faster than traditional CCDs. In particular, it is the combination of these features which makes PERCIVAL an attractive option for soft X‐ray science.

    Description: We present key observations and analyses of the first and second stimulations conducted at the Pohang enhanced geothermal system (EGS) site in Korea in 2016. The first hydraulic stimulation was conducted in the PX-2 well of 4.3 km depth, with the maximum wellhead pressure of 89.2 MPa, the maximum injection rate of 46.8 L/s, and a total injected volume of 1970 m3. The first stimulation showed non-linear and reversible fracture-opening behavior with injection pressure increase. The stimulation mechanism of PX-2 is interpreted as a combination of tensile fracture extension and hydraulic jacking. The second hydraulic stimulation was conducted in the PX-1 well of 4.2 km depth, with the maximum wellhead pressure of 27.7 MPa, the maximum injection rate of 18.0 L/s, and a total injected volume of 3907 m3. The fracture-opening pressure of PX-1 was evaluated from the clear pressure peaks and the pressure at differential injectivity increase, and was drastically lower than that of PX-2. The transmissivity of PX-1 permanently increased by 6.4 times during the second stimulation. The wellhead injectivity of PX-1 was 3.6 times as high as that of PX-2 at the same injection rate. The stimulation mechanism in PX-1 is interpreted as a combination of hydraulic shearing and hydraulic jacking of unmated or shear-dilated fracture. Both stimulations in the two wells showed consistently greater seismicity rate and magnitude during the shut-in phases than during the preceding injection phases. A close correlation between the injected fluid volume and seismic magnitude was observed in both wells, and the seismic events induced by the two stimulations were in general below the maximum magnitude envelopes expected by the previous studies. Despite the close distance of approximately 600 m in the same rock formation, the two wells showed distinctly different behavior in terms of the overall pressure ranges, pressure peaks, pressure for injectivity increases, transmissivity changes, and the stimulation mechanisms due possibly to the heavy mud and lost circulation material used during the drilling and completion of PX-2. The contrasting hydromechanical responses observed in the same reservoir at the two nearby wells emphasize the importance of proper drilling and completion with close consideration of stimulation strategy.

    Description: We present measurements of the branching fractions for the decays B → Kμ+μ− and B → Ke+e−, and their ratio (RK), using a data sample of 711 fb−1 that contains 772 × 106$$ Boverline{B} $$ B B ¯ events. The data were collected at the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e− collider. The ratio RK is measured in five bins of dilepton invariant-mass-squared (q2): q2 ∈ (0.1, 4.0), (4.00, 8.12), (1.0, 6.0), (10.2, 12.8) and (〉 14.18) GeV2/c4, along with the whole q2 region. The RK value for q2 ∈ (1.0, 6.0) GeV2/c4 is $$ {1.03}_{-0.24}^{+0.28} $$ 1.03 − 0.24 + 0.28 ± 0.01. The first and second uncertainties listed are statistical and systematic, respectively. All results for RK are consistent with Standard Model predictions. We also measure CP-averaged isospin asymmetries in the same q2 bins. The results are consistent with a null asymmetry, with the largest difference of 2.6 standard deviations occurring for the q2 ∈ (1.0, 6.0) GeV2/c4 bin in the mode with muon final states. The measured differential branching fractions, $$ dmathrm{mathcal{B}} $$ d ℬ /dq2, are consistent with theoretical predictions for charged B decays, while the corresponding values are below the expectations for neutral B decays. We have also searched for lepton-flavor-violating B → Kμ±e∓ decays and set 90% confidence-level upper limits on the branching fraction in the range of 10−8 for B+ → K+μ±e∓, and B0 → K0μ±e∓ modes.

    Description: Rapid assessment of the volume and the rate at which gas and pyroclasts are injected into the atmosphere during volcanic explosions is key to effective eruption hazard mitigation. Here, we use data from a dense infrasound network deployed in 2017 on Mt. Etna, Italy, to estimate eruptive volume flow rates (VFRs) during small gas-and-ash explosions. We use a finite-difference time-domain approximation to compute the acoustic Green's functions and perform a full waveform inversion for a multipole source, combining monopole and horizontal dipole terms. The inversion produces realistic estimates of VFR, on the order of 4 × 104 m3/s and well-defined patterns of source directivity. This is the first application of acoustic waveform inversion at Mt. Etna. Our results demonstrate that acoustic waveform inversion is a mature and robust tool for assessment of source parameters and holds potential as a tool to provide rapid estimates of VFR in near real time.
