Description: This is the Kendal, Lancaster and Preston canal fishery produced by Lancashire River Authority in 1970. The Kendal-Lancaster-Preston canal commenced at Stainton in Westmorland and terminated on the outskirts of Preston. Fishing in the canal with rod and line was controlled by the Northern Anglers’ Association. In the early 60’s anglers, had complained about, the extremely low numbers of fish that had been caught in the canal and various opinions had been expressed concerning the alleged shortages o f fish. Since 1967, in an endeavour to meet the fish re-stocking demands of the Association, 50,000 freshwater fish of different species had been introduced by the Lancashire River Authority, but catches had not increased. In 1969 was agreed by the Northern Anglers’ Association to carry out a study of the fish populations throughout the whole length of the canal and the chemical quality of the water analysed. This report is not produced as a scientific dissertation, but rather as a means of imparting to members of the Northern Anglers’ Association the fish potential available to them in their endeavours to catch fish.

Description: The temperature of water in a river system affects fish in various ways; it has an influence on feeding habits, movement and metabolism. All fish vary in their ability to tolerate fluctuations in temperature, but those that live in a reasonably stable environment are more sensitive to major changes (tropical fish) than are salmon which can tolerate abrupt changes. The body temperature of the majority of fish differs from that of the surrounding water by only 0.5 to 1.0degrees, and changes in temperature can, in many cases, be a signalling factor for some process, for example spawning, migration or feeding. It has been found, after monitoring the activity in 2,623 salmon in the River Lune, that they live in a water temperature of 0-17 degrees. Whilst salmon ova can develop in a temperature range of 0-12 degrees, spawning takes place within a much closer range, and these tolerances will be found in the Report. This report offers data and analysis of fish movement correlated to water temperature for the years 1964/65.

Description: The problem of the Lancashire River Authority is one of deciding the river flow which will meet the requirements of the water engineer in his endeavour to secure water for the public and industry, demands of fish populations, and the needs of anglers. This report analyses salmon catch data from anglers in the River Lune (north west England) and relates it to flow range. The years 1956-1967 are covered.

Description: This report covers the upstream movement of 1,719 salmon in the River Leven during the year 1965. An analysis of river levels taken at hourly intervals from April to November 1965 correlated to fish movement at the exact river level when fish moved is provided. The report concludes that major quantities of water from the Rivers Lune and Leven can be made available for domestic and industrial supply without harming the fisheries.

Description: This report looks at the upstream movement in the River Lune of 9704 salmon which were monitored in the years 1960-1966. It explores the Broadraine Weir near Kirby Lonsdale with its fish monitoring station, the visual counting and trapping salmon, electronic monitoring of fish, and analysis of river flows.

Description: Over a number of years complaints have been made by various angling associations within the area of the Lancashire and Mersey and Weaver River Authorities about the unsatisfactory state of the fisheries in the Leeds/Liverpool Canal. Following upon discussions with the associations the Lancashire River Authority agreed to carry out an investigation into the fish species and their populations. The survey has extended over two years and it is hoped that the following information will be of value to all concerned. The canal is 127 miles in length when measured from the River Aire at Leeds to the docks at Liverpool. The survey was confined to two sections: i) That part of the canal which passes through the area of the Lancashire River Authority; and ii) 10 miles of that section which runs through the area of the Mersey and Weaver River Authority. The fish were sampled by electro-fishing, a 100 yard section of canal being sampled at each one mile interval. Water samples for chemical analysis were taken immediately prior to the commencement of fishing operations. The analyses were intended to demonstrate the quality of the water in which the fish were living at the time of the survey. Regular samples of the fauna and flora present in the canal were taken and examined in the fisheries laboratory of the Authority.

Description: In order to improve the habitat of the Rivers Ribble and Hodder in the north west of England it is necessary to assess existing fish stocks. To assist the Ribble Fisheries Association a test census of stock has been made on the rivers Hodder and Ribble. The fish have been taken by electro fishing techniques. The following fish were collected over six days in September 1965: dace, chub, grayling, eel, salmon and trout. This short report summarises the findings of the survey.
