    Description: The marine life industry in Florida is defined as the harvest of live marine specimens (fish andinvertebrate species including plants, live rock and sand, and small “critters”) for commercial use,primarily aquariums. This paper summarizes data collected on the industry since 1990, includingtotal landings, revenues, and trends over time. Regional analysis shows where the primary collectingareas are located in Florida. Seasonal analysis shows when the majority of landings occur within theyear. Statistics on the number of participants by type (i.e., collector versus wholesaler) provideinsight into the size of the industry. Trends are evaluated in terms of changes across the 9-yearperiod from 1990 to 1998. In general, the number of licensed collectors has increased substantially,landings of fish and animal invertebrates peaked in 1994, angelfish dominated the fish landings, liverock dominated the invertebrate landings, and the average landings per trip have remained relativelyconstant.     Description: A survey of marine life wholesalers was initiated in 1999 as a first step towards understanding thenature of Florida’s marine life industry, the demand for Florida products, and the need for changes inthe way the industry is regulated. Florida firms deal primarily in marine species and collect much oftheir own product. Wholesalers outside of Florida handle more freshwater species and purchase mostof their inventory, the majority from overseas suppliers. Dealers predict that the average firm sizewill continue to grow as the industry consolidates. Niche markets for eco-friendly product will gainmomentum. In Florida, marketing strategies should point to the high quality of Florida species withemphasis on the growing popularity of invertebrates. Wholesalers should look to provide buyers ofFlorida product with more consistent quantities throughout the year. Resource managers will bechallenged to find ways to protect over-harvested species without interfering with the collection ofabundant species while considering the effect of new regulations. (42pp.)

    Description: The importance of international markets as a source of live, ornamental “fish” supply is growing dueto more stringent wild-harvest regulations in Florida. In addition, foreign markets are increasing inimportance as a source of demand for Florida purveyors of live, ornamental “fish”. Florida plays animportant role in this growing international market. Trends in imports and exports of live,ornamental “fish” are described for two primary data sets: U.S. Customs and U.S. Fish and WildlifeService. These trends are described primarily for the 1994-98 period for Florida and the UnitedStates. Florida imports and exports are described for the two major ports: Miami and Tampa. Themost important trading countries are also described. This information will help Florida purveyors oflive, ornamental “fish” better understand the international markets upon which they have becomemore dependent. (PDF has 18 pages)

    Description: This is the Kendal, Lancaster and Preston canal fishery produced by Lancashire River Authority in 1970. The Kendal-Lancaster-Preston canal commenced at Stainton in Westmorland and terminated on the outskirts of Preston. Fishing in the canal with rod and line was controlled by the Northern Anglers’ Association. In the early 60’s anglers, had complained about, the extremely low numbers of fish that had been caught in the canal and various opinions had been expressed concerning the alleged shortages o f fish. Since 1967, in an endeavour to meet the fish re-stocking demands of the Association, 50,000 freshwater fish of different species had been introduced by the Lancashire River Authority, but catches had not increased. In 1969 was agreed by the Northern Anglers’ Association to carry out a study of the fish populations throughout the whole length of the canal and the chemical quality of the water analysed. This report is not produced as a scientific dissertation, but rather as a means of imparting to members of the Northern Anglers’ Association the fish potential available to them in their endeavours to catch fish.

    Description: The stock of salmon in any river is largely dependent upon the escapement of sufficient fish to ensure that an adequate quantity of ova is deposited and full use is made of all suitable spawning areas. At the present time, no accurate information is available on the numbers of fish entering rivers. Therefore, catch returns provide valuable information on fish stocks.This report summarises the catch returns for salmon in the Lancashire River Authority in the North of England for the years 1960-1964. Rivers included are the Lune, Ribble, Kent, Leven and Duddon.

    Description: A small but valuable live bait shrimp fishery has existed in Biscayne Bay since at least the early 1950s. In recent years there has been increasing pressure from recreational fishing and environmental groups to eliminate this fishery from the Bay because the fishing activity is generally thought to be deleterious to the environment and/or destructive to juvenile game fish.This study was initiated to update the existing knowledge of the bait shrimp fishery in Biscayne Bay and document historical trends in number of participants, fishingmethods, fishing area, seasonality, total catch, catch-per-unit-effort, disposition of the catch, and economics of the industry.     Description: Considerable research in recent years has been invested inthe basic biology, ecology, and fisheries of deep-water crabs,Family Geryonidae. These efforts have been concentrated off thesoutheastern United States and southwest Africa, following earlierwork from the Mid-Atlantic states of the U.S. to the CanadianMaritime Provinces. Species of primary interest have been thegolden crab, Chaceon fenneri, and the red crabs C. maritae and C.auinauedens. Only a fraction of recent data has been published.Yet, the many investigators and sponsoring agencies sought tofoster regional comparisons, to inform the commercial fishingindustry and resource agencies, and tp provide guidance for futureresearch investments.On January 19 and 20, 1989, an invited panel of scientists,fishermen, and Sea Grant Extension faculty met in Tampa, Floridato share their results, conclusions, and latest hypotheses.     Description: All species of fish are able to propagate and maintain their numbers provided that no adverse influence occurs to change the compatible environment, the salmon is no exception. Propagation of fish by artificial means has long been a subject of discussion amongst fishery workers and views have been expressed (both favourable and unfavourable) on the merits of the various methods employed. In an attempt to discover whether artificial propagation was necessary and also to find the best methods of propagation to adopt in the various rivers, a phased programme of investigation into natural spawning efficiency and the results obtained by various methods of artificial propagation was started in the Lancashire River Board area during 1957. The object being to seek information on: (1) The survival of ova from natural spawnings to the eyed and alevin stages. (2) The population density of feeding fry (from natural spawnings) at various intervals of development. (3) The viability of green ova and eyed ova- when planted artificially. (4a) The survival to 0+ parr from implants of eyed ova unfed fry and fed fry. (4b) Populations per unit area of 0+ parr from various planting densities of eyed ova, unfed fry and fed fry. Sampling stations were selected on the Rivers Ribble, Lune and Wyre watersheds for the purpose of marking and examination of natural salmon redds.
