Notes: The dynamics of the UV photochemistry of HBr on LiF(001) has been studied by angle-resolved time-of-flight mass spectrometry in ultra-high vacuum. Single-photon photodissociation of adsorbed HBr at 193 nm resulted in photofragment translational energy distributions that differed from those produced in the gas-phase photolysis. Angular distributions of the fast H-atom photofragments peaked at 55±5° to the surface normal, consistent with a preferentially oriented adsorbate geometry. The angular distribution of atomic H obtained from photodissociation of HBr(ad) using polarized light indicated that a substantial fraction of the H atoms collided with the surface before leaving it. Two types of photoreactions in the adsorbed state were observed. Molecular hydrogen was formed in the photoinitiated abstraction reaction, H+HBr(ad)→H2(g)+Br, and its markedly non-Boltzmann translational energy distribution was found to have less energy than would be consistent with gas-phase experiments (performed elsewhere). Photoproducts from the bimolecular reaction 2HX(ad)→H2+X2, X=Cl, Br were also observed in the present study. This photoreaction, which did not depend on prior photodissociation of HX(ad), is thought to proceed through electronic excitation of an HX dimer in the adsorbed state.

Notes: High-resolution photoemission spectroscopy and thermal desorption were used to study the coverage dependence of the K 3p3/2,1/2 core levels of K overlayers on Ru(001). Three doublets were observed to evolve sequentially and to shift to higher binding energy with increasing coverage of potassium. The doublets were assigned to photoemission from the interface (first layer), "bulk'' (second layer), and surface (third layer). Spin–orbit splitting was observed for the first time in the condensed potassium phase by photoemission. The results are discussed in terms of the equivalent core approximation using a Born–Haber cycle. In the thermal desorption data three coverage regimes can be distinguished: a first layer desorbing with first-order kinetics and a strongly decreasing heat of adsorption (EA =2.80–0.87 eV); a second layer with zero-order desorption kinetics and EA =0.78 eV; a third layer and multilayers with the same kinetic order but with EA increasing from 0.78 to 0.93 eV, which is close to the heat of sublimation of potassium.

Notes: Based on the dynamic bond percolation model, we try to regenerate the non-Arrhenius temperature dependence for the ionic conductivity of the polyethylene oxide type polymer electrolytes by considering continuous, correlated motions of the host polymer matrix. To simulate the chain movements, periodic rotations of bond groups of several sizes were introduced into a two-dimensional square lattice. Although the Arrhenius temperature dependence of the rotation frequencies were assumed such that the rotation periods ∝ exp(E/kT), where E increases with the bond group size, the resulting logarithmic diffusivity plotted against reciprocal temperature produces a convex curvature—the typical feature observed by the experiments.

Notes: The contact metamorphosed metapelitic and metapsammitic rocks surrounding the Stawell granite, western Victoria, Australia, are divided into three zones: the low-grade zone, the medium-grade zone and the high-grade zone. Detailed petrological study shows consistency of element distributions, implying that equilibrium was widely attained in the rocks, although equilibrium volumes are generally small (millimetre scale) and considerable mineral chemical variations exist between adjacent domains. The metamorphic mineral assemblages are generally of high variance (KFMASH variance ≤ 2). Consequently, the chemical evolution of assemblages is controlled largely by bulk composition and metamorphic temperature, the former factor being more important in most rocks. The chemographic relations of mineral assemblages in low- and medium- to high-grade zones are presented in compatibility diagrams projected from biotite, quartz and H2O, and biotite, K-feldspar and H2O, respectively. These compatibility diagrams have the advantage of showing both quartz-bearing and quartz-absent assemblages. The metamorphic reactions are modelled successfully by a calculated petrogenetic grid that combines both KFASH and KMASH equilibria. Based on petrographic observations and with constraints from the calculated petrogenetic grid, the following KFMASH reactions, in the order of increasing metamorphic grade, are responsible for producing the various mineral assemblages in the Stawell rocks:chl + mu + q = bi + cd + V,chl + q + cd = g + V,mu + bi + q = ksp + cd + V,mu + q = ksp + and + cd + V (or KASH mu + q = ksp + and + V),mu + cd = ksp + and + bi + V,mu + bi + and = ksp + sp + V,and + bi = ksp + sp + cd + V,mu + bi = ksp + cor + sp + V,mu = ksp + cor + and + sp + V (or KASH mu = ksp + cor + V),bi + cd + q = g + ksp + V.The combined KFASH and KMASH grid provides constraints on reaction coefficients in the above sequence of reactions and on temperature and pressure of metamorphism.

Notes: A wideband integrated optic heterodyning device that utilizes simultaneously a wideband acousto-optic (AO) Bragg cell and a wide-angle electro-optic (EO) Bragg grating lens has been realized, for the first time, in a Y-cut LiNbO3 waveguide 1×8×20 mm3 in size. The device has demonstrated a bandwidth of 240 MHz centered at 350 MHz and a single-tone instantaneous and two-tone third-order spurious-free dynamic ranges of 44.6 and 36.0 dB, respectively, at the optical wavelength of 0.6328 μm. The device suggests a new and simple architecture for wideband integrated optic interferometric rf spectrum analyzers.

Notes: A novel beam chopper with two-harmonics ( f and kf ) sweeping voltages is described. It is shown that beam utilization efficiency and the beam quality of the harmonic chopper are much better than that of the conventional sine-wave chopper. The beam utilization efficiency might be even higher than the square-wave chopper for low-velocity ions. In practice, a chopper with 1.5 and 13.5 MHz (k=9) was constructed with great convenience for the beam-pulsing system of a 4.5-MV Van de Graaff in Peking University. The bench tests indicated that the beam efficiency of the harmonic chopper was higher than a single-frequency chopper by about 47%, which agrees with the theory and the design.

Notes: Although green-light-emitting devices based on poly(p-phenylene vinylene) ppv, have been made and reported by several researchers, it is also of interest to design light emitting devices which emit light in various parts of the visible spectrum, particularly in the blue region. In this letter the effect of doping and conversion time on the photoluminescence (PL) of pvv are investigated. It is observed that treating ppv films with sulfuric acid shifts the PL peaks to the blue region, and Li doping red-shifts the spectra. Unconverted and partially converted ppv films, on the other hand, show PL peaks at about 470 to 480 nm in the dark blue range. The shift in PL peak from green to blue is expected to be due to the decrease in conjugation length which determines the size of the band gap. © 1994 American Institue of Physics.
