    Description: Since 2012 August, the Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD) on the Curiosity rover has been characterizing the Martian surface radiation field which is essential in preparation for future crewed Mars missions. RAD observed radiation dose is influenced by variable topographical features as the rover traverses through the terrain. In particular, while Curiosity was parked near a butte in the Murray Buttes area, we find a decrease of the dose rate by (5 ± 1)% as 19% of the sky was obstructed, versus 10% in an average reference period. Combining a zenith‐angle‐dependent radiation model and the rover panoramic visibility map leads to a predicted reduction of the downward dose by ∼12% due to the obstruction, larger than the observed decrease. With the hypothesis that this difference is attributable to albedo radiation coming from the butte, we estimate the (flat‐terrain) albedo radiation to be about 19% of the total surface dose.

Mars lacks a global magnetic field and its atmosphere is very thin compared to Earth's. Thus its surface is exposed to such space radiation which presents risks to future humans on Mars. Mitigation strategies could include using natural geological structures on Mars, for example, cave skylights and lava tubes and even simple buttes, for protection.     Description: The architecture of High Rate (600 Mega-bits per second) Digital Demodulator (HRDD) ASIC capable of demodulating BPSK and QPSK modulated data is presented in this paper. The advantages of all-digital processing include increased flexibility and reliability with reduced reproduction costs. Conventional serial digital processing would require high processing rates necessitating a hardware implementation in other than CMOS technology such as Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) which has high cost and power requirements. It is more desirable to use CMOS technology with its lower power requirements and higher gate density. However, digital demodulation of high data rates in CMOS requires parallel algorithms to process the sampled data at a rate lower than the data rate. The parallel processing algorithms described here were developed jointly by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). The resulting all-digital receiver has the capability to demodulate BPSK, QPSK, OQPSK, and DQPSK at data rates in excess of 300 Mega-bits per second (Mbps) per channel. This paper will provide an overview of the parallel architecture and features of the HRDR ASIC. In addition, this paper will provide an over-view of the implementation of the hardware architectures used to create flexibility over conventional high rate analog or hybrid receivers. This flexibility includes a wide range of data rates, modulation schemes, and operating environments. In conclusion it will be shown how this high rate digital demodulator can be used with an off-the-shelf A/D and a flexible analog front end, both of which are numerically computer controlled, to produce a very flexible, low cost high rate digital receiver.

    Description: Landslide is one of the dangerous types of natural hazards. This phenomenon causes damages in many countries every year. A detailed landslide hazard assessment is necessary to reduce these damages. This research aims to map the landslide susceptibility zoning (LSZ) using the fuzzy logic method and GIS in the Sorkhab basin as a part of the Zagros fold and thrust belt (FTB), northwestern Iran. All slide types were recorded in fieldwork as landslide inventory. Based on the results, four types, i.e., debris slide, earth slide, and rock fall and complex of landslides, was identified in the region. Then, the effect of each landslide contributing factor including topographical elevation heights, slope classes, aspect classes, geological units, proximity to faults, land covers, rainfall classes, and proximity to streams was constructed in GIS and subsequently normalized using fuzzy membership functions. Finally, by combining all standardized layers using the fuzzy gamma operator, a final map of LSZ was produced. The results showed that a 0.9 fuzzy gamma operator has a high accuracy for the LSZ map in the study area. Besides, the accuracy of the LSZ map revealed a strong relationship (R2) between susceptibility classes, and landslide inventory was calculated using a scatter plot equal to 0.79. Hence, the method represented an appropriate accuracy in predicting the landslide susceptibility in the study area.

    Description: Thirteen adult individuals of a small octopus species of the Octopus aegina complex, 7 males and 6 females, were caught by trawl on bottoms ranging from 60 to 70 m of depth off the southern coast of Turkey, close to Mersin. This species (which is similar to O. kagoshimensis) was never before recorded in the Mediterranean. Further to the West on the southern Turkish coast (Gulf of Bodrum), a single individual of a pelagic squid of the genus Octopoteuthis was captured. The tentative identification as O. megaptera is based on the body shape and the presence and position of two caudal mantle photophores; this is the first record of this species in the Mediterranean. These observations are discussed with regard to questions of species identification and possible recent species range extensions due to immigration from the Atlantic, or from the Red Sea (Lessepsian migration).
