    Abstract: This book describes green photocatalysts and their diverse applications in the fields of environmental sciences and energy.     Description: On 12 August 2021, a 〉220 s lasting complex earthquake with M〈sub〉w〈/sub〉 〉 8.2 hit the South Sandwich Trench. Due to its remote location and short interevent times, reported earthquake parameters varied significantly between different international agencies. We studied the complex rupture by combining different seismic source characterization techniques sensitive to different frequency ranges based on teleseismic broadband recordings from 0.001 to 2 Hz, including point and finite fault inversions and the back‐projection of high‐frequency signals. We also determined moment tensor solutions for 88 aftershocks. The rupture initiated simultaneously with a rupture equivalent to a M〈sub〉w〈/sub〉 7.6 thrust earthquake in the deep part of the seismogenic zone in the central subduction interface and a shallow megathrust rupture, which propagated unilaterally to the south with a very slow rupture velocity of 1.2 km/s and varying strike following the curvature of the trench. The slow rupture covered nearly two‐thirds of the entire subduction zone length, and with M〈sub〉w〈/sub〉 8.2 released the bulk of the total moment of the whole earthquake. Tsunami modeling indicates the inferred shallow rupture can explain the tsunami records. The southern segment of the shallow rupture overlaps with another activation of the deeper part of the megathrust equivalent to M〈sub〉w〈/sub〉 7.6. The aftershock distribution confirms the extent and curvature of the rupture. Some mechanisms are consistent with the mainshocks, but many indicate also activation of secondary faults. Rupture velocities and radiated frequencies varied strongly between different stages of the rupture, which might explain the variability of published source parameters.
    Description: Plain Language Summary: The earthquake of 12 August 2021 along the deep‐sea trench of the South Sandwich Islands in the South Atlantic reached a magnitude of 8.2 and triggered a tsunami. The automatic earthquake parameter determination of different agencies showed very different results shortly after the earthquake and partially underestimated the tsunami potential of the earthquake. A possible reason was the complex rupture process and that the tsunami was generated by a long and shallow slow slip rupture sandwiched between more conventional fast slip subevents at its northern and southern ends. In addition, the fault surface, which extended over 450 km, was highly curved striking 150°–220°. We investigated the different components of the seismic wavefields in different frequency ranges and with different methods. The analysis shows how even complex earthquakes can be deciphered by combining analyzing methods. The comparison with aftershocks and the triggered tsunami waves confirms our model that explains the South Sandwich rupture by four subevents in the plate boundary along the curved deep‐sea trench. Here, the depth, rupture velocities, and slip on each segment of the rupture vary considerably. The method can also be applied to other megathrust earthquakes and help to further improve tsunami warnings in the future.

    Description: Electric direct-current (DC) drives based on DC motor are extremely important in the manufacturing process, so it must be crucial to increase their performance when they are working on load disturbances or the DC motor’s parameters change. Usually, several load torque suddenly appears when electric drives are operating in a speed closed-loop, so robust controllers are required to keep the speed high-performance. One of the most well-known robust strategies is the sliding mode controller (SMC), which works under discontinue operation. This controller can handle disturbances and variations in the plant’s parameters, so the controller has robust performance. Nevertheless, it has some disadvantages (chattering). Therefore, this paper proposed a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) that includes an artificial organic network for adjusting the command signal of the SMC. The proposed controller gives a smooth signal that decrements the chattering in the SMC. The stability condition that is based on Lyapunov of the DC motor is driven is evaluated; besides, the stability margins are calculated. The proposed controller is designed using co-simulation and a real testbed since co-simulation is an extremely useful tool in academia and industry allows to move from co-simulation to real implementation in short period of time. Moreover, there are several universities and industries that adopt co-simulation as the main step to design prototypes. Thus, engineering students and designers are able to achieve excellent results when they design rapid and functional prototypes. For instance, co-simulation based on Multisim leads to design directly printed circuit boards so engineering students or designers could swiftly get an experimental DC drive. The experimental results using this platform show excellent DC-drive performance when the load torque disturbances are suddenly applied to the system. As a result, the proposed controller based on fuzzy artificial organic and SMC allows for adjusting the command signal that improves the dynamic response in DC drives. The experimental response using the sliding-mode controller with fuzzy artificial organic networks is compared against an auto-tuning, Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID), which is a conventional controller. The PID controller is the most implemented controller in several industries, so this proposal can contribute to improving manufacturing applications, such as micro-computer numerical control (CNC) machines. Moreover, the proposed robust controller achieves a superior-speed response under the whole tested scenarios. Finally, the presented design methodology based on co-simulation could be used by universities and industry for validating and implementing advanced control systems in DC drives.

    Description: The Retinoblastoma protein (pRb) is a key cell cycle regulator conserved in a wide variety of organisms. Experimental analysis of pRb’s functions in animals and plants has revealed that this protein participates in cell proliferation and differentiation processes. In addition, pRb in animals and its orthologs in plants (RBR), are part of highly conserved protein complexes which suggest the possibility that analogies exist not only between functions carried out by pRb orthologs themselves, but also in the structure and roles of the protein networks where these proteins are involved. Here, we present examples of pRb/RBR participation in cell cycle control, cell differentiation, and in the regulation of epigenetic changes and chromatin remodeling machinery, highlighting the similarities that exist between the composition of such networks in plants and animals.

    Description: An index of the release of open government data, published in 2016 by the Open Knowledge Foundation, shows that there is significant variability in the country’s supply of this public good. What explains these cross-country differences? Adopting an interdisciplinary approach based on data science and economic theory, we developed the following research workflow. First, we gather, clean, and merge different datasets released by institutions such as the Open Knowledge Foundation, World Bank, United Nations, World Economic Forum, Transparency International, Economist Intelligence Unit, and International Telecommunication Union. Then, we conduct feature extraction and variable selection founded on economic domain knowledge. Next, we perform several linear regression models, testing whether cross-country differences in the supply of open government data can be explained by differences in the country’s economic, social, and institutional structures. Our analysis provides evidence that the country’s civil liberties, government transparency, quality of democracy, efficiency of government intervention, economies of scale in the provision of public goods, and the size of the economy are statistically significant to explain the cross-country differences in the supply of open government data. Our analysis also suggests that political participation, sociodemographic characteristics, and demographic and global income distribution dummies do not help to explain the country’s supply of open government data. In summary, we show that cross-country differences in governance, social institutions, and the size of the economy can explain the global distribution of open government data.

    Description: This paper focuses on the main reasons of low efficiency in a current-fed DC-DC resonant converter applied to photovoltaic (PV) isolated systems, comparing the effects derived by the overlapping time in the gate-signals (gate-source voltage) combining silicon (Si), silicon carbide (SiC), and gallium nitride (GaN)-based power devices. The results show that unidirectional switches (metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) plus diode) present hard switching as a result of the diode preventing the MOSFET capacitance of being discharged. The effectiveness of the converter was verified with a 200-W prototype with an input voltage range of 0–30.3 V, an output voltage of 200 V, and a switching frequency of 200 kHz. The reduction losses by applying GaN versus Si and SiC technologies are 66.49% and 53.57%, respectively. Alternatively, by applying SiC versus Si devices the reduction loss is 27.84%. Finally, according to the results, 60% of losses were caused by the diodes on both switches.

    Description: We develop a model with optimal shares of intergovernmental transfers, and we apply a simulation analysis of our model for the case of Mexico. The main outcomes of this paper are as follows: First, we provide optimal shares of intergovernmental funds to be allocated in each state considering the regional distribution of the benefits of local public spending in Mexico. Second, our analysis shows that the regional heterogeneity of preferences across regions should be an important determinant of federal funds allocated to state governments. Third, the current system of finance relies on a tax revenue sharing accord that emphasizes nationwide tax collection issues as the main determinants of intergovernmental transfers and local spending. Our analysis provides a contrast between how fiscal policy is conducted, and feasible choices of policy reform. Fourth, our analysis of simulation identifies winners and losers from policy reform, and so our analysis contributes to a better understanding of the advantages and shortcomings of the current policy of intergovernmental transfers, providing feasible ways to improve the outcomes of subnational government spending.
