    Description: Studies on the long-term degradation of organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) based on tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (AlQ3), the most widely used electroluminescent molecule, reveal that injection of holes in AlQ3 is the main cause of device degradation. The transport of holes into AlQ3 caused a decrease in its fluorescence quantum efficiency, thus showing that cationic AlQ3 species are unstable and that their degradation products are fluorescence quenchers.     Description: DNA-(cytosine-5) methyltransferase (MCMT) methylates newly replicated mammalian DNA, but the factors regulating this activity are unknown. Here, MCMT is shown to bind proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), an auxiliary factor for DNA replication and repair. Binding of PCNA requires amino acids 163 to 174 of MCMT, occurs in intact cells at foci of newly replicated DNA, and does not alter MCMT activity. A peptide derived from the cell cycle regulator p21(WAF1) can disrupt the MCMT-PCNA interaction, which suggests that p21(WAF1) may regulate methylation by blocking access of MCMT to PCNA.     Notes: Optical limiting effects in multiwalled carbon nanotubes have been observed in the visible and infrared spectral regions with nanosecond laser pulses. The multiwalled carbon nanotubes investigated include those suspended in distilled water and embedded in polymethyl methacrylate films. Among all the samples measured, the limiting performance of the carbon nanotube suspension is the best with the limiting threshold determined to be ∼1, 5, and 13 J/cm2 at 532, 700, and 1064 nm, respectively. The possible mechanism for the observed effects is discussed. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have investigated the spectral response of front-surface-illuminated GaN and AlGaN/GaN p-i-n ultraviolet photodetectors prepared by reactive molecular beam epitaxy on sapphire substrates. GaN homojunction p-i-n photodiodes exhibited a peaked response near the band edge. This enhanced response was absent in the AlGaN/GaN heterojunction p-i-n detectors. We analyzed the effect of p-layer thickness of the GaN p-i-n diodes on the magnitude of the peak photoresponse. The AlGaN/GaN photodiodes had a maximum zero-bias responsivity of 0.12 A/W at 364 nm, which decreased by more than 3 orders of magnitude for wavelengths longer than 390 nm. A reverse bias of −10 V raised the responsivity to 0.15 A/W without any significant increase in noise. The root-mean-square noise current in a 1 Hz bandwidth is ∼1.0 pA, corresponding to a noise-equivalent-power of ∼8.3 pW. We measured extremely fast decay times of 12 ns for the AlGaN/GaN and 29 ns for the GaN photodiodes. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Unlike crystals producing sharp peaks under the x-ray diffraction, disordered materials show slowly varying patterns presenting little structural information. This is due to the fact that only the scattering intensity can be recorded, and the loss of the phase information makes the Fourier inversion of the amplitude impossible. However, when an amorphous sample is placed on a crystal, the x-ray intensity diffracted by the assembly can produce a hologram which contains the spatial modulation of both density functions. Therefore, with known crystal structure the electron density of the amorphous specimen can be resolved by holographic technique. Moreover, it is found that only the amorphous scattering data are needed, and the Bragg peak(s) can be dropped. This gives the scheme the same noise tolerance as by the ordinary amorphous diffraction. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Photoluminescence, Raman, and Hall measurements are reported for Mg doped GaN films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The compressive and tensile stress determined by the Raman shift of the phonon lines is due to the growth conditions rather than the presence of Mg in the film. The photoluminescence peak of near band-to-band transitions is also shifted to larger (smaller) energies by the compressive (tensile) stress. The study of the longitudinal optical phonon of the A1 branch shows that its Raman line shape is affected mostly by the crystalline quality of the film. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The adsorption and dissociation of H2S on GaAs(100) has been studied using high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy, thermal desorption spectroscopy, and isotope exchange techniques. The dissociative adsorption of H2S at 100 K produces only H–As species with a vibrational frequency of 2072 cm−1. Upon warming to 200 K, the vibration of H–As clearly shifts to 2105 cm−1, corresponding to a free H–As species. In addition, the formation of H–Ga (1887 cm−1) is also observed upon thermal annealing. In coadsorption studies of H2S and D atoms, three main desorption features of H2S were observed at 135, 200, and 375 K, respectively. The peaks at 135 and 375 K can be attributed to the desorption of molecularly adsorbed H2S and the recombinative desorption of adsorbed H and HS, respectively. In addition to the 375 K peak, the desorption feature at 200 K also undergoes isotope exchange between coadsorbed D atoms and H2S. These observations strongly suggest that the dissociative adsorption of H2S on GaAs(100) involves an intermediate of Ga–HS—H–As. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A transparent population modelling approach is used to analyse a large-scale extensive fish culture system, the bighead carp, Aristichthys nobilis (Richardson 1845), fishery in a Chinese reservoir. The population model incorporates explicit submodels for density-dependent growth and size-dependent mortality, and allows the assessment of stocking density, seed fish size, fishing mortality (fishing effort), and gear selectivity. The process of model building and parameter estimation from stocking and catch data is described in detail. The full analysis is carried out in computer spreadsheets where all model components are visible and can easily be modified to take account of specific conditions, or to explore different assumptions. The practical use of the model in management decision making is discussed, together with data requirements and the possible need for experimental management.
