Notes: A finite-element analysis of Taylor flow in a cylindrical capillary was performed using a commercial FEM program (FIDAP) to solve the fundamental fluid dynamics equations together with the capillary forces at the gas-liquid interface. A moving-surface formulation was used to calculate the bubble shape. The thickness of the liquid film surrounding the gas bubble, the degree of mixing in the liquid phase, and the slip velocity between the two phases were calculated. These parameters influence the performance of monolith reactors operating in the Taylor flow regime. On comparison with experimental results it was found that the FEM calculation generally predicts a thinner liquid film, which can possibly be explained in terms of a peripheral variation in surface tension. Moreover, the wavelength of the wiggles predicted in the liquid film near the tail end of the bubble was compared to those arising from a simplified mathematical analysis available in the literature. Good agreement was found for Ca 〈 0.005, while for higher Ca the FEM predicts significantly shorter wavelengths, indicating that the lubrication theory is not valid here.

Notes: An overview of Electro-Magnetic Tomography (EMT) using mutual inductance measurements is presented. The paper reviews the technique and principle of operation and gives a description of three case studies, which cover some of the generic design considerations and which illustrate the potential variety for inductive EMT systems. Results from the systems are described. These systems are presently experimental and possible future developments and applications are discussed.

Notes: The theory of gradient elution under hydrostatic equilibrium is developed for the case where only one reservoir and one mixing chamber are used and where both solvents have equal densities. Given the shapes of the two vessels, effluent concentration curve equations are deduced for different mixing chamber-reservoir combinations. On the other hand, given the equation for the effluent concentration curve, the reservoir cross-sectional area, as a function of height, can be deduced when the mixing chamber has a constant cross-section. The varying cross-section of the reservoir is accomplished by inserting thin discs of different areas on top of one another inside a regular vessel of constant cross-section.Except for complicated gradients, a given gradient can be accomplished using a reservoir with a cross-sectional area which varies linearly with height. In the case of complex gradients, a reservoir having two or more linear segments becomes necessary. A numerical method is given for the calculation of the continuously varying reservoir cross-section for the exact duplication of a given gradient.

Notes: The theory of composite chromatographic columns has been re-examined and general equations relating their efficiency to those of individual columns were derived. The derivations were based on elementary principles without reference to the principle of variance additivity. Derived also, were general equations for the efficiency of columns with continuously varying diameters, HETP and other properties from which formulae for special cases of practical interest were deduced. An example comparing the efficiencies of two columns, one conical and the other composite was given. The calculations show clearly that the conical column is superior in efficiency for the same total length and total retention volume.
