Description: It has been widely suggested that space photography may be used for updating maps of transportation networks. Proponents of the argument have suggested that color space photographs of the resolution obtained with Hasselblad 80 mm lenses (about 300 feet) contain enough useful information to update the extensions of major U. S. highways. The present study systematically documents for the Dallas-Fort Worth area the potential of such space photography in detecting, and to a lesser degree identifying, the existing road networks. Color separation plates and an enlargement of the color photograph were produced and all visible roads traced onto transparencies for study. Major roads and roads under construction were the most visible while lower class roads and roads in urban areas had the poorest return. Road width and classification were found to be the major determinant in visibility, varying from 100 per cent visible for divided highways to 15 per cent visible of bladed earth roads. In summary, space photographs of this resolution proved to be difficult to use for accurate road delineation. Only super highways in rural areas with the greatest road-width were completely identifiable, the width being about 1/3 that of the resolution cell.

Description: Phase 2 (development) which was concluded for the ultrasonic Doppler device and the light-pipe-reflectance device is reported. An ultrasonic Doppler breadboard system was assembled which accurately measured runout in the J-2 LOX pump impeller during operation. The transducer was mounted on the outside of the pump volute using a C-clamp. Vibration was measured by conducting the ultrasonic wave through the volute housing and through the fluid in the volute to the impeller surface. The impeller vibration was also measured accurately using the light-pipe probe mounted in an elastomeric-gland fitting in the pump case. A special epoxy resin developed for cryogenic applications was forced into the end of the fiber-optic probe to retain the fibers. Subsequently, the probe suffered no damage after simultaneous exposure to 2150 psi and 77 F. Preliminary flash X-radiographs were taken of the turbine wheel and the shaft-bearing-seal assembly, using a 2-megavolt X-ray unit. Reasonable resolution and contrast was obtained. A fast-neutron detector was fabricated and sensitivity was measured. The results demonstrated that the technique is feasible for integrated-time measurements requiring, perhaps, 240 revolutions to obtain sufficient exposure at 35,000 rpm. The experimental verification plans are included.

Description: Noncontacting, nondestructive techniques to measure vibrations and deflections of parts in future LOX and LH2 multistage turbopump prototypes are reported. The measurements include shaft vibration, vibration of turbine wheel and blades, blade clearance, vibration of impellers, value component flutter, and vibration of face seal components. Three techniques were selected for development: ultrasonic Doppler devices, flash X-ray, and light-pipe reflectance.

Notes: Mass spectra of a series of stable isotope derivatives aided a structure elucidation study of an amino acid amide (Tyr-NH2) and the following family of synthetic oligopeptides: Gly-Tyr-NH2, Gly-Gly-Tyr-NH2, Gln-Gly-Gly-Tyr-NH2, Gln-Gln-Gly-Gly-Tyr-NH2, Ala-Gln-Gln-Gly-Gly-Tyr-NH2, Ser-Ala-Gln-Gln-Gly-Gly-Tyr-NH2 and Lys-Ser-Ala-Gln-Gln-Gly-Gly-Tyr-NH2. This series of peptides was synthesized by classical methods. N,O-permethylated, N-acetylated derivatives were synthesized to provide sufficient volatility for mass spectrometry. Various combinations of stable isotope derivatives (CH3CO + CH3, CD3CO + CH3, CH3CO + CD3, CD3CO + CD3) confirmed proposed fragmentation pathways and corroborated hypothetical ion structures. This family of oligopeptides corresponds to the C-terminus of scotophobin.

Notes: An analog multiple ion detection system has been developed for magnetic sector mass spectrometers based on accelerating voltage alternation in conjunction with the accurate maintenance of focusing by means of voltage sweeping, using a superimposed a.c. sine wave voltage. This multiple ion detector voltage sweep system is easily constructed, inexpensive and produces analytical data of much greater precision than that reported from conventional systems. The application of the multiple ion detector voltage sweep system to biomedical problems is illustrated by the development of a method for the determination of stable isotope enrichment in blood glucose and alanine in children infused with tetradeuterio-L-alanine and dideuterioglucose to study gluconeogenesis and glucose utilization in vivo.

Notes: The field ionization and electron impact mass spectra of eleven coumarins have been compared. In the field ion spectra the molecular ions were the base peaks and structurally diagnostic fragment ions formed by direct cleavage were present, whereas the molecular ions were weak in the electron impact spectra and fragment ions formed by rearrangement were dominant. Crude coumarin mixtures obtained from natural sources have been successfully examined using field ionization and gas chromatography + field ionization mass spectrometry.

Notes: The most abundant fragment produced by electron bombardment of esters of the type R1R2C(OR3)CO2R4 is the R1R2C = \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm O}\limits^{{\rm + } \cdot } $\end{document}R3 ion. Methyl glycollate (R1 = R2 = R3 = H, R4 = Me) eliminates the HCO· radical by a complex rearrangement involving the methylenic hydrogen atoms. The methyl and ethyl esters of methoxyacetic acid (R1 = R2 = H, R3 = Me, R4 = Me or Et) eliminate formaldehyde by the McLafferty rearrangement.

Notes: Field desorption mass spectrometry (FD-MS) yields differentiated spectra for unshielded α- and β-stereoisomeric glycosides. The small but characteristic differences enable a distinction to be made between the two isomers. Valuable structural information can be deduced from the simple cleavage between the sugar moiety of the molecule and the aglycon. A short comparison with electron-impact (EI) and field ionisation (FI) spectra is given.

Notes: This account describes a rapid and accurate fusion technique of X-ray fluorescence analysis that is based on the method of Norrish and Hutton,1 but modified from the latter in a number of respects to enable more rapid preparation and processing of samples without any loss of accuracy. The technique allows a wide range of materials to be analysed including silicate rocks and minerals, cements, bricks, carbonates, evaporites, soils and some ores.
