Description: The authors consider how and by how much China's stellar economic performance might be impaired by eight potential adversities that China may face in the next decade: unemployment, poverty, and social unrest; corruption; HIV/AIDS and epidemic diseases; water resource problems and pollution; energy consumption and prices; the fragile financial system and state-owned enterprises; curtailed foreign direct investment; and serious military conflicts.

Description: As U.S. military forces appear overcommitted and some ponder a possible return to the draft, the timing is ideal for a review of how the American military transformed itself over the past five decades, from a poorly disciplined force of conscripts and draft-motivated "volunteers" to a force of professionals revered throughout the world. Starting in the early 1960s, this account runs through the current war in Iraq, with alternating chapters on the history of the all-volunteer force and the analytic background that supported decisionmaking. The author participated as an analyst and government policymaker in many of the events covered in this book. His insider status and access offer a behind-the-scenes look at decisionmaking within the Pentagon and White House. The book includes a foreword by former Secretary of Defense Melvin R. Laird. The accompanying DVD contains more than 1,700 primary-source documents-government memoranda, Presidential memos and letters, staff papers, and reports-linked directly from citations in the electronic version of the book. This unique technology presents a treasure trove of materials for specialists, researchers, and students of military history, public administration, and government affairs to draw upon.

Description: The geological record encodes the relationship between climate and atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) over long and short timescales, as well as potential drivers of evolutionary transitions. However, reconstructing CO 2 beyond direct measurements requires the use of paleoproxies and herein lies the challenge, as proxies differ in their assumptions, degree of understanding, and even reconstructed values. In this study, we critically evaluated, categorized, and integrated available proxies to create a high-fidelity and transparently constructed atmospheric CO 2 record spanning the past 66 million years. This newly constructed record provides clearer evidence for higher Earth system sensitivity in the past and for the role of CO 2 thresholds in biological and cryosphere evolution. Editor’s summary The concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide is a fundamental driver of climate, but its value is difficult to determine for times older than the roughly 800,000 years for which ice core records are available. The Cenozoic Carbon dioxide Proxy Integration Project (CenCO2PIP) Consortium assessed a comprehensive collection of proxy determinations to define the atmospheric carbon dioxide record for the past 66 million years. This synthesis provides the most complete record yet available and will help to better establish the role of carbon dioxide in climate, biological, and cryosphere evolution. — H. Jesse Smith

Description: In Repentance for the Holocaust, C. K. Martin Chung develops the biblical idea of "turning" (tshuvah) into a conceptual framework to analyze a particular area of contemporary German history, commonly referred to as Vergangenheitsbewältigung or "coming to terms with the past." Chung examines a selection of German responses to the Nazi past, their interaction with the victims’ responses, such as those from Jewish individuals, and their correspondence with biblical repentance. In demonstrating the victims’ influence on German responses, Chung asserts that the phenomenon of Vergangenheitsbewältigung can best be understood in a relational, rather than a national, paradigm. By establishing the conformity between those responses to past atrocities and the idea of "turning," Chung argues that the religious texts from the Old Testament encapsulating this idea (especially the Psalms of Repentance) are viable intellectual resources for dialogues among victims, perpetrators, bystanders, and their descendants in the discussion of guilt and responsibility, justice and reparation, remembrance and reconciliation. It is a great irony that after Nazi Germany sought to eliminate each and every single Jew within its reach, postwar Germans have depended on the Jewish device of repentance as a feasible way out of their unparalleled national catastrophe and unprecedented spiritual ruin.

Description: Puga geothermal zone is one of the most promising geothermal zone holds significant potential as a source of alternative power (~20 MWe) within its abundant geothermal resources located in the Tso Morari region south of Indus Suture zone, NW Himalayas, India. The widespread occurrence of vigorous Igneous activity along the Indus-Tsangpo Suture zone in the form of geothermal springs is believed to be linked to the Indo-Eurasian collision that took place from the Upper Cretaceous to late Tertiary age. This geothermal zone is distinguished by presence of boiling springs, geysers and hydrothermal deposits situated at an altitude of 4600 m above the sea level with a subsurface temperature can reach a high of 1300C at a depth of 60 m. To investigate the geothermal manifestations, 62 magnetotelluric (MT) sites were strategically positioned within close proximity to the Puga geothermal zone to gain a comprehensive understanding of subsurface resistivity distribution. The dimensionality analysis (Bahr skew, phase tensor) indicates the complex subsurface formation. Furthermore, we have carried out 2D and 3D modelling of MT data indicate that there is a surface conductivity anomaly (~50-100 Ohm. m) extending to a depth of 2 km. This anomaly separates a resistive formation that is geologically linked to a Kiagor Tso Fault (KTF). The study also uncovered a high conductivity anomaly in the upper and lower crust situated west of and beneath the Puga valley could be caused by the presence of aqueous fluids and partial melts resulting from the collision orogeny of the Himalayas.
