    Description: Villarrica Volcano is an active ice-covered volcano in southern Chile (2847 m a.s.l., 39°25’12’’ S, 71°56’27’’W), with a current glacier extent of 23.6 km〈sup〉2〈/sup〉. To investigate meteorological conditions and the impact of ongoing climatic warming on glacier melt, an automatic weather station (AWS) was installed at 1900 m a.s.l. on a tephra-covered surface in the glacier ablation zone in December 2019, providing continuous measurements of meteorological variables and tephra temperatures. To give further insight into the turbulent fluxes of sensible and latent heat at the glacier surface, an eddy covariance system, consisting of a parallel-mounted 3D sonic anemometer and krypton hygrometer, was deployed over tephra and snow surfaces close to the AWS between 12-16 January 2023. During the summer, snow and ice are subject to intense insolation and positive air temperatures, with high melt rates further amplified by surface darkening from windblown low-albedo tephra. In contrast, ice beneath extensive areas of tephra cover in the lower ablation zone is effectively insulated, with much lower ablation rates. Both tephra and snow exhibit predominantly negative latent heat fluxes, indicating surface water evaporation, with notably high magnitude and variable fluxes at the tephra site during the afternoon when surface temperature exceeds 35°C. The snow site is predominantly a sink of atmospheric sensible heat, due to positive air temperatures, while the tephra site alternates between positive and negative sensible heat fluxes, determined by high daytime and low night-time surface temperature, respectively. These measurements will be used to inform approaches to modelling the turbulent fluxes.

    Description: We review in this work the activities carried out by our geoscience research group using historical data especially focused on the Extremadura region (SW Spain). We describe some recent works such as the use of correspondence by the Duke of Feria to create precipitation and temperature indices for the period 1750-1840 or the systematic recovery of old meteorological data (including data on unusual variables related to solar radiation). We also describe the work we are doing recovering news about events of interest in geosciences from regional newspapers (meteorological phenomena, earthquakes, fireballs, aurorae at low latitude, ...). Finally, we show a rare episode of great thunderstorms that devastated the Extremadura region in June 1925.

    Description: Precipitation in the tropics is dominated by variability on seasonal, intraseasonal and diurnal scales. However, at the finest spatial scales, this variability can be strongly modulated by numerous local factors that represent a range of physical processes. One aspect of this modulation that operates across multiple scales is the orientation of coastal and inland topography relative to the background wind. This is particularly relevant where complex topography occurs in the vicinity of tropical coastlines, which can cause local changes in moisture flux convergence. Another aspect is the coupling of the diurnal cycle to changes in surface heating, surface moisture, column moisture, background wind and cloudiness. This link between clouds, radiation and diurnally forced convection forges a two-way interaction between the intraseasonal scales and mesoscale variability. Further to these modulating factors, propagating disturbances from neighbouring coastlines, and interactions between coastal processes across adjacent seas introduces a non-local mesoscale source of variability, particularly amidst the complex archipelago of the Maritime Continent. These processes also occur outside the deep tropics, where the added complexity of mid-latitude interactions contributes to the overall variation in precipitation. Multiple spatial and temporal scales are impacted by these competing sources of variability, which presents a challenge in quantifying their representation and impact in weather and climate models. This has implications for weather prediction and down-scaling of climate change projections. This talk will examine some of the local manifestations of scale-interactions in tropical Queensland (Australia) and the Maritime Continent, using diverse observational datasets and high-resolution numerical modelling.

Ocean acidification is close to being breached, while aerosol loading regionally exceeds the boundary. Stratospheric ozone levels have slightly recovered. The transgression level has increased for all boundaries earlier identified as overstepped. As primary production drives Earth system biosphere functions, human appropriation of net primary production is proposed as a control variable for functional biosphere integrity. This boundary is also transgressed. Earth system modeling of different levels of the transgression of the climate and land system change boundaries illustrates that these anthropogenic impacts on Earth system must be considered in a systemic context.

    Description: The Central and South Atlantic represents a vast ocean area and is home to a diverse range of ecosystems and species. Nevertheless, and similar to the rest of the global south, the area is comparatively understudied yet exposed to increasing levels of multisectoral pressures. To counteract this, the level of scientific exploration in the Central and South Atlantic has increased in recent years and will likely continue to do so within the context of the United Nations (UN) Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. Here, we compile the literature to investigate the distribution of previous scientific exploration of offshore (30 m+) ecosystems in the Central and South Atlantic, both within and beyond national jurisdiction, allowing us to synthesise overall patterns of biodiversity. Furthermore, through the lens of sustainable management, we have reviewed the existing anthropogenic activities and associated management measures relevant to the region. Through this exercise, we have identified key knowledge gaps and undersampled regions that represent priority areas for future research and commented on how these may be best incorporated into, or enhanced through, future management measures such as those in discussion at the UN Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction negotiations. This review represents a comprehensive summary for scientists and managers alike looking to understand the key topographical, biological, and legislative features of the Central and South Atlantic.

    Description: The dynamics of marine systems at decadal scales are notoriously hard to predict—hence references to this timescale as the “grey zone” for ocean prediction. Nevertheless, decadal-scale prediction is a rapidly developing field with an increasing number of applications to help guide ocean stewardship and sustainable use of marine environments. Such predictions can provide industry and managers with information more suited to support planning and management over strategic timeframes, as compared to seasonal forecasts or long-term (century-scale) predictions. The most significant advances in capability for decadal-scale prediction over recent years have been for ocean physics and biogeochemistry, with some notable advances in ecological prediction skill. In this paper, we argue that the process of “lighting the grey zone” by providing improved predictions at decadal scales should also focus on including human dimensions in prediction systems to better meet the needs and priorities of end users. Our paper reviews information needs for decision-making at decadal scales and assesses current capabilities for meeting these needs. We identify key gaps in current capabilities, including the particular challenge of integrating human elements into decadal prediction systems. We then suggest approaches for overcoming these challenges and gaps, highlighting the important role of co-production of tools and scenarios, to build trust and ensure uptake with end users of decadal prediction systems. We also highlight opportunities for combining narratives and quantitative predictions to better incorporate the human dimension in future efforts to light the grey zone of decadal-scale prediction.

    Description: In this work, we evaluate the SUPIM-INPE model prediction of the 14 December 2020, total solar eclipse over the South American continent. We compare the predictions with data from multiple instruments for monitoring the ionosphere and with different obscuration percentages (i.e., Jicamarca, 12.0°S, 76.8°W, 17%; Tucumán 26.9°S, 65.4° W, 49%; Chillán 36.6°S, 72.0°W; and Bahía Blanca, 38.7°S, 62.3°W, reach 95% obscuration) due to the eclipse. The analysis is done under total eclipse conditions and non-total eclipse conditions. Results obtained suggest that the model was able to reproduce with high accuracy both the daily variation and the eclipse impacts of E and F1 layers in the majority of the stations evaluated (except in Jicamarca station). The comparison at the F2 layer indicates small differences (〈7.8%) between the predictions and observations at all stations during the eclipse periods. Additionally, statistical metrics reinforce the conclusion of a good performance of the model. Predicted and calibrated Total Electron Content (TEC, using 3 different techniques) are also compared. Results show that, although none of the selected TEC calibration methods have a good agreement with the SUPIM-INPE prediction, they exhibit similar trends in most of the cases. We also analyze data from the Jicamarca Incoherent Scatter Radar (ISR), and Swarm-A and GOLD missions. The electron temperature changes observed in ISR and Swarm-A are underestimated by the prediction. Also, important changes in the O/N2 ratio due to the eclipse, have been observed with GOLD mission data. Thus, future versions of the SUPIM-INPE model for eclipse conditions should consider effects on thermospheric winds and changes in composition, specifically in the O/N2 ratio.

    Description: Microfaunal assemblages of benthic foraminifera, ostracods, and tintinnids from two marine sediment cores retrieved from the Herschel Basin of the Canadian Beaufort Sea shelf document relationships with environmental parameters such as salinity, sea-ice cover, and turbulence. Cores YC18-HB-GC01 and PG2303-1 were collected at 18 and 32 m water depth, respectively. At these sites, sediment accumulation rates range between 0.6 and 1.7 cm yr–1 allowing a near-annual temporal resolution over the last 50 years. Multivariate analyses indicate that benthic foraminiferal assemblages respond primarily to food supply. Dissimilarities between the microfaunal assemblages of the two cores are mainly the result of bottom water salinity levels linked to water depth. High abundance of the benthic foraminiferal species Elphidium clavatum and occurrences of Elphidium bartletti point to varying, but relatively low, salinities at the shallow core site YC18-HB-GC01, which may be affected by variations in the summer halocline depth. Higher species diversity and more abundant Cassidulina reniforme and Stainforthia feylingi characterize the deeper core PG2303-1, which might reflect more stable conditions and higher bottom-water salinities throughout the studied time interval. The most important microfaunal shift of the last 50 years, observed in the shallower longer core YC18-HB-GC01, occurred at the turn of the 21st century. Prior to ∼2000 CE, the presence of Islandiella norcrossi indicates more stable and saline conditions. Since ∼2000 CE, increased abundances of Haynesina nivea and of the ciliate Tintinnopsis fimbriata suggest decreased salinity and increased turbidity. An increased abundance of Eoeponidella pulchella after ∼2000 CE suggests a concurrent increase in productivity in the last two decades. This shift is nearly synchronous with a decrease in mean summer sea-ice concentration, which can play an important role in bottom water stability on the shelf. Easterly winds can induce a reduction in the sea-ice cover, but also foster a westward spreading of the Mackenzie River plume and the upwelling of nutrient-rich Pacific waters onto the shelf. Both factors would explain the increased freshening and productivity of the Herschel Basin. The last two decades were also marked by a decrease in ostracod abundance that may relate to higher water turbidity. This study shows that combining information from benthic foraminifera, ostracods, and tintinnids provides a comprehensive insight into recent hydrographic/climatic changes in nearshore Arctic habitats, where productivity is critical for the food security of local communities.
