Description: Significance: A central goal in invasion genomics is to identify and determine the mechanisms that underlie the successful colonization, establishment, and subsequent range expansion of invasive populations of nonindigenous species. Using a whole-genome approach, we evaluate the importance of genetic diversity for the successful establishment of nonindigenous species. Our study shows that genetic diversity per se is not the major factor driving invasions, since we observed all possible scenarios with invasive populations showing reduced, similar but also increased, genetic diversity relative to the native population. Using coalescent methods, we reconstruct the demographic history of the invasion and infer the source population of each invasion event, which shows that propagule pressure and multiple introductions play an important role in determining invasion success. Abstract: Invasion rates have increased in the past 100 y irrespective of international conventions. What characterizes a successful invasion event? And how does genetic diversity translate into invasion success? Employing a whole-genome perspective using one of the most successful marine invasive species world-wide as a model, we resolve temporal invasion dynamics during independent invasion events in Eurasia. We reveal complex regionally independent invasion histories including cases of recurrent translocations, time-limited translocations, and stepping-stone range expansions with severe bottlenecks within the same species. Irrespective of these different invasion dynamics, which lead to contrasting patterns of genetic diversity, all nonindigenous populations are similarly successful. This illustrates that genetic diversity, per se, is not necessarily the driving force behind invasion success. Other factors such as propagule pressure and repeated introductions are an important contribution to facilitate successful invasions. This calls into question the dominant paradigm of the genetic paradox of invasions, i.e., the successful establishment of nonindigenous populations with low levels of genetic diversity.

Description: Perturbations to cellular homeostasis, including reduction of the cholesterol level, induce autophagy, a self-digestion process of cellular constituents through an autophagosomal–lysosomal pathway. In accord with its function as a membrane organizer and metabolic sentinel, the cellular response to cholesterol depletion comprises multiple phenomena, including the activation of transcriptional responses, accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and activation of stress-related signaling pathways. However, the molecular mechanisms by which cholesterol depletion regulates autophagy and the putative involvement of transcriptional responses, ROS and/or stress-related signaling in autophagy regulation in this biological context are not fully understood. Here, we find that cholesterol depletion regulates autophagy at three different levels. First, employing RNA-seq, we show that cholesterol depletion increases the expression of autophagy-related genes independent of ROS or JNK activity. Second, analysis of LC3 lipidation and intracellular localization, and of p62 levels and degradation kinetics, reveals that cholesterol depletion mediates autophagy induction while interfering with autophagic flux. Of note, only the latter depends on ROS accumulation and JNK activity. In view of the common use of cholesterol-reducing drugs as therapeutic agents, our findings have important implications for multiple cellular settings in which autophagy plays a prominent role.

Description: The data contain time series of optical-equivalent snow grain size (r_opt) retrieved from airborne spectral surface albedo measurements North of Greenland during PAMARCMiP (Polar Airborne Measurements and Arctic Regional Climate Model Simulation Project) in spring 2018. The data of three flights were measured under cloudless, low Sun, and partly rough surface conditions. Snow r_opt was retrieved from two wavelength approaches based on spectral surface albedo data using (i) the albedo ratio between 1280 nm and 1100 nm wavelength (ratio-method), and (ii) the surface albedo at 1700 nm (1700nm-method). The corresponding spectral surface albedo (also included in the data set) was derived from measurements by the Spectral Modular Airborne Radiation measurement sysTem (SMART) mounted on the Polar 5 research aircraft operated by AWI.

Description: Longwave and shortwave cloud radiative forcing derived from broadband irradiance observations during the AFLUX (Airborne measurements of radiative and turbulent FLUXes of energy and momentum in the Arctic boundary layer, March / April 2019) and the ACLOUD (Arctic CLoud Observations Using airborne measurements during polar Day, May / June 2017) campaign. This dataset contains only low-level flight sections. In addition, a cloud liquid water path equivalent derived from the shortwave transmissivity is given and a cloud-free albedo estimate during cloudy observations. The cloud radiative forcing over sea ice during ACLOUD (https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.909289) is extented to the entire marginal sea ice zone in this dataset.
