    Effects of surface treatments on flux tunable transmon qubits (2021)

    Description: One of the main limitations in state-of-the art solid-state quantum processors is qubit decoherence and relaxation due to noise from adsorbates on surfaces, impurities at interfaces, and material defects. For the field to advance towards full fault-tolerant quantum computing, a better understanding of these microscopic noise sources is therefore needed. Here, we use an ultra-high vacuum package to study the impact of vacuum loading, UV-light exposure, and ion irradiation treatments on relaxation and coherence times, as well as slow parameter fluctuations of flux tunable superconducting transmon qubits. The treatments studied do not significantly impact the relaxation rate Γ1 and the echo decay rate $${{{Gamma }}}_{2,{{{ m{SS}}}}}^{{{{ m{e}}}}}$$ Γ 2 , SS e at the sweet spot, except for Ne ion bombardment which reduces Γ1. In contrast, flux noise parameters are improved by removing magnetic adsorbates from the chip surfaces with UV-light and NH3 treatments. Additionally, we demonstrate that SF6 ion bombardment can be used to adjust qubit frequencies in situ and post-fabrication without affecting qubit relaxation and coherence times at the sweet spot.

    Description: This book presents the VISCERAL project benchmarks for analysis and retrieval of 3D medical images (CT and MRI) on a large scale, which used an innovative cloud-based evaluation approach where the image data were stored centrally on a cloud infrastructure and participants placed their programs in virtual machines on the cloud. The book presents the points of view of both the organizers of the VISCERAL benchmarks and the participants. The book is divided into five parts. Part I presents the cloud-based benchmarking and Evaluation-as-a-Service paradigm that the VISCERAL benchmarks used. Part II focuses on the datasets of medical images annotated with ground truth created in VISCERAL that continue to be available for research. It also covers the practical aspects of obtaining permission to use medical data and manually annotating 3D medical images efficiently and effectively. The VISCERAL benchmarks are described in Part III, including a presentation and analysis of metrics used in evaluation of medical image analysis and search. Lastly, Parts IV and V present reports by some of the participants in the VISCERAL benchmarks, with Part IV devoted to the anatomy benchmarks and Part V to the retrieval benchmark. This book has two main audiences: the datasets as well as the segmentation and retrieval results are of most interest to medical imaging researchers, while eScience and computational science experts benefit from the insights into using the Evaluation-as-a-Service paradigm for evaluation and benchmarking on huge amounts of data.

    Description: Generationen von Fotografinnen und Fotografen aus der Schweiz und Deutschland machten sich zwischen 1920 und 1980 auf den Weg Richtung Indien: Ihre Bilder vom märchenhaften Wunderland, von Gandhi, von Hunger und Hippies existieren in ihrer ungebrochenen Widersprüchlichkeit bis heute fort.Der Zürcher Verleger und Fotograf Martin Hürlimann inszenierte Ende der 1920er Jahre Indien im Fotobuch und in Kulturzeitschriften als zeitlose Augenweide. Mit einem gewissen Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi geriet zugleich eine ganze Politelite als Akteurin im antikolonialen Widerstand durch zahlreiche Fotografien ins Bewusstsein. Bilder des Hungers wurden ikonisch und prägten insbesondere nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg die Wahrnehmung. Seit den 1960er Jahren bevölkerten Hippies in bunten Gewändern die Seiten der Illustrierten: »Der Trip« war das Ziel und Goa der spirituelle Sehnsuchtsort.Aus diesem Bilderschatz schöpft das Buch eine Kulturgeschichte westlicher Vorstellungen von Entwicklung, Kultur und Modernität im 20. Jahrhundert und legt dar wie diese im deutschsprachigen Raum in Bildern Indiens verhandelt wurden.

Der vorliegende Sammelband würdigt August Sauers Werk aus literatur-, kultur- und geschichtswissenschaftlicher Perspektive, bei der der kultur- und wissenschaftspolitische Kontext genauso in den Blick genommen wird wie der engere fachhistorische Rahmen.

    Description: Imperiale Situationen werden in den Kulturwissenschaften zunehmend auch als kulturell komplexe Möglichkeitsräume betrachtet. Wenig Aufmerksamkeit wurde bisher dem Verhältnis von subjektiv-individuellen und ‚kollektiven‘ Zugehörigkeitskonzepten gewidmet, wie auch der Frage, wie in imperialen Kontexten Selbst- und Fremdentwürfe verhandelt werden. Scheinbar homogene Größen wie Nation oder Region können dabei höchstens von teilweiser Bedeutung sein. Kulturelle Identitäten sind im Kontext imperialer Erfahrungen historisch und lebensweltlich „geschichteter", sie zeigen Merkmale der Gleichzeitigkeit unterschiedlicher Zeit- und Erfahrungsräume – und sie konstituieren und reflektieren sich nicht zuletzt in Erzählungen. Solchen Konstellationen und Erzählungen aus verschiedenen Zeiträumen geht das vorliegende Buch nach, wobei die Regionen Ost- und Südosteuropas im Fokus stehen, die besonders reiche und vielfältige Erfahrungen europäischer Identitätsbildung in imperialen Kontexten aufweisen. .

    Description: This open access book describes methods for research on and research through design. It posits that ethnography is an appropriate method for design research because it constantly orients itself, like design projects, towards social realities. In research processes, designers acquire project-specific knowledge, which happens mostly intuitively in practice. When this knowledge becomes the subject of reflection and explication, it strengthens the discipline of design and makes it more open to interdisciplinary dialogue. Through the use of the ethnographic method in design, this book shows how design researchers can question the certainties of the everyday world, deconstruct reality into singular aesthetic and semantic phenomena, and reconfigure them into new contexts of signification. It shows that design ethnography is a process in which the epistemic and creative elements flow into one another in iterative loops. The goal of design ethnography is not to colonize the discipline of design with a positivist and objectivist scientific ethos, but rather to reinforce and reflect upon the explorative and searching methods that are inherent to it. This innovative book is of interest to design researchers and professionals, including graphic artists, ethnographers, visual anthropologists and others involved with creative arts/media.

    Description: Die Landwirtschaft in Deutschland, Europa und weltweit befindet sich in einem dramatischen Umbruchprozess. Einerseits bieten Liberalisierung und Marktöffnung, neue technologische Entwicklungen, die wachsende Weltbevölkerung und neue Kundenwünsche vielen landwirtschaftlichen Betrieben neue Möglichkeiten. Andererseits stehen viele Landwirtinnen und Landwirte in internationaler Konkurrenz, sind zum betrieblichen Wachstum mit hohem Investitionsrisiko gezwungen, sind Teil strikt regulierter Wertschöpfungsketten und müssen steigenden gesellschaftlichen Ansprüchen genügen. Zugleich machen sich viele Menschen Sorgen, dass die Prozesse der Rationalisierung und Modernisierung der landwirtschaftlichen Produktion auf Kosten von Natur-, Umwelt- und Tierschutz gehen. Auf vielen Ebenen wird daher bereits nach einer neuen Verständigung darüber gesucht, was die Gesellschaft von der Landwirtschaft erwartet, und welche Unterstützung die Landwirtinnen und Landwirte im Gegenzug dafür erwarten dürfen. Vor diesem Hintergrund entwickelt das vorliegende Open Access-Buch eine wissenschaftlich fundierte Kritik der Umweltauswirkungen der Landwirtschaft und der politischen Logik der Agrarpolitik. Es präsentiert ein neues Leitbild mit konkreten Indikatoren sowie alternative strategische Handlungsoptionen. Die umfassende Analyse wird zu einem Vorschlag für eine neue Architektur der europäischen Agrarpolitik gebündelt, die eine breite Diskussion um einen Neuen Gesellschaftsvertrag für die Landwirtschaft in Deutschland und Europa anstoßen soll.

Utraquismus in Böhmen und der reformatorische Bewegung ab 1517 in Sachsen handelt es sich um zwei unterschiedliche Reformationen, jedoch mit einer Fülle von sachlichen und personalen Verbindungslinien. Diese rücken im vorliegenden Band erstmalig in einen gemeinsamen Fokus.»Wir sind alle Hussiten«, bekannte Martin Luther 1520 nach der Lektüre von Schriften des tschechischen Reformators Jan Hus, der gut einhundert Jahre zuvor als Ketzer verbrannt worden war. Die beiden Reformatoren verbinden, ebenso wie die von ihnen ausgehenden Erweckungs- und Erneuerungsbewegungen, viele Ähnlichkeiten, Übereinstimmungen und parallele Entwicklungsverläufe. Dennoch werden sie meist getrennt betrachtet. Der Sammelband analysiert Aspekte der Reformation in Böhmen und Sachsen und rückt so die beiden religiösen Brennpunkte in einen gemeinsamen Fokus. Methodisch wählen die Beiträgerinnen und Beiträger dabei einen kommunikationsgeschichtlichen Zugang.
