    Effects of surface treatments on flux tunable transmon qubits (2021)

    Description: One of the main limitations in state-of-the art solid-state quantum processors is qubit decoherence and relaxation due to noise from adsorbates on surfaces, impurities at interfaces, and material defects. For the field to advance towards full fault-tolerant quantum computing, a better understanding of these microscopic noise sources is therefore needed. Here, we use an ultra-high vacuum package to study the impact of vacuum loading, UV-light exposure, and ion irradiation treatments on relaxation and coherence times, as well as slow parameter fluctuations of flux tunable superconducting transmon qubits. The treatments studied do not significantly impact the relaxation rate Γ1 and the echo decay rate $${{{Gamma }}}_{2,{{{ m{SS}}}}}^{{{{ m{e}}}}}$$ Γ 2 , SS e at the sweet spot, except for Ne ion bombardment which reduces Γ1. In contrast, flux noise parameters are improved by removing magnetic adsorbates from the chip surfaces with UV-light and NH3 treatments. Additionally, we demonstrate that SF6 ion bombardment can be used to adjust qubit frequencies in situ and post-fabrication without affecting qubit relaxation and coherence times at the sweet spot.

    Cloud-Based Benchmarking of Medical Image Analysis (2021)

    Description: This book presents the VISCERAL project benchmarks for analysis and retrieval of 3D medical images (CT and MRI) on a large scale, which used an innovative cloud-based evaluation approach where the image data were stored centrally on a cloud infrastructure and participants placed their programs in virtual machines on the cloud. The book presents the points of view of both the organizers of the VISCERAL benchmarks and the participants. The book is divided into five parts. Part I presents the cloud-based benchmarking and Evaluation-as-a-Service paradigm that the VISCERAL benchmarks used. Part II focuses on the datasets of medical images annotated with ground truth created in VISCERAL that continue to be available for research. It also covers the practical aspects of obtaining permission to use medical data and manually annotating 3D medical images efficiently and effectively. The VISCERAL benchmarks are described in Part III, including a presentation and analysis of metrics used in evaluation of medical image analysis and search. Lastly, Parts IV and V present reports by some of the participants in the VISCERAL benchmarks, with Part IV devoted to the anatomy benchmarks and Part V to the retrieval benchmark. This book has two main audiences: the datasets as well as the segmentation and retrieval results are of most interest to medical imaging researchers, while eScience and computational science experts benefit from the insights into using the Evaluation-as-a-Service paradigm for evaluation and benchmarking on huge amounts of data.

Abstract In the crisis of 1989/90, the negotiations on the Maastricht Treaty offered ideal conditions for a European constitutional moment. But the public debate remained fragmented and focused on national interests — not least because of intergovernmental procedures, which gave more news value to the diplomatic context than to the constitutional content of the reform. With a detailed examination of the German, French and British press debates on this issue, this book provides empirical insights into a key phase of EU integration. Moreover, it offers analytical re-conceptualisation of the conditions of a European public sphere and of the relationship between political procedures and discourse structures.

    Description: Generationen von Fotografinnen und Fotografen aus der Schweiz und Deutschland machten sich zwischen 1920 und 1980 auf den Weg Richtung Indien: Ihre Bilder vom märchenhaften Wunderland, von Gandhi, von Hunger und Hippies existieren in ihrer ungebrochenen Widersprüchlichkeit bis heute fort.Der Zürcher Verleger und Fotograf Martin Hürlimann inszenierte Ende der 1920er Jahre Indien im Fotobuch und in Kulturzeitschriften als zeitlose Augenweide. Mit einem gewissen Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi geriet zugleich eine ganze Politelite als Akteurin im antikolonialen Widerstand durch zahlreiche Fotografien ins Bewusstsein. Bilder des Hungers wurden ikonisch und prägten insbesondere nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg die Wahrnehmung. Seit den 1960er Jahren bevölkerten Hippies in bunten Gewändern die Seiten der Illustrierten: »Der Trip« war das Ziel und Goa der spirituelle Sehnsuchtsort.Aus diesem Bilderschatz schöpft das Buch eine Kulturgeschichte westlicher Vorstellungen von Entwicklung, Kultur und Modernität im 20. Jahrhundert und legt dar wie diese im deutschsprachigen Raum in Bildern Indiens verhandelt wurden.

Wenig Aufmerksamkeit wurde bisher dem Verhältnis von subjektiv-individuellen und ‚kollektiven‘ Zugehörigkeitskonzepten gewidmet, wie auch der Frage, wie in imperialen Kontexten Selbst- und Fremdentwürfe verhandelt werden. Scheinbar homogene Größen wie Nation oder Region können dabei höchstens von teilweiser Bedeutung sein. Kulturelle Identitäten sind im Kontext imperialer Erfahrungen historisch und lebensweltlich „geschichteter", sie zeigen Merkmale der Gleichzeitigkeit unterschiedlicher Zeit- und Erfahrungsräume – und sie konstituieren und reflektieren sich nicht zuletzt in Erzählungen. Solchen Konstellationen und Erzählungen aus verschiedenen Zeiträumen geht das vorliegende Buch nach, wobei die Regionen Ost- und Südosteuropas im Fokus stehen, die besonders reiche und vielfältige Erfahrungen europäischer Identitätsbildung in imperialen Kontexten aufweisen. .

    Description: This open access book describes methods for research on and research through design. It posits that ethnography is an appropriate method for design research because it constantly orients itself, like design projects, towards social realities. In research processes, designers acquire project-specific knowledge, which happens mostly intuitively in practice. When this knowledge becomes the subject of reflection and explication, it strengthens the discipline of design and makes it more open to interdisciplinary dialogue. Through the use of the ethnographic method in design, this book shows how design researchers can question the certainties of the everyday world, deconstruct reality into singular aesthetic and semantic phenomena, and reconfigure them into new contexts of signification. It shows that design ethnography is a process in which the epistemic and creative elements flow into one another in iterative loops. The goal of design ethnography is not to colonize the discipline of design with a positivist and objectivist scientific ethos, but rather to reinforce and reflect upon the explorative and searching methods that are inherent to it. This innovative book is of interest to design researchers and professionals, including graphic artists, ethnographers, visual anthropologists and others involved with creative arts/media.
