    Description: In recent years, the permanent seismic networks worldwide have largely increased, raising the amount of earthquake signals and the applications using seismic records. Although characterization of the soil properties at recording stations has a large impact on hazard estimates, it has not been implemented so far in a standardized way for reaching high-level metadata. To address this issue, we built an online questionnaire for the identification of the indicators useful for a reliable site characterization at a seismic station. We analysed the answers of a large number of experts in different fields, which allowed us to rank 24 different indicators and to identify the most relevant ones: fundamental frequency (f0), shear-wave velocity profile (VS), time-averaged Vs over 30 m (VS30), depth of seismological and engineering bedrock (Hseis_bed and Heng_bed), surface geology and soil class. Moreover, the questionnaire proposed two additional indices in terms of cost and difficulty to obtain a reliable value of each indicator, showing that the selection of the most relevant indicators results from a complex balance between physical relevancy, average cost and reliability. For each indicator we propose a summary report, provided as editable pdf, containing the background information of data acquisition and processing details, with the aim to homogenize site metadata information at European level and to define the quality of the site characterization (see companion paper Di Giulio et al. 2021). The selected indicators and the summary reports have been shared within European and worldwide scientific community and discussed in a dedicated international workshop. They represent a first attempt to reach a homogeneous set of high-level metadata for site characterization.

    Description: We study the temporal evolution of the circuit complexity after the local quench where two harmonic chains are suddenly joined, choosing the initial state as the reference state. We discuss numerical results for the complexity for the entire chain and the subsystem complexity for a block of consecutive sites, obtained by exploiting the Fisher information geometry of the covariance matrices. The qualitative behaviour of the temporal evolutions of the subsystem complexity depends on whether the joining point is inside the subsystem. The revivals and a logarithmic growth observed during these temporal evolutions are discussed. When the joining point is outside the subsystem, the temporal evolutions of the subsystem complexity and of the corresponding entanglement entropy are qualitatively similar.

Upper and lower bounds are derived for the temporal evolution of the complexity for the entire system. The subsystem complexity is evaluated by employing the Fisher information geometry for the covariance matrices. We discuss numerical results for the temporal evolutions of the subsystem complexity for a block of consecutive sites in harmonic chains with either periodic or Dirichlet boundary conditions, comparing them with the temporal evolutions of the entanglement entropy. For infinite harmonic chains, the asymptotic value of the subsystem complexity is studied through the generalised Gibbs ensemble.

    Description: The dynamic cone penetration test (DPT) developed in China has been correlated with liquefaction resistance of gravelly soils based on field performance data from theMw7.9Wenchuan earthquake.With a diameter of 74 mm, DPT would be less sensitive to gravel size particles than the SPT or CPT and could be a viable assessment tool depending on gravel size and percentage. In this study, liquefaction resistance is evaluated using four DPT soundings with two hammer energies and shear wave velocity (VS) measurements in Avasinis, Italy, where gravelly sand liquefied in the 1976 Friuli, Italy, earthquake. The DPT correctly predicted liquefaction at three sites where liquefaction was observed; however, it also predicted liquefaction in a highly stratified silt and silty gravel profile where ejecta was not observed. This failure appears to be a result of the “system response” of the profile, which impeded ejecta as identified at similar stratified sites in New Zealand. VS1-based triggering curves often predicted no liquefaction at sites where liquefaction was observed, suggesting that the boundary curves may need to shift to the right for gravelly soils. Standard SPT energy corrections were found to be reasonable for the DPT.

    Description: This work focuses on site response analyses in the Amatrice area (Central Italy), taking advantage of the 3A temporary seismic network, installed after the first shock (MW 6.0) of the 2016–2017 seismic sequence, and of a detailed site characterization. Classical empirical methods are applied on seismic signals to evaluate their capabilities to infer site response parameters. For about one-third of the stations, the H/V method fails in estimating the empirical SSR amplification function, as a consequence of the vertical amplification. Although the majority of sites belong to the EC8-B soil category, all the empirical methods show great variability in the site responses. For this reason, to find common features among the sites we perform a cluster analysis on SSR functions finding 5 clusters characterized by three site parameters: VS,30, f0 and Af0 (i.e microtremor H/V amplitude at f0). This result seems promising for site response estimation in Central Italy from velocity profiles and noise measurements.

    Description: Central Italy was affected by a long seismic sequence in 2016 and 2017, characterized by five main-shocks with Mw〉5.0. The Mw 6.5 mainshock occurred on 30 October 2016 close to the town of Norcia, located in the intra-Apennine Norcia basin. Different degrees of damages were observed during this seismic crisis, caused by a variable seismic shaking. This was also due to important 1D and 2D variation of Quaternary fluvio-lacustrine sediments infilling the basin. Following such considerations, a new geophysical dataset of seismic vibration measurements was acquired in the study area during the period April 2017-November 2019. We collected mainly single-seismic station noise data, to infer the distribution of resonance frequency (f0) of the basin. A total of 60 sites were measured to cover the entire extension in the basin. We deployed seismometers along three transects of a total length of 21 km, mostly along the main structural directions of the basin (i.e. NNW-SSE and NE-SW). Two 2D arrays of seismic stations with a elicoidal-shaped geometry, and a set of MASW active data were also acquired in the northern sector of the basin, in order to better constrain the seismic velocity of the sedimentary infilling. These new records have been integrated with available geological information in order to reconstruct the deep structure of the basin, as discussed in the research paper by [2]. The entire dataset used in [2] is here provided, together with 7 additional records recovered for the basin (i.e. N54-N60) and ancillary open-source geospatial data. The dataset can be used for different purposes: specific research on the Norcia basin, comparative studies on similar areas around the world, development of new data modeling and testing of new analysis software, and as a training dataset for machine learning applications.

    Description: Ambient vibrations are nowadays considerably used worldwide for numerous types of engineering applications and scientific research. Geopsy and its companion tools are part of that landscape. Since the first release of the program package in 2005, as outcome of the European Union project Site Effects aSsessment from AMbient noisE, Geopsy has become a mature multiplatform open-source package (released under GNU Public License version 3) that has already been recognized as a reference tool for analyzing ambient vibration data in the context of site characterization studies. The community of users has grown from a core group of researchers up to thousands of seismologists and engineers on every career level and on all continents. The versatility of geopsy allows for the processing of all kinds of data needed in site characterization studies, that is, from single station single trace to three-component array recordings. In all of the aforementioned cases, the steps from field acquisition to the production of publication-ready figures are covered and supported by user-friendly graphical user interfaces or corresponding command-line tools for the automation of the complete processing chain. To avoid black-box usage, a number of lower-level tools guarantee maximum flexibility in accessing and controlling processing results at any stage of the analysis

    Description: The Quaternary Fucino basin in the central Apennines of Italy was struck by one of the strongest Italian earthquakes of the last millennium (1915, Mw 7.0). The Avezzano town, ~ 9.0 km away from the epicentre, was completely destroyed. In the surrounding area sizable coseismic surface deformation were catalogued, attesting the severity of earthquake, the proximity to the causative fault and the geological and geomorphological complexity of a basin filled by thick lacustrine sediments. The Avezzano area provides a case study to understand how shallow subsurface geology influences site effects in a deep Quaternary continental basin environment, thus being of potential interest for similar geologic contexts worldwide. Within the investigated area, different possible earthquake-induced effects can occur, such as a) stratigraphic amplifications in a wide range of resonance frequencies (from 0.4 to 15–20 Hz); b) liquefaction; c) coseismic surface faulting; d) basin-edge effects; and e) slope instability. We present and discuss results of basic seismic microzonation study (SM) of the Avezzano area, focusing on geologic constraints aimed at the reconstruction of the shallow subsurface geology, and associated potential for local seismic hazard. We adopted an interdisciplinary approach based on detailed geological-structural, geophysical and seismic analyses to investigate the seismic response of high-seismic risk area, such as the Avezzano town, given the urban and industrial expansion since the last century. We discuss methodological approaches and their uncertainties.
