    Beschreibung: [1]  The Pacific Ocean is the largest water body on Earth and circulation in the Pacific contributed significantly to climate evolution in the latest Cretaceous, the culmination of a period of long-term cooling. Here, we present new high-resolution late Campanian to Maastrichtian benthic and planktic foraminiferal stable isotope data and a neodymium (Nd) isotope record obtained from sedimentary ferromanganese-oxide coatings of Ocean Drilling Program Hole 1210B from the tropical Pacific Ocean (Shatsky Rise). These new records resolve 13 million years in the latest Cretaceous providing insights into changes in surface- and bottom-water temperatures and source regions of deep- to intermediate-waters covering the carbon isotope excursions of the Campanian-Maastrichtian Boundary Event (CMBE) and the Mid-Maastrichtian Event (MME). Our new benthic foraminiferal δ 18 O and Nd isotope records together with published Nd isotope data show markedly parallel trends across the studied interval over a broad range of bathyal to abyssal water depths interpreted to reflect changes in the intensity of deep ocean circulation in the tropical Pacific. In particular, we observe a three-million-year-long period of cooler conditions in the early Maastrichtian (72.5 to 69.5 Ma) when a concomitant change toward less radiogenic seawater Nd isotope signatures probably marks a period of enhanced admixture and northward flow of deep waters with Southern Ocean provenance. We suggest this change to have been triggered by intensified formation and convection of deep waters in the high southern latitudes, a process that weakened during the MME (69.5 to 68.5 Ma). The early Maastrichtian cold interval is closely related to the negative and positive carbon isotope trends of the CMBE and MME. The millions-of-years long duration of these carbon cycle perturbations suggests a tectonic forcing of climatic cooling, possibly related to changes in ocean basin geometry and bathymetry.

    Beschreibung: For the C4 perennial grasses, Miscanthus  ×  giganteus and Panicum virgatum (switchgrass) to be successful for bioenergy production they must maintain high yields over the long term. Previous studies under the less conducive climate for productivity in N.W. Europe found little or no yield decline in M . ×  giganteus in the long term. This study provides the first analysis of whether yield decline occurs in M . ×  giganteus under United States. Midwest conditions in side-by-side trials with P. virgatum over 8–10 years at seven locations across Illinois. The effect of stand age was determined by using a linear regression model that included effects of weather. Miscanthus  ×  giganteus produced yields more than twice that of P. virgatum averaging 23.4 ± 1.2 Mg ha −1  yr −1 and 10.0 ± 0.9 Mg ha −1  yr −1 , respectively, averaged over 8–10 years. Relationships of yield with precipitation and growing degree days were established and used to estimate yields corrected for the stochastic effects of weather. Across all locations and in both species, yield initially increased until it reached a maximum during the fifth growing season and then declined to a stable, but lower level in the eighth. This pattern was more pronounced in M . ×  giganteus . The mean yields observed over this longer term period of 8–10 years were lower than the yields of the first 5 years. However, this decline was proportionately greater in M . ×  giganteus than in P. virgatum, suggesting a stronger effect of stand age on M . ×  giganteus . Based on the average yield over the period of this study, meeting the United States Renewable Fuel Standard mandate of 60 billion liters of cellulosic ethanol by 2022, would require 6.8 Mha of M . ×  giganteus or 15.8 Mha of P. virgatum . These appear manageable numbers for the United States, given the 16.0 Mha in the farmland Conservation Reserve Program in addition to another 13.0 Mha abandoned from agriculture in the last decade.

He was a scientific pioneer in the field of environmental chemistry and a great architect of the institutions that continue to serve and nurture this discipline.     Beschreibung: [1]  Atmospheric circulation in a Snowball Earth is critical for determining cloud behavior, heat export from the tropics, regions of bare ice, and sea glacier flow. These processes strongly affect Snowball Earth deglaciation and the ability of oases to support photosynthetic marine life throughout a Snowball Earth. Here we establish robust aspects of the Snowball Earth atmospheric circulation by running six general circulation models with consistent Snowball Earth boundary conditions. The models produce qualitatively similar patterns of atmospheric circulation and precipitation minus evaporation. The strength of the Snowball Hadley circulation is roughly double modern at low CO 2 and greatly increases as CO 2 is increased. We force a 1D axisymmetric sea glacier model with GCM output and show that, neglecting zonal asymmetry, sea glaciers would limit ice thickness variations to O (10%). Global mean ice thickness in the 1D sea glacier model is well-approximated by a 0D ice thickness model with global mean surface temperature as the upper boundary condition. We then show that a thin-ice Snowball solution is possible in the axysymmetric sea glacier model when forced by output from all the GCMs if we use ice optical properties that favor the thin-ice solution. Finally, we examine Snowball oases for life using analytical models forced by the GCM output and find that conditions become more favorable for oases as the Snowball warms, so that the most critical time for the survival of life would be near the beginning of a Snowball Earth episode.

    Beschreibung: ABSTRACT In the long run, the widespread use of slide scanners by pathologists requires an adaptation of teaching methods in histology and cytology in order to target these new possibilities of image processing and presentation via the internet. Accordingly, we were looking for a tool with the possibility to teach microscopic anatomy, histology, and cytology of tissue samples which would be able to combine image data from light and electron microscopes independently of microscope suppliers. With the example of a section through the villus of jejunum, we describe here how to process image data from light and electron microscopes in order to get one image-stack which allows a correlation of structures from the microscopic anatomic to the cytological level. With commercially available image-presentation software that we adapted to our needs, we present here a platform which allows for the presentation of this new but also of older material independently of microscope suppliers. Hydrogen stable isotope ratios of keratin (δ2HK) are increasingly used as endogenous markers to study animal movements, yet it is unclear what factors might influence δ2HK in free-ranging animals. We studied hydrogen stable isotope ratios of body water (δ2HBW) and fur keratin in 36 bat species (〉400 individuals) from a tropical forest assemblage to evaluate if δ2HBW and δ2HK are related to body size, trophic position, and movement ecology. We found a relatively large range of δ2HBW values (∼65‰) across bat species. Our phylogenetically controlled analysis showed that δ2HBW was not related to body size, trophic position, or movement ecology of species. The analysis also indicated that δ2HBW of primary consumers (i.e., fruit-eating bats) was similar to that of fruit juice, and δ2HBW of secondary consumers (i.e., animalivorous bats) was similar to that of surface water. Across bat species, δ2HK tended to decrease with increasing δ2HBW, suggesting that δ2HK is not directly linked to δ2HBW. We further tested whether δ2HK varied with a species' trophic position (measured as δ15N) and movement ecology (local or regional species). In syntopic bats, δ2HK ranged over 73‰, yet δ2HK was related neither to δ15N nor to the movement ecology of species. Fur keratin of secondary consumers was more enriched in 2H by 44‰ and in 15N by 3.7‰ compared with fur keratin of primary consumers. In an intraspecific analysis, we found that δ2HK of an insectivorous bat varied by 20‰ between colonies at 4 km distance. Within this species, δ2HK was not related to individual δ15N and body mass. Our data suggest that variation in δ2HK can be large in bats of tropical assemblages, both across species (range ∼70‰) and even within sedentary species (range ∼20‰), and that δ2HK is largely affected by the dietary habits of species.

    Beschreibung: [1]  There is ample evidence of both ancient and long-lasting fluvial activity and chemical alteration in the Libya Montes region south of Isidis Basin. The region hosts Noachian to Amazonian aged surface rocks with extensive outcrops of olivine- and pyroxene-bearing material. Libya Montes also features surface outcrops and/or deposits hosting Fe/Mg-smectite, Fe/Mg-smectite mixed with carbonate and/or other Fe/Mg-rich phyllosilicates, and Al-smectite. These units likely formed through chemical alteration connected with hydrothermal activity resulting from the formation of the Isidis Basin and/or the pervasive fluvial activity throughout this region. The morphology and stratigraphy of the aqueous and mafic minerals are described using High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment and High Resolution Stereo Camera derived digital terrain models. Analyses of the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars spectra show variations in the chemistry of the Fe/Mg-smectite from nontronite-like exposures with spectral features near 2.29 and 2.4 µm more consistent with Fe 3+ 2 OH groups in the mineral structure, and saponite-like outcrops with spectral features near 2.31 and 2.38 µm characteristic of Mg 2+ 3 OH groups. These Fe/Mg-smectite bearing materials also have bands near 1.9 µm due to H 2 O and near 2.5 µm that could be due to the smectite, other phyllosilicates, and carbonates. All regions exhibiting carbonate features near 3.4–3.5 µm also have features consistent with the presence of olivine and Fe/Mg-smectite, indicating that the carbonate signatures occur in rocks likely containing a mixture of these minerals. The Al-smectite-bearing rocks have bands near 1.41, 1.91, and 2.19 µm that are more consistent with beidellite than other Al-phyllosilicates, indicating a higher-temperature or diagenetically processed origin for this material. Our interpretation of the geologic history of this region is that ancient Noachian basaltic crustal materials experienced extensive aqueous alteration at the time of the Isidis impact, during which the montes were also formed, followed by emplacement of a rough olivine-rich lava or melt, and finally the smooth pyroxene-bearing caprock unit.

    Beschreibung: [1]  A major goal of understanding Neoproterozoic glaciations and determining their effect on the evolution of life and Earth's atmosphere is establishing whether and how much open ocean there was during them. Geological evidence tells us that continental ice sheets had to flow into the ocean near the equator during these glaciations. Here we drive the PISM ice sheet model with output from four simulations of the ECHAM5/MPI-OM atmosphere–ocean general circulation model with successively narrower open ocean regions. We find that extensive equatorial ice sheets form on marine margins if sea ice extends to within about 20 degrees latitude of the equator or less (Jormungand-like and hard Snowball states), but do not form if there is more open ocean than this. Given uncertainty in topographical reconstruction and ice sheet ablation parameterizations, we perform extensive sensitivity tests to confirm the robustness of our main conclusions.
