    Description: Determining factors that limit coseismic rupture is important to evaluate the hazard of powerful subduction zone earthquakes such as the 2011 Tohoku-Oki event (Mw=9.0). In 1960 (Mw=9.5) and 2010 (Mw=8.8) Chile was hit by such powerful earthquakes, the boundary of which was the site of a giant submarine slope failure with chaotic debris subducted to seismogenic zone depth. Here a continuous décollement is absent whereas away from the slope failure a continuous décollement is seismically imaged. We infer that underthrusting of inhomogeneous slide deposits prevents the development of a décollement, and thus the formation of a thin continuous slip zone necessary for earthquake rupture propagation. Thus coseismic rupture during the 1960 and 2010 earthquakes seems to be limited by underthrusted upper plate mass-wasting deposits. More generally our results suggest that upper plate dynamics and resulting surface processes can play a key role for determining rupture size of subduction zone earthquakes.     Description: Superoxide and other reactive oxygen species (ROS) originate from several natural sources and profoundly influence numerous elemental cycles, including carbon and trace metals. In the deep ocean, the permanent absence of light precludes currently known ROS sources, yet ROS production mysteriously occurs. Here, we show that taxonomically and ecologically diverse heterotrophic bacteria from aquatic and terrestrial environments are a vast, unrecognized, and light-independent source of superoxide, and perhaps other ROS derived from superoxide. Superoxide production by a model bacterium within the ubiquitous Roseobacter clade involves an extracellular oxidoreductase that is stimulated by the reduced form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH), suggesting a surprising homology with eukaryotic organisms.     Description: ABSTRACT A high-resolution coccolithophore study allowed reconstructing sea surface conditions during the last 24 ka BP off the Iberian Margin. Variations in nannoplankton accumulation rate, cold-water species, Florisphaera profunda , Umbilicosphaera sibogae and Coccolithus pelagicus ssp. azorinus trends suggest the occurrence of substantial changes in surface water dynamics. Palaeoproductivity shows changes during the glacial and the interglacial transition from intense glacial upwelling to persistent interglacial stratification. A drastic productivity decline occurred between ∼18 and 13 ka BP related to the arrival of subpolar waters indicated by the presence of the subarctic subspecies C. pelagicus pelagicus and increased percentages of tetra-unsaturated alkenones. Abrupt variability at core MD03-2699 during the last 24 ka BP was observed in palaeoproductivity and sea surface temperatures proxies. Increases of reworked species fluxes were observed during the Last Glacial Maximum and during the transition to the Holocene, likely connected to turbidity currents and/or contourites formed by Mediterranean outflow intensification. In addition, C. pelagicus ssp. pelagicus presence, Gephyrocapsa muellerae and tetra-alkenone percentages reveal rapid coolings coeval with the Holocene Bond cycles and rapid climate coolings recognized for the Northern Hemisphere between 11.02 and 1.7 ka BP and associated with subpolar water arrival at the site.     Description: [1]  We explore the impact of a latitudinal shift in the westerly wind belt over the Southern Ocean on the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) and on the carbon cycle for Last Glacial Maximum background conditions using a state-of-the-art ocean general circulation model. We find that a southward (northward) shift in the westerly winds leads to an intensification (weakening) of no more than 10% of the AMOC. This response of the ocean physics to shifting winds agrees with other studies starting from pre-industrial background climate, but the responsible processes are different. In our setup changes in AMOC seemed to be more pulled by upwelling in the south than pushed by down-welling in the north, opposite to what previous studies with different background climate are suggesting. The net effects of the changes in ocean circulation lead to a rise in atmospheric p CO 2 of less than 10 μ atm for both a northward and a southward shift in the winds. For northward shifted winds the zone of upwelling of carbon and nutrient rich waters in the Southern Ocean is expanded, leading to more CO 2 out-gassing to the atmosphere but also to an enhanced biological pump in the subpolar region. For southward shifted winds the upwelling region contracts around Antarctica leading to less nutrient export northwards and thus a weakening of the biological pump. These model results do not support the idea that shifts in the westerly wind belt play a dominant role in coupling atmospheric CO 2 rise and Antarctic temperature during deglaciation suggested by the ice core data.

    Description: We combined data sets of measured sedimentary calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) and satellite-derived pelagic primary production to parameterize the relation between CaCO 3 content on the Antarctic shelves and primary production in the overlying water column. CaCO 3 content predicted in this way was in good agreement with the measured data. The parameterization was then used to chart CaCO 3 content on the Antarctic shelves all around the Antarctic, using the satellite-derived primary production. The total inventory of CaCO 3 in the bioturbated layer of Antarctic shelf sediments was estimated to be 0.5 Pg C. This quantity is comparable to the total CO 2 uptake by the Southern Ocean in only one to a few years (dependent on the uptake estimate and area considered), indicating that the dissolution of these carbonates will neither delay ocean acidification in this area nor augment the Southern Ocean CO 2 uptake capacity.

    Description: Auto-antibodies against cardiac proteins have been described in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy. Antibodies against the C-terminal part of KChIP2 (anti-KChIP2 (C-12)) enhance cell death of rat cardiomyocytes. The underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Therefore, we wanted to explore the mechanisms responsible for anti-KChIP2-mediated cell death. Rat cardiomyocytes were treated with anti-KChIP2 (C-12). KChIP2 RNA and protein expressions, nuclear NF- κ B, mitochondrial membrane potential Δψm, caspase-3 and -9 activities, necrotic and apoptotic cells, total Ca 2+ and K + concentrations, and the effects on L-type Ca 2+ channels were quantified. Anti-KChIP2 (C-12) induced nuclear translocation of NF- κ B. Anti-KChIP2 (C-12)-treatment for two hours significantly reduced KChIP2 mRNA and protein expression. Anti-KChIP2 (C-12) induced nuclear translocation of NF- κ B after one hour. After six hours, Δψm and caspase-3 and -9 activities were not significantly changed. After 24 hours, anti-KChIP2 (C-12)-treated cells were 75 ± 3% necrotic, 2 ± 1% apoptotic, and 13 ± 2% viable. Eighty-six ± 1% of experimental buffer-treated cells were viable. Anti-KChIP2 (C-12) induced significant increases in total Ca 2+ (plus 11 ± 2%) and K + (plus 18 ± 2%) concentrations after five minutes. Anti-KChIP2 (C-12) resulted in an increased Ca 2+ influx through L-type Ca 2+ channels. In conclusion, our results suggest that anti-KChIP2 (C-12) enhances cell death of rat cardiomyocytes probably due to necrosis. J. Cell. Biochem. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
