    Description: Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death worldwide, with over one million cases annually. To identify genetic factors that modify disease risk, we conducted a genome-wide association study by analysing 317,139 single-nucleotide polymorphisms in 1,989 lung cancer cases and 2,625 controls from six central European countries. We identified a locus in chromosome region 15q25 that was strongly associated with lung cancer (P = 9 x 10(-10)). This locus was replicated in five separate lung cancer studies comprising an additional 2,513 lung cancer cases and 4,752 controls (P = 5 x 10(-20) overall), and it was found to account for 14% (attributable risk) of lung cancer cases. Statistically similar risks were observed irrespective of smoking status or propensity to smoke tobacco. The association region contains several genes, including three that encode nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunits (CHRNA5, CHRNA3 and CHRNB4). Such subunits are expressed in neurons and other tissues, in particular alveolar epithelial cells, pulmonary neuroendocrine cells and lung cancer cell lines, and they bind to N'-nitrosonornicotine and potential lung carcinogens. A non-synonymous variant of CHRNA5 that induces an amino acid substitution (D398N) at a highly conserved site in the second intracellular loop of the protein is among the markers with the strongest disease associations.     Description: Investigation of the human antibody response to influenza virus infection has been largely limited to serology, with relatively little analysis at the molecular level. The 1918 H1N1 influenza virus pandemic was the most severe of the modern era. Recent work has recovered the gene sequences of this unusual strain, so that the 1918 pandemic virus could be reconstituted to display its unique virulence phenotypes. However, little is known about adaptive immunity to this virus. We took advantage of the 1918 virus sequencing and the resultant production of recombinant 1918 haemagglutinin (HA) protein antigen to characterize at the clonal level neutralizing antibodies induced by natural exposure of survivors to the 1918 pandemic virus. Here we show that of the 32 individuals tested that were born in or before 1915, each showed seroreactivity with the 1918 virus, nearly 90 years after the pandemic. Seven of the eight donor samples tested had circulating B cells that secreted antibodies that bound the 1918 HA. We isolated B cells from subjects and generated five monoclonal antibodies that showed potent neutralizing activity against 1918 virus from three separate donors. These antibodies also cross-reacted with the genetically similar HA of a 1930 swine H1N1 influenza strain, but did not cross-react with HAs of more contemporary human influenza viruses. The antibody genes had an unusually high degree of somatic mutation. The antibodies bound to the 1918 HA protein with high affinity, had exceptional virus-neutralizing potency and protected mice from lethal infection. Isolation of viruses that escaped inhibition suggested that the antibodies recognize classical antigenic sites on the HA surface.     Description: The large majority of antibiotics currently used for treating infections and the antibiotic resistance genes acquired by human pathogens each have an environmental origin. Recent work indicates that the function of these elements in their environmental reservoirs may be very distinct from the "weapon-shield" role they play in clinical settings.     Description: Se estudia el ciclo estacional y la variabilidad de baja frecuencia en el Oceano Atlantico SO, analizando 15 anos (ene.1985-dic. 1999)de observaciones satelitales de temperatura superficial del mar (TSM). Los campos de la TSM tienen una resolucion temporal de 2 dias y espacial de 18km y fueron derivados de observaciones del sensor Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer de la National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA, EEUU). Se realizo un ajuste con una regresion de cuadrados minimos para los armonicos anual y semianual. Los ajustes para todos los puntos de grilla del area de estudio contabilizaron entre el 70. Y el 95 de la variabilidad de la TSM, dependiendo de la region. La amplitud estimada del ciclo estacional varia entre 5 degree C y 13.5 degree C, con TSM minima a mediados de agosto en el norte y mediados de septiembre en el sur, y TSM maxima en febrero. El armonico semi-anual tiene el efecto de atrasar la fecha de ocurrencia de la minima y maxima TSM anual estimada, principalmente en la parte mas austral del dominio. Para investigar la presencia de variabilidad sub-anual a inter-anual de la TSM, se computan los espectros para puntos del dominio representativos de las distintas caracteristicas hidrograficas de la region. El analisis de la tendencia revela aumentos de la TSM entre 0.2 y 0.8 degree C en los 15 anos sobre la plataforma continental, entre 0.3 y O.4 degree C en la Corriente de Malvinas y entre 0.1 y 0.6 degree C en la Corriente de Brasil. El maximo aumento de la TSM ( gt;0.7 degree ) se detecta en la Confluencia Brasil-Malvinas. Se observan disminuciones de la TSM solo en un sector al sur y al este de la Confluencia. El analisis revela tendencias positivas en todos los meses del ano excepto en enero y febrero, que muestran tendencia negativa, especialmente en la plataforma continental. Las zonas de los frentes de marea de Peninsula Valdes y Cabo Blanco presentan mayor tendencia de aumento de la TSM que las aguas circundantes. Finalmente, se estudia la presencia de variabilidad inter-anual a traves de correlaciones con el Indice de Oscilacion Sur en todo el dominio y a traves de la varianza de las series de la TSAM filtradas con un pasa-bajos con frecuencia de corte entre 13 y 14 meses.

    Description: El propósito de la investigación es evidenciar la influencia física del cambio climático global en la costa del Ecuador, procurando inferir escenarios más precisos a escala local, en cuanto a temperatura del mar, temperatura del aire y nivel medio del mar.
    Description: 27-years time series of oceanographic and meteorological data from stations located along the Ecuadorian coast were statistically analyzed in order to determine evidence of climatic change in Ecuador. Linear tendency analysis was applied to air surface temperature, sea surface temperature, and mean sea level. All the tendency lines of thermal parameters show a positive slope, suggesting the increase of the average patterns, however the mean sea level although has a negative slope during the period studied, in a long term series since 1950 seems to have a decadal behaviour that modulate the signal. The results of increasing temperatures are consisten with global estimations of environmental warming turning into clear evidence of climate change in the ecuadorian coast.

    Description: El objetivo de este artículo es documentar científicamente la evolución del evento "El Niño" en Ecuador, desde el punto de vista oceanográfico, sugiriendo posibles mecanismos involucrados en este proceso, vinculados a ondas interestacionales Kelvin en el océano (Kessler et al., 1995) que actúan como contraparte a las oscilaciones de 60 a 75 días en la atmósfera (Maden - Julian, 1995) y más específicamente de ondas encontradas en los espectros de nivel medio del mar y TSM en el mar ecuatoriano- colombiano con estas mismas características (Martínez, 1998).
