    Relationships between engineers and marketers within new product development: An Anglo-German comparison (2004)

    Notes: This paper presents a comparative study of the views of British and German engineers on the relationship between engineers and marketers and the conflict between them. Data have been collected from 151 British and 84 German engineers in 25 companies. Engineers who work in a variety of functions and at a number of different levels within an organisation are included. It has been found that the relationship is seen as being reasonable, with teamwork and increased knowledge of marketing by engineers both needed to make it function effectively. The engineers in both countries do not seek to dominate marketing, but they do feel that they need to obtain an understanding of management and of marketing. Conflict is not seen as being high in either country but German engineers perceive there to be lower levels of conflict between them and their marketing colleagues. German engineers see education and training differences as being the main reasons for conflict, whereas British engineers cite a lack of understanding between the two functions as the main reason. Engineers in both countries agree that better communications, more teamwork and more training are needed to improve the interface between the two functions. From this study, modifications to current theoretical frameworks can be seen and these are discussed.

    The influence of behavioural and organisational characteristics on the success of international strategic alliances (2004)

    Notes: With the current trend toward globalisation and the increasing competitive and technological challenges of today's environment the formation of international strategic alliances has become an important part of many firm's international business strategies. Experience with international strategic alliances has shown that they face a number of problems, which can often result in the termination of the alliance. This study, therefore, aims to assess the impact of both behavioural and organisational characteristics on the success of international strategic alliances. The results show that behavioural characteristics play a more significant role in explaining overall alliance performance compared to organisational characteristics. High levels of commitment, trust, coordination, interdependence and communication are found to be good predictors of international strategic alliance success. Conflict, meanwhile, is found to hamper good performance. By contrast organisational characteristics such as structure and control mechanisms are found not to strongly influence the success of international strategic alliances.

    Notes: In this paper, the effectiveness of a number of active devices for the control of shock waves on transonic aerofoils is investigated using numerical solutions of the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. A brief description of the flow model and the numerical method is presented including, in particular, the boundary condition modelling and the numerical treatment for surface mass transfer. Comparisons with experimental data have been made where possible to validate the numerical study before some systematic numerical simulations for a parametric study. The effects of surface suction, blowing, and local modification of the surface contour (bump) on aerofoil aerodynamic performance have been studied extensively regarding the control location, the mass flow strength and the bump height. The numerical simulations highlight the benefits and drawbacks of the various control devices for transonic aerodynamic performance and identify the key design parameters for optimisation.

    Notes: To understand the impact of earthquake experience and education on awareness, a survey was conducted with 1,065 high school first grade students from five prefectures of Japan. Results showed that earthquake experience is not the prime factor to enhance awareness. Education, when it is confined to school education, can provide useful information as the knowledge base for earthquake. However, in the gradual path of knowing, realizing, deepening, decision and action, family, community, and self education are found to be more prominent. While, self education is important for realizing and deepening, family and community education play the most vital role for decision and actions. In school education, more active ways of disaster education through conversation, experiencing, and visual aids are found to be more effective. It is believed that school education, coupled with self, family and community education can help a student to develop a "culture of disaster preparedness", which, in turn, will urge them to take right decisions and actions as an adult.

    Notes: This paper presents some of the findings to emerge from a qualitative study of social enterprise in the UK. The findings discussed in this paper refer to the marketing activities of social enterprises and consider the extent to which these can be described as "entrepreneurial". This discussion suggests that while social enterprises do engage in entrepreneurial marketing, the local embeddedness of their activities, their not-for-profit orientation and challenges posed by social exclusion impact on their marketing activities.

    Notes: A three-dimensional thermal finite element model including the effect of the powder-to-solid transition has been developed to investigate the transient temperature distribution and effects of substrate preheating during laser densification of dental powder bed for the layer-by-layer fabrication. The model encompasses the effects of the temperature- and porosity-dependent thermal conduction and radiation as well as the temperature-dependent natural convection. Substrate preheating is found to be important in preventing the formation of cracks in the dental porcelain body during laser densification. The simulation results are found to match the experiments very well.

    Notes: Applies service quality theory to facilities management (FM), resulting in a more customer-orientated approach to FM. Uses a questionnaire as the main source of data collection. Uses factor analysis to establish basic underlying concepts or dimensions. Proposes a "gap" model which makes a comparison between service quality and the level of importance that customers place on each service dimension. The implications are that FM managers can use service dimensions to measure the qualitative elements of FM service provision. Segmentation analysis allows FM managers to determine whether different service levels are required for customer segmentation groups. Allows the concepts and theories that are currently applied in the service quality literature to be applied in an FM context. This moves the debate about FM performance metrics more towards measuring and understanding customer perceptions and ultimately to customer management strategies.
