    Effect of no-tillage on turnover of organic matter in a Rhodic Ferralsol (2003)

    Notes: Abstract. Soil organic matter (SOM) is considered to be key to sustainability of agriculture in the tropics. In southern Brazil, no-tillage has been adopted widely to control soil erosion, but its impact on the dynamics of SOM is not well established. We measured soil carbon (C) and δ13C in two crop rotations, one of which contained C4 maize (Zea mays L.), after 21 years of contrasting tillage (conventional tillage versus no-tillage). Adjacent sites that reflected historic land-uses were also sampled. In the tillage experiment there was no effect of tillage on the total amount of C in the 0–40 cm profile (even when contrasting bulk density was accounted for), and the concentration of C differed only in the 0–5 cm and 5–10 cm layers. However, the occasional input of C4 material in the maize rotation resulted in a significant effect of rotation on δ13C (P 〈0.001). Using 13C as a tracer for the SOM formed since the start of the experiment, we estimated the abundance of ‘recent’ and ‘old’ C within each depth interval. We found the main effect of tillage was to increase the medium-term turnover of SOM, particularly in the subsoil (i.e. below 20 cm depth). Compared with no-tillage, there was almost five times more recent C in the subsoil, and 20% more recent C in the 0–40 cm profile as a whole.

    Notes: The generalized integral transform technique (GITT) is an hybrid numerical-analytical method that has been successfully applied in convection-diffusion problems, where the original potentials are replaced by eigenexpansion series, and the system of partial differential equations is transformed into a finite system of ordinary differential equations, allowing to obtain an error controlled solution without any kind of grid generation. This paper aims at the application of GITT to the transient version of the classical differentially heated square cavity problem, considering fluid properties as functions of temperature. Comparing results to some previously reported data for constant fluid properties validates the computational procedure. The solution for variable fluid properties with Boussinesq approximation is presented for several values of inclinations, at Rayleigh number of 103 and a Prandtl number of 0.71, demonstrating GITT capability of capturing circulating cells formation and evolution at a low Rayleigh number. New correlations for leaning angle and aspect ratio are presented.

    Notes: Sustainability of organizations is directly linked to the continual improvement of business performance. Many organizations have found a way to improve performance through the establishment of management systems. To maximise benefits of the system, it is necessary also to develop and implement a well-structured performance evaluation process to assist both the business and its interested parties achieve agreed objectives, in a sustainable way. This paper considers a new methodology for performance evaluation of management systems based on the concepts of the AS/NZS ISO 14031:2000, CSA PLUS 1144 and GEMI - measuring environmental performance. The methodology is being developed at a time when there is increasing interest in social issues, as one of the three constituent parts of sustainability (social, economic and environment). The material presented is derived in part from PhD studies of José Flávio Coelho.

    Notes: Studies on competitiveness in agri-food systems have been challenged by non-standard approaches. Traditional studies are defined as the ones based on comparative costs and market participation of countries or industries. Since comparative costs and market shares are distorted by subsidies, especially for agricultural products, traditional approaches show inconsistent results. Discusses competitiveness in a dynamic way, based on comparative capacity of agribusiness chain co-ordination. In order to study the competitive structure of the meat system in Brazil, this study followed the methodology adopted by Farina and Zylbersztajn, applied to different food systems. The traditional studies are based on methodologies that do not make clear the specific aspects of coordination as a source of competitive advantages. Aims at reinforcing the relation between coordination and competitiveness. The main conclusion is the need to create coordination devices to attend the demands in terms of quality, traceability, standardization and certification which are key elements to building dynamic capabilities to the insertion of the region on the global beef market.

    Notes: Abstract. The contribution of the QCD pomeron to the process $AA \rightarrow AA J/\Psi J/\Psi $ is discussed. We focus on the photon-photon collision, with the quasi-real photon coming from the Weizsäcker-Williams spectrum of the nuclei. We calculate the cross section for this process considering the solution of the LLA BFKL equation at zero momentum transfer using a small t approximation for the differential cross section of the subprocess. Furthermore, the impa ct of non-leading corrections to the BFKL equation is also analyzed. In both cases the cross section is found to increase with the energy, predicting considerable values for the LHC energies. Moreover, we compare our results with the Born two-gluon approximation, which is energy independent at the photon level. Our results indicate that the experimental analyses of this process can be useful to discriminate the QCD dynamics at high energies.

The heavy quark production in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions is investigated, with particular emphasis on the results from the coherent interactions given by the two-photon process. One addresses the heavy quark total cross sections at photon level considering the saturation model and the BFKL dynamics in the color dipole picture. The corresponding cross sections at nuclear level are presented. It is verified that the QCD dynamics implies an enhancement of the cross section in comparison with previous calculations.

    Notes: Abstract. The double-meson production in ultraperipheral heavy-ions collisions is addressed, focusing on the particular case of $\rho J/\Psi$ from two-photon reactions. The cross section at photon level is obtained using distinct parameterizations for the gluon distribution on the light meson. The resulting estimates for the nuclear case are presented and discussed. As a by-product, we estimate the double $\rho$ production cross section using the pomeron-exchange factorization relations.
