    Description: Compelling evidences indicate a key role for regulatory T cells (Tregs) on the host response to cancer and recent studies indicated that the generation of effective WT1-specific cytotoxic T cells can be largely affected by the presence of Tregs. This is the first study to describe human Tregs generated specifically against the WT1 antigen which is overexpressed in several human leukemias and provide the mechanism by which these anti-WT1 Tregs inhibit the immune response in leukemia patients. We have generated T cell lines and clones that specifically recognized a WT1-84 peptide in an HLA DRB1*0402/TCR-Vb8-restricted manner. Importantly, they recognized HLADRB1* 04-matched fresh leukemic cells expressing the WT1 antigen. These clones exerted a Th2 cytokine profile, had a CD4+CD25+Foxp3+GITR+CD127− Tregs phenotype, and significantly inhibited the proliferative activity of allogeneic T cells independently of cell-contact. Priming of allo-reactive T cells in the presence of Tregs strongly inhibited the expansion of NK; NK-T and CD8+ T cells, had an inhibitory effect on NK/NK-T cytotoxic activity but not on CD8+ T cells. Furthermore, priming of T cells with the WT1- 126 HLA-A0201-restricted peptide in the presence of Tregs strongly inhibited the induction of anti-WT1-126 CD8+ CTL responses as evidenced by both very low cytotoxic activity and IFN-g production. Moreover, these Tregs clones specifically produced Granzyme-B and selectively induced apoptosis in WT1-84 pulsed-autologous APCs but not in apoptoticresistant DR4-matched leukemic cells. Importantly, we have also detected anti-WT1-84 IL-5+/Granzyme-B+/Foxp3+ CD4+ Tregs in 5 out of 8 HLA-DR4+ AML patients. These findings suggest a critical role for anti-WT1 Tregs in the inhibition of T cell responses against leukemia. This study may have important implications for the clinical manipulation of Tregs such as immuno-targeting of TCR-Vb-8 with mAbs to eliminate anti-WT1 Tregs in leukemia patients in order to enhance GVL before vaccination with the WT1 antigen. On the other hand, leukemia patients with GVHD should be clinically-tried for vaccination with the current WT1-84 peptide or adoptively-treated with ex-vivo anti-WT1 Treg cells to specifically enhance their frequency, which is known to be very low in these patients.

    Notes: A numerical investigation aimed at understanding the flow and heat transfer characteristics of pulsating turbulent flow in an abrupt pipe expansion was carried out. The flow patterns are classified by four parameters; the Reynolds number, the Prandtl number, the abrupt expansion ratio and the pulsation frequency. The influence of these parameters on the flow was studied in the range 104〈Re〈5×104, 0.7〈Pr〈7.0, 0.2〈d/D〈0.6 and 5〈f〈35. It was found that the influence of pulsation on the mean time-averaged Nusselt number is insignificant (around 10 per cent increase) for fluids having a Prandtl number less than unity. This effect is appreciable (around 30 per cent increase) for fluids having Prandtl number greater than unity. For all pulsation frequencies, the variation in the mean time-averaged Nusselt number, maximum Nusselt number and its location with Reynolds number and diameter ratio exhibit similar characteristics to steady flows.

    Notes: A disaster and a crisis are two different, and related events. The two terms are sometimes used interchangeably. Man-made disaster that occurs at an industrial organization, may develop into an industrial crisis. Crisis can happen to any organization. It has been noted that there were no universally accepted definitions yet developed for disaster and crisis. There is also no universally available criteria, to define the disaster in terms of the consequences, such as the casualties and the cost of damage. This paper reviews the definitions, types, characteristics, criteria and models of disaster and crisis. Also the types of crisis were rearranged and the differences between the disasters and crises have been summarized.

    Notes: Major hazard installations (MHIs) are dealing with hazardous substances which exceed the threshold quantity. MHIs are characterized by tight coupling and high complexity. Due to their complexity, MHIs require well trained managers who have good experience at all levels to manage the operations successfully. The managements of major hazard installations play a vital role in the success or failure of their installation. The world has witnessed many incidents in major hazard installations due to failure of the management at all levels. This paper summarizes in brief the management errors for several incidents which occurred worldwide. Also, the paper reviews the management errors which led to an incident at a petrochemical plant in East Malaysia.

    Notes: Environmental problems are caused directly or indirectly by the patterns of production by industries, patterns of consumption and behavior of the consumers. The shaping of attitude and values, commitment and skills needed to preserve and protect the environment begins at an early age. Hence educators play an influential role in developing new patterns of behaviors for individuals. Accordingly, aims to determine the level of knowledge, environmental concern and ecologically conscious consumer behavior and identify the extent of involvement in nature-related activities of school teachers. Also investigates the relationships between these variables. The subjects were 285 school teachers who were randomly selected from ten regular government schools in the state of Selangor, Malaysia. A survey was conducted using drop and collect method. The data illustrated the presence of high level of environmental concern among the teachers. The environmental knowledge was fair but generally poor in understanding of the underlying causes of environmental problems. The practices of environmentally responsible behavior were not in concert with the level of concern and knowledge. The respondents were not actively involved in nature-related activities. Proposes ways of enhancing the ecological awareness and responsibilities of the teachers.

    Notes: The possible correlation between cytomegalovirus, human herpesvirus types 6, 7 and cytomegalovirus-related clinical symptoms was studied in kidney transplant patients in Kuwait. Cytomegalovirus infection was diagnosed using the pp65 antigenemia assay. DNA of cytomegalovirus was detected by nested polymerase chain reaction (nested-PCR). PCR was also used to amplify the genes coding for structural proteins of human herpesvirus-6 (240 bp) and human herpesvirus-7 (186 bp). Glycoprotein B genotypes of cytomegalovirus were determined by restriction fragment length polymorphism. The average number of cells positive for cytomegalovirus pp65 antigen showed a steady increase with the severity of the cytomegalovirus-related symptoms. Furthermore, cytomegalovirus pp65 antigen positivity was significantly more frequent among recipients of cadaver kidney (45.5%) than among those who received live related kidneys (22.6%). Cytomegalovirus gB genotype 1 was detected more frequently (P〈0.036) in recipients with live related donor kidney (38%) than in patients of cadaver kidney (13%). The genome of human herpesvirus-6 was detected at the same rate in patients with or without cytomegalovirus-related symptoms. However, the genome of human herpesvirus-7 was detected significantly more frequently (P〈0.0001) in asymptomatic patients (41.7%) than in recipients with symptomatic cytomegalovirus infection (17%). We conclude that cytomegalovirus gB genotypes are not associated with the outcome of a cytomegalovirus infection in kidney transplant patients, that human herpesvirus-6 does not play a role in cytomegalovirus pathogenesis and that the role of human herpesvirus-7 in cytomegalovirus-related morbidity in kidney recipients remains unclear.

    Notes: The sustainable world’s economic growth and people’s life improvement greatly dependon the use of alternative products in the architecture and construction, such as industrial wastesconventionally called “green materials”. This paper concerns the main results of an experimentalwork carried out with the objective of developing new composite materials based on gypsum andincorporating waste material as granulated cork, a by-product of cork industry, and cellulose fibres,a waste of paper industry. Such materials are intended to be used as composite boards for nonstructural elements of construction, such as dry walls and ceiling. Cork (bark of the plant QuercusSuber L), a substance largely produced in Portugal, is a material whose characteristics are ofconsiderable interest for the construction industry. It is regarded as a strategic material withenormous potential by its reduced density, elasticity, compressibility, waterproof, vibrationabsorption, thermal and acoustic insulation efficiency [1]. During the first stage of this researchwork the gypsum binder and its properties were studied. Then, composites with mineral additions(added to increase the waterproofing and resistance) were also developed and submitted to tests todetermine their physical and mechanical properties. In last stage, reinforced composites usingdifferent industrial by-products have been developed. This paper will present the properties and themanufacture methods used to produce the above mentioned eco-friendly composites that can easeways for using industrial wastes as new construction materials, with excellent inherent thermal andacoustic properties

    Description: El-Mex Bay receives a heavy load of waste waters (7×109 m3/year) both directly from industrial outfalls and indirectly from Lake Maryuit via El-Mex Pumping Station. Zooplankton samples were collected bimonthly from seven stations during the period March 2005 to January 2006 to illustrate the influence of salinity variations on the abundance and community structure of zooplankton in El-Mex Bay waters. Based on the salinity values, four water types are identified: the mixed land drainage (L) of salinity 〈 10ppt, mixed water (M) of salinity range 10 to 30ppt, diluted sea water (D) of salinity range 30 to 38.5 ppt and Mediterranean Sea water (S) of salinity 〉 38.5. The highest zooplankton standing crop (106.6×103 ind/m3) was recorded in the mixed land drainage water type (L); while the lowest counts (5.9×103 ind/m3) was found in the Mediterranean Sea water type (S). Rotifera were the most dominant zooplankton groups in water type (L) constituting about 86% to the total zooplankton and represented by 19 species belonging to 10 genera. Brachionus urceolaris and Filinia longiseta dominate Rotifera population. Protozoa was the second important group in this water type contributing 9.23% to the total zooplankton crop. In water type (M), Rotifera, Protozoa and Copepoda were the most dominant groups constituting 57.87%, 21.32% and 13.45% to the total zooplankton counts respectively. In water type (D), Copepoda and their larval stages were the most dominant zooplankton groups constituting about 51% to the total zooplankton. Protozoa was the second important group constituting 37.20%, while Rotifera represented only 4.20%. In the Mediterranean water type (S), Copepoda and their larvae were the most dominant zooplankton group, forming 49.46% of the total zooplankton. Oithona nana, Acartia clausi and Paracalanus parvus dominated copepod population. Cirriped larvae occupied the second order of abundance at this water type with a percentage frequency of 19.17% to the total zooplankton crop.
