Notes: The effects of thermal stress on the electrical characteristics of metal–oxide–semiconductor diodes with oxides in an ultrathin regime were studied. By centering a quartz ring as a heat sink beneath the silicon wafer, the introduced temperature gradient results in a corresponding hat-like shape thickness distribution for an oxide grown on the wafer with a rapid thermal processing system. The enhanced exterior tensile and compressive thermal stresses due to introduced temperature gradient make the oxides exhibit less and more substrate injection saturation current Jsat, respectively, in comparison to control oxides. Their flatband voltage VFB data also clearly show the dependency of effective charge number density Neff on exterior thermal stress. A stress distribution model is proposed to explain the observation. Co-60 irradiation was also performed on the stressed samples to observe this stress extent by examining the variation of electrical characteristics. It was found that an oxide grown on a wafer in exterior compression exhibited better radiation hardness than one in tension. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We derive a simple kinetic theory for collisional flows of identical, slightly frictional, nearly elastic spheres that is based on a physically realistic model for a frictional collision between two spheres. When the coefficient of friction is small, the equations of balance for rotational momentum and energy can be solved in approximation. This permits the rotational temperature to be related to the translation temperature and the introduction of an effective coefficient of restitution in the rate of dissipation of translation fluctuation energy. With this incorporation of the additional loss of translational energy to friction and the rotational degrees of freedom, the structure of the resulting theory is the same as for frictionless spheres. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In the literature, the beneficial result of immigration to the host country relies on the assumption of perfect competition in the goods market. However, for an economy characterized by imperfect competition, immigration of unskilled workers can be welfare-reducing. The entry of skilled workers is nevertheless welfare-enhancing under a plausible factor-intensity condition.

Notes: We have investigated the luminescence phenomena from stress-activated ZrO2:Ti. The luminescence is clearly visible to the naked eye in the atmosphere. The luminescence center has been identified as the Ti4+ ion from spectra of the mechanoluminescence and also from photoluminescence studies of ZrO2:Ti. The mechanoluminescence intensity decreases on repetitive application of stress but recovers completely on irradiation with ultraviolet light. ZrO2 is an n-type semiconductor and has electron traps. It is suggested that the mechanoluminescence mechanism arises from the movement of dislocations and recombination between electrons and holes released from these traps which are associated with the Ti4+ centers. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: When examining the tariff-jumping effect, the literature emphasizes the cost-induced effect, which states that a foreign firm has an incentive to jump over the tariff wall in order to locate in a foreign territory, and thereby escape tariffs. The authors set up a location model to show what they refer to as the location-induced effect on tariff-jumping. This location-induced effect, together with the traditional cost-induced effect, makes tariff-jumping more (less) likely to take place when the production function in question exhibits decreasing (increasing) returns to scale.

Notes: Using a fast tree-searching algorithm and a Pentium cluster, we enumerated all the sequences and compact conformations (structures) for a protein folding model on a cubic lattice of size 4×3×3. We used two types of amino acids—hydrophobic (H) and polar (P)—to make up the sequences, so there were 236(approximate)6.87×1010 different sequences. The total number of distinct structures was 84 731 192. We made use of a simple solvation model in which the energy of a sequence folded into a structure is minus the number of hydrophobic amino acids in the "core" of the structure. For every sequence, we found its ground state or ground states, i.e., the structure or structures for which its energy is lowest. About 0.3% of the sequences have a unique ground state. The number of structures that are unique ground states of at least one sequence is 2 662 050, about 3% of the total number of structures. However, these "designable" structures differ drastically in their designability, defined as the number of sequences whose unique ground state is that structure. To understand this variation in designability, we studied the distribution of structures in a high dimensional space in which each structure is represented by a string of 1's and 0's, denoting core and surface sites, respectively. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: For an enterprise striving to implement total quality management (TQM), customer satisfaction (CS) is an important objective to achieve. The success of CS is not only closely related to a company's TQM performance but it also has permanent effects on the company's future. However, many corporations still fail to implement CS due to lack of experience, or not being able to keep up with the continuous implementation of CS. This study takes a look at one large Taiwanese multi-product manufacturing company with nine years of CS implementation experience. The implementation steps developed over nine years of CS implementation would be used as the foundation in building the CS implementation framework so that the possibility of actual performance failure would be minimized.
