Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: The weathering of historical buildings and, indeed, of monuments and sculptures of natural stone is a problem that has been encountered for hundreds of years. However, a dramatic increase in deterioration in the structure of our built heritage has been observed during the past century. To understand the complex interaction that the stone in a building suffers with its near environment (the building) and the macro environment (the local climate and atmospheric conditions) requires an interdisciplinary approach and the application of many different theoretical, experimental and empirical resources provided by the geosciences, chemistry, material sciences, biology and construction engineers. The protection of our architectural heritage has both cultural and historical importance, as well as substantial economic and ecological value. Large sums of money are being spent world-wide on measures for the preservation of monuments and historical buildings. Optimization of damage analysis procedures and damage process controls, as well as the development of monitoring and early warning systems for damage prevention, is needed. The past several decades has seen an unprecedented level of research activity in this area, the results of which are often difficult to access. This volume is intended to provide an integrated approach to the study of the deterioration of geomaterials, making the research available to a wide international audience. Natural Stone, Weathering Phenomena, Conservation Strategies and Case Studies comprises thirty chapters divided into six sections: weathering of natural building stones; weathering processes; fabric dependence of physical properties; biodeterioration; quality assessment and conservation of stones; and environmental conditions. Review articles are combined with reports on recent progress in the various research fields, authored by a comprehensive team of international contributors. The volume will be of interest to all those involved in the protection of our built heritage, particularly geoscientists, material scientists, construction engineers, architects and stone conservators.

Notizen: Distribution patterns of benthic foraminiferal faunas from ODP Leg 170 Sites 1041 and 1042 show that the Costa Rican convergent margin subsided from coastal to abyssal depth from Middle Miocene to Present. This favours the model of a margin undergoing active subduction erosion. We propose that subduction erosion leads to the removal of material from the base of the forearc wedge and, as a consequence, to progressive subsidence of the forearc. A mean subsidence rate is estimated to be approximately 0.4 mm yr−1.

Notizen: A digital image tracking algorithm based on Fourier-transform cross-correlation has been developed to correct for instrumental drift in scanning tunneling microscope images. A technique was developed to eliminate cumulative tracking errors associated with fractional pixel drift. This tracking algorithm was used to monitor conductance changes associated with different conformations in conjugated molecular switch molecules and to trace the diffusion of individual benzene molecules on Ag{110}. Molecular motions have been tracked for up to 25 h (400 images) of acquisition time. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Bactericidal/permeability-increasing protein (BPI) of neutrophils is a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-binding antibacterial protein with specificity for Gramnegative bacteria. BPI binding to the bacterial surface rapidly triggers potentially reversible bacterial growth inhibition and alterations of the outer membrane and, later, disruption of the inner membrane and lethal injury. Initial effects include selective OmpR-dependent changes in the synthesis of outer membrane porins (OmpF and OmpC). Because OmpR is a global transcriptional regulator, we have examined its possible role in responses of E. coli to sublethal injury caused by BPI. Early (〈15 min) reversible effects of BPI on bacterial colony-forming ability and outer membrane permeability were virtually identical in isogenic wild-type (wt) and ompR−E. coli. Both strains could repair the outer membrane permeability barrier after Mg2+-induced displacement of bound BPI. However, OmpR was essential for the ability of E. coli to tolerate low doses of BPI and escape the progression of sublethal to lethal damage. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that BPI treatment produced greater membrane perturbations in the ompR− strain, apparent even before lethal injury. These findings suggest that the fate of E. coli exposed to BPI depends on both OmpR-independent mechanisms engaged in outer membrane repair and OmpR- dependent processes that modulate porin synthesis and retard progression of injury from the outer to the inner membrane.

Notizen: Common carp Cyprinus carpio (n=24) from the upper Danube (wild or feral forms, scaleless varieties) as well as Japanese koi shared the identical mtDNA haplotype (565 bp). In contrast, Amur River carp (n=5) exhibited unique haplotypes, 1–12 bp divergent from the Danubian one. These results support an Asian origin and single introduction or domestication event leading to the present diversity of common carp in Europe, as well as the ornamental Japanese koi.

Notizen: The acrylamide gelification process is a fast, inexpensive, reproducible, and easily scaled up chemical method for obtaining nanopowders of BaZrO3 that can be used for sintering crucibles and many electronic applications. This method enables the production of 100 g of high-purity powders in one run, using simple laboratory equipment and low-cost raw materials. The gelification process, synthesis temperature, and gas conditions required for obtaining high-quality powders were the subjects of the present study. Fine powders were sintered to full density at 1450°C, making the fabrication of BaZrO3 crucibles possible for many laboratories.

Notizen: . The microsporidial genus, Brachiola, contains three species: the type species Brachiola vesicularum (identified from an AIDS patient) and two species transferred from the genus Nosema, becoming Brachiola connori and Brachiola algerae. A developmental feature of the genus Brachiola is the “thickened” plasmalemma from sporoplasm through sporoblast stage. The sporoplasm has been reported to have a thick plasmalemma at 1-h postextrusion. The purpose of this investigation was to observe B. algerae spores before, during and after germination to determine if the plasmalemma is thick at the point of extrusion and if not, when and how it forms. New understandings regarding the polar filament position inside the spore, places it outside the sporoplasm proper with the sporoplasm limiting membrane imaginations surrounding it. These invaginations, present a possible location for aquaporins. The multilayered interlaced network (MIN), a new organelle (possibly of Golgi origin from the sporoblast), was observed inside the spore and sporoplasm; it formed an attachment to the end of the extruded polar tube and contributed to the thickening of the sporoplasm plasmalemma. A thin “unit limiting membrane”, present on the sporoplasm at the time of extrusion, is connected to the MIN by many cross-connections forming the “thick blistered” surface by 30 min-postextrusion.
