Notes:   We argue that Rugman and Verbeke (2002) underestimate the importance of Penrose's (1959) contributions to the modern resource-based view of the firm. In particular, we take issue with Rugman and Verbeke's (2002) arguments concerning Penrose's (1959) contributions to our knowledge of: (1) the creation of competitive advantage, (2) sustaining competitive advantage, (3) isolating mechanisms, and (4) competitive advantage and economic rents. In our response, we show that Penrose (1959) has both directly and indirectly influenced the modern resource-based view of strategic management.

Notes: The use of futures contracts as a hedging instrument has been the focus of much research. At the theoretical level, an optimal hedge strategy is traditionally based on the expected–utility maximization paradigm. A simplification of this paradigm leads to the minimum–variance criterion. Although this paradigm is quite well accepted, alternative approaches have been sought. At the empirical level, research on futures hedging has benefited from the recent developments in the econometrics literature. Much research has been done on improving the estimation of the optimal hedge ratio. As more is known about the statistical properties of financial time series, more sophisticated estimation methods are proposed. In this survey we review some recent developments in futures hedging. We delineate the theoretical underpinning of various methods and discuss the econometric implementation of the methods.

Notes: This work explores the efficacy of using students as surrogates for experienced managers in escalation studies. Participants were 222 managers with substantial project planning and evaluation experience and 146 undergraduate business students. Our results show that the experienced managers exhibited a strong tendency to continue projects, with this tendency being positively related to the degree of project completion. The managers also tended to invest a greater amount of additional resources in response to favourable rather than to unfavourable information, contingent on the degree of project completion. In contrast, the students’ decisions showed little sensitivity to the contextual information, and they exhibited no association between the likelihood they would continue a project and how much funding they would allocate to the project. These results suggest that caution is needed in generalizing student-based escalation findings to real-world business settings.

Notes: Global procurement of service activities has received an increasing amount of managerial attention in recent years. Service firms seem to have begun sourcing part of their service activities from abroad in much the same way as manufacturing firms have sourced components and finished goods in the past 30 years. However, little is known about the nature of service global sourcing strategy. In this study, we examine the differences in the characteristics of core service activities provided by service firms that market pure service activities versus those service firms that market service activities which involve tangible goods, and the extent to which both types of service firms engage in internal and foreign sourcing of core service activities before the service activities are provided to their customers. The results show, among others, that the level of inseparability of core service activities performed and/or sourced by "pure" service firms is significantly higher than that of "non-pure" service firms and that "non-pure" service firms consider foreign sourcing drivers as much more important factors in influencing the decisions in selecting potential suppliers for core service activities. Managerial and theoretical implications are explored.

Notes: The ultimate goal of streamlining solutions for project management is to optimize the performance of the team. Automating business processes and integrating customized business solutions can not only increase productivity but also profitability. However, very few project- or service-oriented organizations efficiently manage their processes. The authors describe an easily replicable online process that resulted in improved management and efficiency for one company.

Notes: There is an increasing need of a model for the process-based performance measurement of multispecialty tertiary care hospitals for quality improvement. Analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is utilized in this study to evolve such a model. Each step in the model was derived by group-discussions and brainstorming sessions among experienced clinicians and managers. This tool was applied to two tertiary care teaching hospitals in Barbados and India. The model enabled identification of specific areas where neither hospital performed very well, and helped to suggest recommendations to improve those areas. AHP is recommended as a valuable tool to measure the process-based performance of multispecialty tertiary care hospitals.

Notes: While a large number of consumers in the US and Europe frequently shop on the Internet, research on what drives consumers to shop online has typically been fragmented. This paper therefore proposes a framework to increase researchers' understanding of consumers' attitudes toward online shopping and their intention to shop on the Internet. The framework uses the constructs of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) as a basis, extended by exogenous factors and applies it to the online shopping context. The review shows that attitudes toward online shopping and intention to shop online are not only affected by ease of use, usefulness, and enjoyment, but also by exogenous factors like consumer traits, situational factors, product characteristics, previous online shopping experiences, and trust in online shopping.

Notes: Prolonged periods of ineffective capital allocation and mismanagement destroy massive amounts of wealth and damage the economic wellbeing of the service and manufacturing industries. The purpose of this paper is to outlay the facts and figures that can illustrate the value destruction in the US airline industry for the period of 1990-1999. The EVA analysis for the last decade of the millennium demonstrated that even when the US economy was prosperous, the airline industry failed to benefit from this favorable environment.

Notes: The controls on payments by insurance companies and governmental agencies (Medicare, Medicaid, Title 19) to hospitals have led to restricted hospital services for patients. This situation has caused overcapacity in hospitals. Also, there is a surplus of both hospital capacity and doctors. However, there are frequent shortages of nurses and many other trained technical personnel. This situation has behavioral implications which are discussed in this paper.

Notes: There has been a lot of discussion and controversy surrounding the issue of corporate leadership, the value of the company and the level of executive remuneration. Clearly, there has been great discontent over expectations versus delivered results. The core aim of this article is a targeted examination of the board of directors and corporate strategy with its hit-or-miss approach. It is a look at corporate governance and its key stakeholders and what it can mean in the risk management context. The latest International Accounting Standards and the new Basel II banking regulations are examined in passing. This is a review of the haphazard progress in corporate governance and an explanation of some suggestions for risk analysis and management control mechanisms.
