    Notes: From 1987 to 1996, the nutritional quality of the main botanical components (grasses, legumes and forbs) in semi-arid grasslands in the dehesa ecosystem in western Spain was analysed. Herbage samples were collected at the end of spring, in 30 locations, at two different topographic positions (upper and lower slope zones). Herbage mass over 2 cm and proportion of botanical components were estimated and samples were analysed for crude protein, neutral-detergent fibre (NDF), hemicellulose, cellulose, lignin and in vitro dry matter digestibility (DMD). Analysis of variance revealed a significant effect of sampling year on the herbage mass, proportion of botanical components and their nutritional quality. The three botanical groups, grasses, legumes and forbs, followed similar year-to-year trends in their crude protein, cellulose and lignin contents and in vitro DMD. Herbage mass was not significantly related to any meteorological variables, suggesting that interannual variation in biomass production of botanically complex pastures cannot be explained by a single factor. However, annual precipitation was significantly related to the proportion of the botanical group that was dominant at each slope zone: grasses in the lower zone and forbs in the upper zone. In the upper zone, spring precipitation explained part of the interannual variation in the NDF, cellulose, lignin contents and in vitro DMD of the botanical components.

    Notes: Recent results concerning the giant magneto-impedance effect, GMI, in magnetic microwires having diameter in the range of a few micrometers and heterogeneous character are introduced in this work. Two types of microwires have been studied, namely, (i) magnetic microwires covered by insulating Pyrex glass coating and (ii) copper wires covered by electrodeposited magnetic microtubes. The magnetic anisotropy distribution in each type of microwire is correlated with giant magneto-impedance. While the main source of anisotropy in glass coated microwires is of magnetoelastic origin created by the stresses induced during quenching and by the coating, in the case of the microtubes the origin is the columnar growth during the electrodeposition. The influence on GMI of various treatments that modify the anisotropy is analyzed. Heterogeneous microwires with different thicknesses of insulating coating and of magnetic tube are analyzed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The localization of the L-like conduction states is found to change from the islands to the substrate in InAs quantum dots grown on GaAs as the island-size decreases. This is due to a size-induced modification of the strain state of the islands. The critical size should correspond to dislocation formation. As a result, small InAs islands coherently strained to GaAs exhibit optical properties markedly different from those of bulk InAs. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: From a coupling model between the Boltzmann transport equation and the quantum Liouville equation, we have developed a simulator based on the Wigner distribution function (WDF) approach that can be applied to resonant tunneling diodes (RTDs) and other vertical transport quantum devices. In comparison to previous WDF simulators, the tool allows one to extend the simulation domains up to hundreds of nanometers, which are the typical dimensions required for the study of actual multilayer structures. With these improvements, a level of agreement between theory and experiment comparable to that obtained by using other simulators based on Green functions has been achieved. The results of this work reveal that the WDF formalism can be alternatively used to study the behavior of actual multilayered RTDs. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have studied the influence of InP buffer-layer morphology in the formation of InAs nanostructures grown on InP(001) substrates by solid-source molecular-beam epitaxy. Our results demonstrate that when InP buffer layers are grown by atomic-layer molecular-beam epitaxy, InAs quantum dot-like structures are formed, whereas InP buffer layers grown by MBE produce quantum-wire-like structures. The optical properties of these corrugated structures make them potential candidates for their use in light-emitting devices at 1.55 μm. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In-plane optical anisotropies of (001)-oriented InAs/InP self-assembled quantum wires and dots structures are studied by means of photoreflectance in the spectral region of the E1 transition of bulk InAs. The energy position of the transition observed in the quantum wires depends on the light polarization; quantum dots do not exhibit, in contrast, such an optical anisotropy. This anisotropy is attributed to the splitting of the four-fold degenerate E1 transition produced by the strong triaxial behavior of the strain that appears in wires and not in dots. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The survival of milkfish broodstock (body weight range 1–11 kg) was determined until 30 days after handling and transport in open tanks or in sealed oxygenated bags containing chilled sea water (20–25 °C). Maintenance of cool sea water was achieved by the gradual addition of ice chunks or frozen gel packs. A survival rate of 50% after transporting fish at a loading density of 45 kg m−3 for 4 h in open tanks was not significantly different from those that were handled but not transported (86%). Similarly, survival rates (67–83%) among broodstock confined for 8 h in chilled sea water at 40 and 60 kg m−3 were not significantly different from each other or from a group not subjected to confinement. Nevertheless, low dissolved oxygen (DO) and accumulation of total ammonia–nitrogen beginning 1 h after transport and confinement may be responsible for low survival rates of milkfish in open tanks. In contrast, all milkfish survived 10 h of overland transport in sealed bags with chilled and diluted (28 g L−1) sea water. Likewise, all milkfish survived after being bagged and immediately transferred to a communal rearing tank, or bagged and placed in a styrofoam box for 10 h. Except for total ammonia–nitrogen levels, which increased slightly (0.7–0.8 mg L−1) above background, seawater temperature (20–24 °C), salinity (28 g L−1) and DO (6 to 〉 20 mg mL−1) titres in transport bags were maintained during the 10-h test. The effectiveness of handling and transporting milkfish broodstock in sealed bags containing chilled sea water was verified in actual field trials. Spawning of sexually mature milkfish subjected to these stressors was not impaired. These results demonstrate that mortalities of large milkfish broodstock can be minimized when fish are handled and transported in sealed oxygenated bags containing chilled sea water.

    Notes: Thigh meat (raw and cooked) was analyzed for oxysterols, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx) activity in order to assess oxidative stability. The results showed that no beneficial effect was obtained by the removal of iron and copper from the animal diet. On the contrary, the oxysterol production, the TBARS, and the GSHPx activity tended to indicate a higher oxidative stress in cooked meat from the chickens deprived of iron and copper. This effect could not be explained by differences in tissue α-tocopherol levels. Finally, correlation analyses showed that the 4 parameters studied (oxysterols, TBARS, GSHPx, α-tocopherol) were interrelated.

    Notes: The active participation of all personnel is the basis for continuous improvement in companies. This paper describes the main features of systems for channelling such participation, used in a series of companies in the automotive parts industry in the Northwest of Spain. These characteristics were obtained from research carried out in mid-1997 and based on personal interviews. Likewise, the great spread of this kind of practice found in this supply industry, mainly made up of SMEs, supports the idea that it is not only applicable in large companies. However, it should not be forgotten that the automotive sector has one of the longest traditions in continuous improvement and employee involvement activities.
