Notes: Abstract The 4-(p-methoxyphenyl)-3,5-bis(4-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazole has been synthesized and its crystal structure has been determined by X-ray diffraction methods. It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n, with a = 12.5832(6) Å, b = 7.0512(5) Å, c = 18.4669(12) Å, β = 96.826(1)°, and Dcalc = 1.345 g cm−1 for Z = 4. In the structure, two pyridyl rings, phenyl ring, and triazole ring do not share a common plane. The most favored orientation of the pyridyl rings in the crystal is that their planes are inclined toward opposite directions with respect to the triazole ring.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, we have investigated some tilted Bianchi Type I models with heat conduction filled with disordered radiation of perfect fluid. To get a determinate solution, we have assumed a condition A =(BC) n between metric potentials. Alternatively we have discussed the case A=(BC) 1/3 for which tilted nature of the model is preserved. The various and geometrical features with singularities in the models are also discussed.

Notes: Abstract The novel cobalt(II) and nickel(II) complexes with 4-(p-methoxyphenyl)-3,5-bis(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole (MOBPT) have been synthesized and their molecular structures determined by X-ray analysis, i.r. and by ESI-MS spectroscopy. The metal atom is in a distorted octahedral environment. Two bidentate chelating ligands (MOBPT) coordinate to the metal center equatorially and two water molecules coordinate axially. Each MOBPT entity coordinates via one triazole nitrogen and one pyridine nitrogen atom. Magnetic measurements show that the complexes are high-spin species in the 75–300 K range.

Notes: Abstract  Void fraction and pressure drop correlations play an important role in predicting the performance of natural circulation loops. Hence an assessment of the commonly used and often cited correlations for pressure drop and void fraction has been carried out with data from natural circulation loops. This assessment considered 33 void fraction correlations and 14 pressure drop correlations. The void fraction correlations were initially tested against the various limiting conditions. Only 14 correlations were found to satisfy at least two limiting conditions (i.e., at x = 0; α = 0 and at x = 1; α = 1) and were assessed against the data. This assessment showed that the Chexal et al. (1996) correlation is better than all the others considered. The assessment of pressure drop correlations were carried out with the Chexal et al. (1996) correlation for void fraction and Saha-Zuber model for the onset of subcooled boiling. This assessment showed that most correlations give predictions close to each other.

Notes: Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] is grown in rotation with wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] in the mid-Atlantic. Sufficient data on N fertilization of sorghum are not available for this region. Our objective was to evaluate the influence of multi-rate N fertilization on dryland sorghum. Treatments consisted of factorial combinations of four starter-band N rates (11, 34, 56, and 78 kg N ha−1) and four sidedress N rates (0, 45, 90, and 134 kg N ha−1). A broadcast treatment of 67 kg N ha−1 at planting was also included. Starter-band was applied 5 cm to the side and below the seed. Sidedress was applied 35 days after emergence at the eight-leaf growth stage. Grain yield ranged from 1.7 to 11.9 Mg ha−1 over eight site-years and was responsive and nonresponsive to N applications on four sites each. Nonresponsiveness was either due to high levels (〉85 kg N ha−1) of residual soil mineral N, or severe water stress conditions. Our results indicate that production of sorghum on soils testing high in mineral N (50 kg N ha−1 in the surface 0.3 m) at planting should not receive any starter-band N in conjunction with sidedress N application of 130 kg N ha−1 for optimum economic return to N fertilization. For soils testing low in mineral N, 40 kg N ha−1 starter-band in conjunction with 130 kg N ha−1 sidedress N should optimize the sorghum yields in most situations.

Notes: Abstract The effects of propranolol and verapamil on contractile dysfunction, subcellular remodeling and changes in gene expression in cardiac hypertrophy due to pressure overload were examined. Rats were subjected to banding of the abdominal aorta and then treated with either propranolol (10 mg/kg daily), verapamil (5 mg/kg daily) or vehicle for 8 weeks after the surgery. Depression of the left ventricular function in the hypertrophied heart was associated with decreases in myofibrillar and myosin CA2+ ATPase activities as well as Ca2+-pump and Ca2+-release activities of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR). The level of a-myosin heavy chain (α-MHC) mRNA was decreased while that of β-MHC mRNA was increased in the pressure-overloaded heart. The level of SR Ca2+-pump ATPase (SERCA2) mRNA and protein content for SERCA2 were decreased in the pressure overloaded heart. Treatment of the hypertrophied animals with propranolol or verapamil resulted in preservation of the left ventricular function and prevention of the subcellular alterations. Shift in the α- and β-MHC mRNA levels and changes in the expression in SERCA2 mRNA level and protein content were also attenuated by these treatments. The results suggest that blockade of β-adrenoceptors or voltage-dependent calcium channels normalizes the cardiac gene expression, prevents subcellular remodeling and thus attenuates heart dysfunction in rats with cardiac hypertrophy. Furthermore, both cardiac β-adrenoceptors and L-type Ca2+-channels may be involved in the genesis of cardiac hypertrophy due to pressure overload.

Notes: Abstract Compression tests were carried out on UHV diffusion bonded single crystalline sapphire/Nb/sapphire joints to investigate their mechanical properties, the mechanisms that lead to the failure of the joints and the dislocation-interface interaction. The tests were performed for different orientation relationships (OR) at the interface to study the influence of different bond strength on the mechanical behavior. Additionally, the metal layer thickness was varied for each OR to alter the influence of the interface. The experimental results showed, that with decreasing metal layer thickness the stress needed to form a crack increases drastically, whereas for the Nb/sapphire system the bond strength at the interface seems to have no significant influence on the mechanical behavior of the joint. A theoretical model will be presented that explains the experimentally observed relationship between metal layer thickness and crack stress.

Notes: Abstract Oxidation of p-xylene and methyl 4-methylbenzoate were catalyzed by transition metal Schiff-base complexes having the general formula LMCl1–2 (where M = manganese or ruthenium and L = salen, salicylaldehydeethylenediimine, saloph, salicylaldehyde-o-phenylenediimine and EDTA, ethylenediaminetetraacetate) at 150°C and 500 psig air and gave p-toluic acid (〉 85 %) and monomethyl terephthalate (〉 70%) as the major oxidation products, respectively.

Notes: Abstract The absorption and emission spectral properties of toluidine blue O (TBO) and Meldola's blue (MDB) in the presence of cyclodextrins (CDs) were studied. Formation of 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 (CD-Dye) inclusion complexes were observed with β-CD and γ-CD, respectively. An increase in the emission intensity was noticed in the presence of β-CD due to the formation of 1 : 1 (CD-Dye) inclusion complexes. However, a decrease in the emission intensity was observed in the presence of γ-CD due to the formation of 1 : 2 (CD-Dye) inclusion complexes. Dimerization of dye molecules in the presence of γ-CD lead to a decrease in the emission intensity. The formation constants for the 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 (CD-Dye) inclusion complexes were calculated.
