Notes: Abstract This paper presents a nearest neighbor method for the spatial analysis of data collected from discrete field sampling sites. The method was applied to point counts of birds at permanent survey sites in the Nicolet National Forest of northeastern Wisconsin. The spatial analysis method we developed uses a Monte Carlo randomization approach to test for non-randomness not only of the mean nearest neighbor distance between n points but also the mean second nearest, third nearest,..., to (n−1)th nearest distances to reveal spatial information at multiple scales. Because the bird survey sites are not randomly distributed throughout the forest, the survey sites at which a given species was recorded were compared with random samples drawn from the total survey sites rather than from all possible points within the forest. More refined analyses restricted the randomization by (a) habitat type, in order to separate the effects of non-randomly distributed habitat types on species' distributions; and (b) north-south regions of the forest, in order to account for regional gradients in distribution which were evident for some species. Spatial patterns among the sites at which the birds were detected reveal information about the scale at which the birds are distributed in their environment and provide a more complete picture of multi-scale bird population dynamics.

Notes: Abstract Mean fitness is non-decreasing in the symmetry sector of the frequency trajectory followed in competitive replication at sublinear propagation rates (parabolic time course). This sector contains the pairwise symmetric distribution of species frequencies and its neighboring states, and represents at least half the possible states of an evolving sublinear system. States in the non-symmetry sector produce a negative rate of change in mean fitness. The heterogeneous steady state attained in a finite sublinear system is destabilized by formation of a variant with above-threshold fitness. Evolution in the post-steady-state interval elevates the fitness threshold for coexistence. Contrary to the proposition that ‘parabolic growth invariably results in the survival of all competing species’, only species with sufficient fitness to avoid subthreshold fitness survive.

Notes: Abstract Real-time scheduling, or scheduling with respect to a deadline, is critical in many application areas such as telecommunications, control systems, and manufacturing. This paper presents a novel approach to real-time scheduling based on a queueing theory model. Using real-time queueing theory (RTQT), one can analytically determine the distribution of the lead-time profile (i.e., the time until the deadline is reached) of customers waiting for service. Emphasis is placed on the development of the equations used to determine the lead-time profile distribution. The development of the GI/G/1 case is presented and confirmed using simulation. Simulation results confirm prior research for the M/M/1 and GI/M/1 case. As a practical application, RTQT is used to implement a packet admission control algorithm for a telecommunications network. Using this algorithm, packet lateness was reduced by up to 31%.

Notes: Abstract The effect of pretreatment, using hydrogen or carbon monoxide, on the activity and selectivity of a ruthenium promoted cobalt catalyst (Ru(0.20 wt%)/Co(10 wt%)/TiO2) during Fischer–Tropsch (FT) synthesis was studied in a continuous-stirred tank reactor (CSTR). The hydrogen reduced catalyst exhibited a high initial synthesis gas conversion (72.5%) and reached steady state after 40 h on stream, after which the catalyst deactivated slightly with time on stream. The carbon monoxide reduced catalyst reached steady state quickly and showed a lower activity and a good stability. Methane selectivity on the carbon monoxide reduced catalyst was 15–20% (carbon base), much higher than that on the hydrogen reduced catalyst (5–10%). Carbon monoxide regeneration increased the activity on the hydrogen reduced catalyst; however, it did not have significant effect on the carbon monoxide reduced catalyst.

Notes: Abstract The direct reading emission spectrometer was developed during the1940s. By substituting photo-multiplier tubes and electronics forphotographic film spectrograms, the interpretation of special lineswith a densitometer was avoided. Instead, the instrument providedthe desired information concerning percentage concentration ofelements of interest directly on a dial. Such instruments `de-skill' the job of making such measurements. They do this by encapsulatingin the instrument the skills previously employed by the analyst,by `skilling' the instrument. This paper presents a history of thedevelopment of the Dow Chemical/Baird Associates direct reader. Thishistory is used to argue for a materialist conception of knowledge. The instrument is a material form of knowledge, knowledge of aspectsof spectroscopy, analytical spectrochemistry, electronics, instrumentdesign and construction, and metal production industry economics.

Notes: Abstract Speed of nerve impulse conduction is greatly increased by myelin, a multi-layered membranous sheath surrounding axons. Myelinated axons are ubiquitous among the vertebrates, but relatively rare among invertebrates. Electron microscopy of calanoid copepods using rapid cryofixation techniques revealed the widespread presence of myelinated axons. Myelin sheaths of up to 60 layers were found around both sensory and motor axons of the first antenna and interneurons of the ventral nerve cord. Except at nodes, individual lamellae appeared to be continuous and circular, without seams, as opposed to the spiral structure of vertebrate and annelid myelin. The highly organized myelin was characterized by the complete exclusion of cytoplasm from the intracellular spaces of the cell generating it. In regions of compaction, extracytoplasmic space was also eliminated. Focal or fenestration nodes, rather than circumferential ones, were locally common. Myelin lamellae terminated in stepwise fashion at these nodes, appearing to fuse with the axolemma or adjacent myelin lamellae. As with vertebrate myelin, copepod sheaths are designed to minimize both resistive and capacitive current flow through the internodal membrane, greatly speeding nerve impulse conduction. Copepod myelin differs from that of any other group described, while sharing features of every group.
