    Description: The two-dimensional scattering of water waves over a finite region of arbitrarily varying topography linking two semi-infinite regions of constant depth is considered. Unlike many approaches to this problem, the formulation employed is exact in the context of linear theory, utilizing simple combinations of Green's functions appropriate to water of constant depth and the Cauchy-Riemann equations to derive a system of coupled integral equations for components of the fluid velocity at certain locations. Two cases arise, depending on whether the deepest point of the topography does or does not lie below the lower of the semi-infinite horizontal bed sections. In each, the reflected and transmitted wave amplitudes are related to the incoming wave amplitudes by a scattering matrix which is defined in terms of inner products involving the solution of the corresponding integral equation system. This solution is approximated by using the variational method in conjunction with a judicious choice of trial function which correctly models the fluid behaviour at the free surface and near the joins of the varying topography with the constant-depth sections, which may not be smooth. The numerical results are remarkably accurate, with just a two-term trial function giving three decimal places of accuracy in the reflection and transmission coefficients in most cases, whilst increasing the number of terms in the trial function results in rapid convergence. The method is applied to a range of examples.

    Description: The behaviour of water waves over periodic beds is considered in a two-dimensional context and using linear theory. Three cases are investigated: the scattering of waves by a finite section of periodic topography; the Bloch problem for infinite periodic topography; and sloshing motions over periodic topography confined between vertical boundaries. Connections are established between these problems. A transfer matrix method incorporating evanescent modes is developed for the scattering problem, which reduces the computation to that required for a single period, without compromising full linear theory. The problem of the existence of Bloch waves can also be posed on a single period, leading to a close relationship between it and the scattering problem. Sloshing motions over periodic beds, which may be regarded as special cases of the Bloch problem, are also found to have a significant connection with wave scattering. Integral equations methods allied to the Galerkin approximation are used to resolve the three problems numerically. In particular, the full linear solution for Bragg resonance is presented, allowing the accuracy of existing approximations to this phenomenon to be assessed. The selection of results given illustrates the main features of the work.

    Notes: Abstract This paper extends the class of integral equations whose solutions can be generated from a finite number of particular cases to include those of Sturm-Liouville type, including the case where the associated operators are not self-adjoint. An explicit expression for the resolvent operator is generated from two particular solutions, in a form amenable to the use of approximation techniques. A usable estimate of the norm of the inverse operator is obtained even in cases where approximate solutions have to be used.

    Notes: Abstract Following Ellis, we investigate the notion of totally free crossed square and related squared complexes. It is shown how to interpret the information in a free simplicial group given with a choice of CW-basis, in terms of the data for a totally free crossed square.     Notes: Abstract It has been claimed that writing to learn mathematics (WTLM) may benefit students' conceptual understanding as well as their procedural ability. To investigate this claim, we collected data from students in two sections of an introductory calculus course. In one of the sections, students used WTLM activities and discussed the activities after completing the writing; in the other section, students used similar activities that did not involve writing but engaged them in thinking about the mathematical ideas and in discussing the activities. The errors from the in-class and final exams of both groups of students were categorized and analyzed for information about the students' conceptual and procedural understanding. We found no significant differences between the WTLM group and the non-writing group, which suggests that the real benefit from writing activities may not be in the actual activity of writing, but rather in the fact that such activities require students to struggle to understand mathematical ideas well enough to communicate their understanding to others.

    Notes: Abstract Satellite imagery is a useful tool for large-scale habitat analysis; however, its limitations need to be tested. We tested these limitations by varying the methods of a habitat evaluation for white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in the Adirondack Park, New York, USA, utilizing harvest data to create and validate the assessment models. We used two classified images, one with a large minimum mapping unit but high accuracy and one with no minimum mapping unit but slightly lower accuracy, to test the sensitivity of the evaluation to these differences. We tested the utility of two methods of assessment, habitat suitability index modeling, and pattern recognition modeling. We varied the scale at which the models were applied by using five separate sizes of analysis windows. Results showed that the presence of a large minimum mapping unit eliminates important details of the habitat. Window size is relatively unimportant if the data are averaged to a large resolution (i.e., township), but if the data are used at the smaller resolution, then the window size is an important consideration. In the Adirondacks, the proportion of hardwood and softwood in an area is most important to the spatial dynamics of deer populations. The low occurrence of open area in all parts of the park either limits the effect of this cover type on the population or limits our ability to detect the effect. The arrangement and interspersion of cover types were not significant to deer populations.

    Notes: Abstract  We present the first genetic map of wild rice (Zizania palustris L., 2n=2x=30), a native aquatic grain of northern North America. The map is composed principally of previously mapped RFLP (restriction fragment length polymorphism) genetic markers from rice (Oryza sativa 2n=2x=24). The map is important as a foundation for genetic and crop improvement studies, as well as a reference for genome organization comparisons among Gramineae species. A comparative mapping approach with rice is especially useful because wild rice is grouped in the same subfamily, Oryzoideae, and no other mapping comparison has yet been made within the subfamily. As rice is the reference point for mapping and gene cloning in cereals, establishing a consensus map within the subfamily identifies conserved and unique regions. The genomes of wild rice and rice differ in total DNA content (wild rice has twice that of rice) and chromosome pairs (wild rice=15 versus rice=12). The wild rice linkage map reported herein consists of 121 RFLP markers on 16 linkage groups spanning 1805 cM. Two linkage groups consist of only two markers. Colinear markers were found representing all rice linkage groups except #12. The majority of rice loci mapped to colinearly arranged arrays in wild rice (92 of 118). Features of the map include duplication of portions of three rice linkage groups and three possible translocations. The map gives basic information on the composition of the wild rice genome and provides tools to assist in the domestication of this important food source.
