    Notes: Abstract Bacterial isolates from Tapioca cultivar soil were systematically identified. The effect of culture conditions and medium components on the production of extracellular amylase and pullulanase by Micrococcus halobius OR-1 were investigated. Amylase and pullulanase activity in the cell-free supernatant reached a maximum of 8.6 U/ml and 4.8 U/ml after 48 h, respectively. The enzyme converted the complex polysaccharides starch, dextrin, pullulan, amylose and amylopectin predominantly into maltotriose. Saccharification of 15% cereal, tuber starches and root starches with the whole cultured cells (WCC) or cell-free supernatant (CFS) showed comparable and complete saccharification within 90 min. These saccharifying enzymes had a pH optimum of 8.0 and were stable over a broad pH range of 6–12. Thus the coexpressed physicochemically compatible extracellular amylase and pullulanase produced by the Micrococcus halobius OR-1 strain might have important value in the enzyme-based starch saccharification industry.

    Notes: Abstract In four genotypes of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) BG 362, BG 372, BG 329 and C235 the relationship between somatic embryogenesis of leaf explants and ethylene and methane evolution was studied. In BG 362, which was more embryogenic than other genotypes, a higher ethylene:methane ratio of 5.8:1 at day one after inoculation in the induction medium and a lower ethylene:methane ratio of 2.89:1 in the maturation medium was found. On the contrary, in BG 372 with the least embryogenic potential, a lower ethylene:methane ratio of 1.7:1 in the induction medium and a higher ethylene:methane ratio of 4:1 in the maturation medium was found. Thus, these ratios in induction and maturation stages seems to be markers for embryogenesis in leaf explants of chickpea.

    Description: This report presents a survey of the traffic management Issues in the design and implementation of satellite Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks. The report focuses on the efficient transport of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) traffic over satellite ATM. First, a reference satellite ATM network architecture is presented along with an overview of the service categories available in ATM networks. A delay model for satellite networks and the major components of delay and delay variation are described. A survey of design options for TCP over Unspecified Bit Rate (UBR), Guaranteed Frame Rate (GFR) and Available Bit Rate (ABR) services in ATM is presented. The main focus is on traffic management issues. Several recommendations on the design options for efficiently carrying data services over satellite ATM networks are presented. Most of the results are based on experiments performed on Geosynchronous (GEO) latencies. Some results for Low Earth Orbits (LEO) and Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) latencies are also provided.
