Notizen: Protective properties of 3–5 nm thick carbon overcoat layers deposited on magnetic hard disks by ion beam deposition (IBD) and plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) were investigated. It is found that these overcoats are superior to the sputtered carbon films at thicknesses below 5 nm. Low-stiction performance of 3-nm-thick IBD films without any detectable wear was observed during 50 000 contact start-stop cycles at 55 °C and 10% relative humidity. Surface concentration of cobalt ions is reduced by as much as an order of magnitude as compared to the media with sputtered overcoats. Polarization resistivity values for IBD and PECVD overcoats are by an order of magnitude higher. The results show that thickness of protective carbon overcoats on magnetic hard disks can be reduced to 3–5 nm without compromising media reliability requirements. This reduction is critical for the continuing growth of storage density. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Low fly-height magnetoresistive (MR) sliders and low glide-height laser-texture thin film disks were introduced to meet the tribological challenges of proximity MR recording, with which an areal density of 5 Gb/in.2 has been achieved when using the sliders with dual-stripe MR heads and the disks with low-noise media. The 30% pico sliders employed two air-bearing designs with a fly height around 12.5 nm. The thin film disks used superfinish substrates with a glide-avalanche-height falling well below 10.0 nm. In the contact start/stop (CSS) zones, small crater-shape laser texture bumps were generated to meet both low stiction and low glide-height requirements. An 80 Å thin amorphous nitrogenated carbon was added over the magnetic layers as a protective overcoat. A layer of perfluoropolyether with an additive of phosphazene compounds was applied on the disk surface to improve the reliability of head–disk interfaces. The near contact head–disk interface survived for 20 k-cycle hot/wet and hot/dry CSS tests without wear and high stiction. Twenty-four-hour hot/wet park-stiction values after 20 k CSS cycles were within the acceptable range. Remarkably, thermal-asperity tests showed no hits by using the proximity heads on the ultralow glide-height thin film disks. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A sharp variation at some radial positions superimposed on a slow change in the profiles of the fluctuation levels, fluctuation-driven particle and energy fluxes, which is referred as spatial intermittency, is observed in the core plasma of the Keda Tokamak-5C (KT-5C) [World Survey of Activities in Controlled Fusion Research, Nuclear Fusion Special Supplement (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1991), p. 190.]. The peaks in the profiles are located in the vicinity of low-q rational surfaces, and fluctuation spectra perpendicular to the magnetic field become more anisotropy there. The intermittency may be related to the radial variations in the nonlinear mode couplings near the low-q resonant surfaces. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: This study presents a failure criteria for multiple permeable cracks embedded in an infinite piezoelectric solid, which is separately subjected to a set of uniform-electromechanical loads. Based on the equivalent inclusion method, permeable cracks are initially treated as elliptical inclusions with fictitious eigenstrains and eigenelectric fields, in which their elastic moduli and piezoelectric coefficients are taken as zero while dielectric constants remain finite. Consequently the interaction energy between the cracks and the applied electromechanical loading can be simply expressed in terms of the applied electromechanical loads and the equivalent eigenfields. With this energy function, the energy release rates and the critical loads for fracture are separately acquired in a closed form for a simple tension, in-plane and out-of-plane shears, as well as normal electric flux density applied. The closed forms for energy release rate and critical electromechanical loading reveal that these forms are a function of the aspect ratio of the permeable elliptical cracks, type of the electromechanical loading, volume fraction of the cracks, and piezoelectric properties. Analysis results indicate that the different mechanical loading propagates the expansion of the elliptical cracks. Meanwhile, the distinct electric fields can retard the dilation of the elliptical cracks, particularly for an in-plane electric field incited perpendicularly with cracked faces. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Crystalline ZnS films were prepared on glass substrates from a high-crystallinity ZnS pellet using an ion-plating method. The crystallinity and friction-induced photon-emitting capability (triboluminescence) of the films were greatly enhanced by postannealing under vacuum. The annealing treatment made the ZnS films strongly adherent to the glass substrate and enhanced their endurance to friction. This greatly enhanced ZnS as a stress/friction sensor for various applications.

Notizen: Visualization of stress distribution has been realized by a nondestructive mechanoluminescence (ML) from SrAl2O4:Eu, which can emit three magnitudes higher visible light than that of well-known ML substance of quartz. A simulation result confirms that such a ML image successfully reflects the stress distribution. A kinetic model for ML of SrAl2O4:Eu is proposed. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A contact has been developed to achieve a low specific contact resistance to p-type GaN. The contact consisted of a bi-layer Ni/Au film deposited on p-type GaN followed by heat treatment in air to transform the metallic Ni into NiO along with an amorphous Ni–Ga–O phase and large Au grains. A specific contact resistance as low as 4.0×10−6 Ω cm2 was obtained at 500 °C. This low value was obtained by the optimization of Ni/Au film thickness and heat treatment temperatures. Below about 400 °C, Ni was not completely oxidized. On the other hand, at temperatures higher than about 600 °C, the specific contact resistance increased because the NiO detached from p-GaN and the amount of amorphous Ni–Ga–O phase formed was more than that of the sample annealed at 500 °C. The mechanism of obtaining low-resistance ohmic contacts for the oxidized Ni/Au films was explained with a model using energy band diagrams of the Au/p-NiO/p-GaN structure. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We describe a fiber-optic interferometer that employs wavelength changes to achieve maximum sensitivity. Wavelength changes are induced by adjusting the operating temperature of the laser, eliminating the need for an actuator to vary the spacing between the sensing fiber and the object to be monitored. The instrument and techniques described are suitable for cryogenic, high vacuum applications such as magnetic resonance force microscopy, where space is limited and micromanipulation can be challenging. The noise floor of 1.6×10−3 nm/Hz is adequate for monitoring subangstrom displacement of force microscope cantilevers. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Working in research and development groups and development groups and using actual materials, the learners acquire the abilities of systematic thinking and problem solving in completing the multifunction robot project. Moreover, the learners keep a record of data and messages collected in various stages of robot design and production. They also have to use thinking skills to locate problems and keep looking for better ways to modify and improve on their ideas until the robot function as it is originally intended to.A creativity-developing, and learning experiment is described involving the design of a multi-function robot. We conclude that the development of creative capabilities is enhanced when the design processes are accompanied by reflection and reporting procedures.
