Notes: -γ-Oxo-α,β-unsaturated δ-lactones and lactams, which are easily accessible from their corresponding 2-furylcarbinols, were used as substrates for the 1,4-reductive addition of hydrazoic acid. The outcome of the reaction is the formation, in high yields, of the corresponding α-amino-γ-oxo-α,β-unsaturated δ-lactones and -lactams, compounds of great biological and synthetic interest.

Notes: Selected racemic trans-2-alkoxycarbonyl-3,6-dihydro-2H-thiopyran S-oxides 2a-h have been subjected to enzyme-assisted hydrolysis under conditions of kinetic resolution to give the corresponding acids and recovered esters with moderate to high enantiomeric purities (up to 95%). The enantioselectivity of the reaction was found to be strongly dependent on the structures of the substrates used.

Notes: The complexes [(COT)Ln{N(SiMe3)2}(THF)] (Ln = late lanthanide metal) are readily accessible but, until now, the samarium analogue has proved elusive. The latter can be formed in solution but is easily desolvated during the isolation process, leading to a highly associated complex which is only soluble in coordinating solvents or in the presence of ancillary ligands.

Notes: Complex 1bshows an unprecedented high activity in the Heck reaction. Kinetic studies show that in this system not the oxidative addition but the alkene coordination/migratory insertion is the rate determining step.

Notes: A novel heterometallic aggregate Pb2Al5(μ3-O)(μ4-O)(μ-OiPr)9(OiPr)3(μ-OAc)3 obtained from the interaction of Pb(OAc)2 and Al(O-iPr)3 is the first structurally characterized example based on lead and aluminum. This compound has been isolated in high yield and examined by 1H-, 13C-, and 27Al NMR, and in the solid state by X-ray crystallography.

Notes: Reaction of Re2{μ-O2CC(CH3)3}4Cl2 with [(CO)5M-CN]Na (M = Cr, Mo, W) leads to tetranuclear complexes of formula Re2{μ-O2CC(CH3)3}4[-NC-M(CO)5]2 (M = Cr, Mo, W). These complexes were characterized by 1H-, 13C-, and 95Mo-NMR, IR and Raman spectroscopy, elemental analysis and examined by cyclic voltammetry. The applied methods show the donor capabilities of the [(CO)5M-CN]- ligands which shift electron density towards the Re centers weakening the Re-Re quadruple bond. The Re-Re bond lengths and the ν(Re-Re) force constants are estimated based on the FT-IR and Raman examinations. Photochemical examinations and TG/MS experiments have also been conducted. The latter method shows that the product complexes decompose around 100 °C, by first loosing their carbonyl substituents; as do the Cr, Mo, W precursor compounds. The dirhenium tetrapivalate unit decomposes only at higher temperatures in a distinct second step.

Notes: -A novel, single-chained ammonium amphiphile that carries an o-hydroxyazobenzene unit at the terminus of its hydrophobic chain has been synthesized. This compound forms ordered thread-like aggregates upon dispersion in water. These aggregates exhibit a phase transition at 56 °C. The o-hydroxyazobenzene unit binds several transition-metal ions in a 2:1 stoichiometry. Binding of these metal ions results in a lowering of the critical aggregation concentration. From the changes in the UV absorption spectrum it is concluded that the Cu2+ complex forms more tightly packed aggregates in water than the Zn2+ and Ni2+ complexes.

Notes: The sponge-derived fungi Ulocladium botrytis and Asteromyces cruciatus, and the algal-derived fungus Varicosporina ramulosa, were isolated and extracts from cultures investigated for their metabolite production. Investigations of the extract of the culture of U. botrytis guided by bioassay yielded the new tyrosine kinase (p56lck) inhibitor ulocladol (1) together with 1-hydroxy-6-methyl-8-(hydroxymethyl)xanthone (3), which showed antifungal activity. The extract of the culture medium of A. cruciatus yielded the new metabolite (+)-2,4-dimethyl-4,5-dihydrofuran-3-carbaldehyde (4) together with the known compounds (3S,5R)-dimethyldihydrofuran-2-one (5) and tri-O-acetyl glycerol. From V. ramulosa the five macrodiolides grahamimycin A1 (6), colletoketol (7), (6R,11R,12R,14R)-colletodiol (8), 9,10-dihydro-(6R,11S,12S,14R)-colletodiol (9) and 9,10-dihydro-(6R,11R,12R,14R)-colletodiol (10) together with ergosterol were obtained, 9 and 10 being new fungal metabolites.

Notes: The regiochemistry of the [3+2] cycloaddition reactions between 4-R-phenacylpyridazinium ylides and acrylonitrile has been studied. Theoretical and experimental studies have been performed, both of which show that the reaction is regiospecific. Four new tetrahydropyrrolopyridazine heterocycles have been obtained. The structures of the new compounds were established by elemental (C,H,N) and spectral analyses (IR, 1H and 13C NMR, MS).

Notes: Migration of coordinated PtII from the endocyclic N(1) site to the exocyclic nitrogen atom in 9-methyladenine occurs at high pH values. The resulting N(6)-platinated complex has been characterized by X-ray crystal structure analysis and by 1H- and 195Pt-NMR spectroscopy. The 1H-NMR spectra show that the PtII(dien) unit at N(6) can adopt either a syn or an anti conformation with respect to the N(1) site, and that protonation of the ring nitrogen atoms N(1) and/or N(7) perturbs the syn/anti equilibrium.
