Notes: Abstract. Meiotic segregation patterns of chromosomes 3 and 9 were analyzed in sperm of two translocation carriers (t(3;9)(q26.2;q32) and t(3;9)(p25;q32)) by triple-color fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) with a telomeric DNA probe in addition to two centromeric probes. The frequencies of each sperm product resulting from alternate or adjacent I, adjacent II and 3:1 segregation in a t(3;9)(q26.2;q32) translocation carrier were 88.35%, 5.44% and 5.94%, respectively. On the other hand, the frequencies of each sperm product in a t(3;9)(p25;q32) translocation carrier were 89.23%, 6.02% and 4.48%, respectively. Of all the sperm products, the frequency of normal or chromosomally balanced sperm in a t(3;9)(q26.2;q32) and a t(3;9)(p25;q32) were 52.49% and 47.25%, respectively. The frequencies of each sperm product resulting from various segregations were different between both carriers and significantly deviated from the expected frequencies. Additional dual-color and triple-color FISH were performed to analyze aneuploidy rates for chromosomes 12, 17, 18, X and Y in order to detect any interchromosomal effect; no evidence of an interchromosomal effect was found.

Notes: Abstract. Although molecular phylogenetic studies of cyanobacteria on the basis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence have been reported, the topologies were unstable, especially in the inner branchings. Our analysis of 16S rRNA gene phylogeny by the maximum-likelihood and neighbor-joining methods combined with rate homogeneous and heterogeneous models revealed seven major evolutionary lineages of the cyanobacteria, including prochlorophycean organisms. These seven lineages are always stable on any combination of these methods and models, fundamentally corresponding to phylogenetic relationships based on other genes, e.g., psbA, rbcL, rnpB, rpoC, and tufA. Moreover, although known genotypic and phenotypic characters sometimes appear paralleled in independent lineages, many characters are not contradictory within each group. Therefore we propose seven evolutionary groups as a working hypothesis for successive taxonomic reconstruction. New 16S rRNA sequences of five unicellular cyanobacterial strains, PCC 7001, PCC 7003, PCC 73109, PCC 7117, and PCC 7335 of Synechococcus sp., were determined in this study. Although all these strains have been assigned to ``marine clusters B and C,'' they were separated into three lineages. This suggests that the organisms classified in the genus Synechococcus evolved diversely and should be reclassified in several independent taxonomic units. Moreover, Synechococcus strains and filamentous cyanobacteria make a monophyletic group supported by a comparatively high statistical confidence value (80 to 100%) in each of the two independent lineages; therefore, these monophylies probably reflect the convergent evolution of a multicellular organization.

Notes: Abstract. To evaluate the independent and interactive contributions of alcohol dehydrogenase-2 (ADH2), aldehyde dehydrogenase-2 (ALDH2) and ethanol-induced isozyme cytochrome P450-2E1 (CYP2E1) genes to alcohol consumption large enough to induce health problems, 643 healthy Japanese men aged between 23 and 64 years, recruited from two different occupational groups, were analyzed for genotype and drinking habits. The frequency of excessive alcohol consumers (EAC) who drank 90 ml or more alcohol more than 3 days a week was significantly higher in subjects possessing the ALDH2 1 /ALDH2 1 genotype than in those having ALDH2 1 /ALDH2 2 or ALDH2 2 /ALDH2 2 genotypes. A significant difference was also found in the different genotypes of CYP2E1. Moreover, a borderline significant interaction between the ALDH2 and CYP2E1 genotypes on excessive alcohol consumption was observed, i.e., the group of subjects having the c2 allele of CYP2E1 had a higher frequency of EAC than those having c1/c1 genotypes in the genotype subgroup ALDH2 1 /ALDH2 1 , whereas these were not found in the heterozygote and homozygote subgroups of the ALDH2 2 allele. Neither the independent nor interactive genetic effect of ADH2 on excessive alcohol consumption was obvious. In conclusion, Japanese men with the ALDH2 1 /ALDH2 1 genotype and the c2 allele of CYP2E1 are at higher risk of showing excessive alcohol consumption.

Notes: Abstract Simple visual and spectrophotometric methods for the determination of ammonia nitrogen in water are proposed, based on the color development of indothymol blue formed between ammonia and thymol. The color development was accelerated by nitroprusside to complete in 3 min. This color development is remarkably rapid compared with that of the other conventional methods with indothymol blue and indophenol blue. The concentration range of ammonia nitrogen spectrophotometrically determined was 0.04–1.2 mg/L NH4-N. The absorbance per 1 μg NH4-N was 0.0215 (molar absorptivity = 1.51 × 104) at 690 nm. The visual method not using any instrument as an in situ method in field works was developed based on the optimum conditions for the established spectrophotometric method. This visual method was successfully applied to the determination of ammonia nitrogen in environmental waters.

Notes: Abstract. A kinematic construction rule determining the trajectory of human sequential movements is formulated using minimum-jerk and minimum-angular-jerk trajectories. The kinematic construction rule states that the observed trajectory of sequential movements coincides with a weighted average of the minimum-jerk trajectory and the segmented minimum-angular-jerk trajectory. This rule covers not only point-to-point movements but also simple sequential movements. Five kinds of experiments that measure the trajectories in planar, multijoint sequential arm movements were conducted. The measured trajectories coincide with the predictions made on the basis of the kinematic construction rule presented here. Moreover, predictions of previous models such as the minimum-jerk, the equilibrium-trajectory, and the minimum-torque-change models are shown to be incompatible with our observations of sequential movements.

Notes: Abstract Sporulation inBipolaris oryzae was induced by UV radiation (295 nm), but the number of conidia gradually decreased with increasing duration of UV radiation longer than 1 min. The inductive effect of UV radiation can be nullified by blue light (459 nm) applied immediately before or after inductive UV radiation shorter than 1 min. In contrast, the number of conidia increased with an increasing duration of blue light applied after inductive UV radiation longer than 1 min, but not if it was applied before UV radiation. The present study firstly revealed the possibility of photoreactivation inB. oryzae sporulation.

Notes: Abstract The dependence of photosynthesis on light and temperature is modelled through analysis of transition probabilities of photosystems. In the model, two transition probabilities are functions of light, and one transition probability is a function of temperature. The estimated light-saturated photosynthesis of Ecklonia cava blades at 20 °C was 0.037 mg C cm−2 h−1. The value of the activation energy, the standard enthalpy and the standard entropy were estimated to be 56.5 kJ mol−1, 204 kJ mol−1 and 678 J mol−1 K−1, respectively. A production model (an integral photosynthesis model) for an E. cava stand was developed using the photosynthesis model. Production calculated by the model agreed well with observed data during the growing period of an E. cava stand at a field observation site on the west side of Miura Peninsula, Japan. Results of the analysis of the effects of irradiance and temperature on the production of the E. cava community by the model are: 1. Production decreased with irradiance decrease. The estimated compensation irradiance was 26.5 μmol photons m−2 s−1 when the biomass was 3 kg wet mass m−2 (blade:stipe ratio = 2 kg m−2:1 kg m−2) and the temperature was 20 °C. 2. The optimum temperature decreased when irradiance decreased and when biomass increased. The highest estimated value for the optimum temperature was 24.0 °C. The estimated optimum temperature was 18.2 °C when the biomass was 12 kg wet mass m−2 and the photon irradiance was 200 μmol photons m−2 s−1. 3. The amount of biomass that resulted in the maximum production was influenced by irradiance and temperature. At 400 μmol photons m−2 s−1 and 20 °C, the estimated value of the biomass (blade:stipe = 2:1) giving the maximum pr oduction was about 5.3 kg wet mass m−2. However, at 100 μmol photons m−2 s−1 and 24 °C, the estimated value was about 3.0 kg wet mass m−2. The estimated values of the maximum production under the two conditions were 1.05 and 0.30 g C m−2 h−1, respectively.

Notes: Abstract A flow reactor simulating a submarine hydrothermal system was constructed for examining the likelihood of oligopeptide synthesis from amino acids alone without recourse to any of condensing agents, templates or metallic ions. We demonstrated that when the initial reactant is glycine, the flow reactor can synthesize both di- and tri-glycine. The initial buildup of the yields of both the oligopeptides was found to be exponential with the elapse of time. The oligopeptide synthesis from glycine in the flow reactor could be autocatalytic.
