    Notes: GPS ambiguity resolution is the process of resolving the unknown cycle ambiguities of double-difference (DD) carrier-phase data as integers. It is the key to fast and high-precision relative GPS positioning. Critical in the application of ambiguity resolution is its reliability. Unsuccessful ambiguity resolution, when passed unnoticed, will too often lead to unacceptable errors in the positioning results. High success rates are required for ambiguity resolution to be reliable. In this contribution we will introduce and evaluate such diagnostic measures. They complement existing methods of ambiguity resolution and allow the user and/or analyst to infer their reliability. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Abstract The present paper begins by deriving an instantaneous formulation for the backward-looking (reinforcement based learning) satisfaction balance model of Gray and Tallman (1984). This model is then used to generate interactional data from four simulated agents in a network interaction experiment. Because this initial model does not generate stable interaction structures in the network experiment, it is altered step by step in the direction of a forward-looking (agent with goals) model that has been shown to generate such stable interaction structures. The purpose of the modifications are to learn what aspects of the forward-looking model are needed to evolve a stable interaction structure, and to learn how these aspects may be incorporated into a model that remains essentially reinforcement based.

    Notes: Abstract The primary goal of this paper is to provide a rigorous theoretical justification of Cartan’s method of moving frames for arbitrary finite-dimensional Lie group actions on manifolds. The general theorems are based a new regularized version of the moving frame algorithm, which is of both theoretical and practical use. Applications include a new approach to the construction and classification of differential invariants and invariant differential operators on jet bundles, as well as equivalence, symmetry, and rigidity theorems for submanifolds under general transformation groups. The method also leads to complete classifications of generating systems of differential invariants, explicit commutation formulae for the associated invariant differential operators, and a general classification theorem for syzygies of the higher order differentiated differential invariants. A variety of illustrative examples demonstrate how the method can be directly applied to practical problems arising in geometry, invariant theory, and differential equations.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper we undertake a systematic investigation of affine invariant object detection and image denoising. Edge detection is first presented from the point of view of the affine invariant scale-space obtained by curvature based motion of the image level-sets. In this case, affine invariant maps are derived as a weighted difference of images at different scales. We then introduce the affine gradient as an affine invariant differential function of lowest possible order with qualitative behavior similar to the Euclidean gradient magnitude. These edge detectors are the basis for the extension of the affine invariant scale-space to a complete affine flow for image denoising and simplification, and to define affine invariant active contours for object detection and edge integration. The active contours are obtained as a gradient flow in a conformally Euclidean space defined by the image on which the object is to be detected. That is, we show that objects can be segmented in an affine invariant manner by computing a path of minimal weighted affine distance, the weight being given by functions of the affine edge detectors. The gradient path is computed via an algorithm which allows to simultaneously detect any number of objects independently of the initial curve topology. Based on the same theory of affine invariant gradient flows we show that the affine geometric heat flow is minimizing, in an affine invariant form, the area enclosed by the curve.

    Notes: Abstract. We prove the existence of a social choice function implementable via backward induction which always selects within the ultimate uncovered set. Whereas the uncovered set is the set of maximal elements of the covering relation, the ultimate uncovered set is the set obtained by iterative application of this covering operation. Dutta and Sen (1993) showed that any social choice function which is the solution of a generalized binary voting procedure is implementable via backward induction. Our result follows from Dutta and Sen's theorem, in that we construct a binary voting procedure always selecting within the ultimate uncovered set. We use the classical multistage elimination procedure, which always selects an alternative within the uncovered set. When this procedure is also used to select among all of the possible agendas or orderings of alternatives within the procedure, the alternative selected (from the agenda selected) will be within the uncovered set of the uncovered set. Our result follows from repeated application of this construction. Intuitively, the procedure constructed consists of requiring agents to vote on how they should vote and so on.

    Notes: Abstract Adsorption isotherms of carbon tetrachloride at temperatures between 273 and 323 K have been determined on the pure silica form of MCM-41 of pore diameter ca. 3.4 nm. All isotherms were of Type V, the isotherms at 273, 288 and 303 K showing hysteresis loops, whereas the isotherm at 323 K was completely reversible. Despite the questionable validity of the Kelvin equation when applied to narrow mesopores, changes in the relative pressure positions of capillary condensation and evaporation as a function of the temperature appear to be well described. Neutron diffraction measurements at 200 and 273 K show significant changes in the physical properties of the adsorbed CCl4 in the MCM-41 from those of bulk adsorbate. The results also suggest a highly heterogeneous surface and appear to show some flexibility in the pore walls upon pore filling. The conditions required for first order reversible capillary condensation are discussed.
