Notes: Summary Phase diagram obtained from small angle light scattering (SALS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) of polypropylene/liquid paraffin blend system indicates that the melts undergo solid-liquid phase separation upon cooling and liquid paraffin is expelled out of crystalline region of polypropylene. Fibers spun under high take-up draw ratio are found to be hard-elastic. Long periods in the meridional direction are observed on the curves of small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and the yield point of fibers decreases with the increase in liquid paraffin content, which indicates such fibers have row-nucleated lamellar structure perpendicular to the fiber direction. The feasibility of preparing microporous membranes by stretching such fibers is investigated.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract  A slope stability analysis of the Afsin-Elbistan lignite mine in Turkey was prepared taking into account the seismic environment of the mine. In a first paper, Kiliç, du Mouza and Arnould (1997) presented the general conditions of the pit – its geology, hydrogeology and soil mechanical properties – together with computations of safety coefficients using a static approach such as those developed by Bishop, Carter and Sarma. This paper presents a pseudostatic approach and compares it with that used by Kiliç and al (1997). This method of analysis was considered realistic as the mine is located in a seismic area. Having considered the seismic context, a regional seismic coefficient k was derived from the Bath method. This was then introduced into the safety coefficient computations, according to each model used. This coefficient, applied to the weight of the soil likely to move, provides a value of the elastic strength equivalent to the stresses in the dynamic state. As in the static approach, the results highlight the main influence of the hydrogeological and geometrical slope conditions, for each of which several assumptions were tested. Solution I corresponds to the slope geometry proposed during the mine planning stage which was adopted at the commencement of the exploitation. Three important landslides occurred resulting in a change in the slope geometry and leading to the choice of Solution II. Computations made during this work have shown that for this configuration the slopes could be unstable in a saturated state. For this reason Solution III was designed, reducing the slope angles. The variation in the safety coefficients between the static and pseudostatic approach is clearly evident. The difference between the slope geometry assumed in Solution II and that proposed to prevent any slope instability (Solution III) is some 20%. The latter proved to be the only geometry which could be considered stable whatever the hydrogeological conditions.

Notes: Abstract The number of stations attached to a single optical passive star is limited by current state of the art in optical technology. Also, the wavelength range of tunable optical transceivers is limited by current technology. Many high performance computing applications require the use of large size regular topologies for communication between computing nodes. Scalability of passive star networks built with these two limitations becomes an important issue for building larger networks. This is the subject of our study in this paper. In a previous related work we explored the design issues for networks built on a single passive star employing transceivers of a limited tuning range. Here we extend that study by considering the problem of connecting several optical passive stars, each embedded with a given virtual topology, to create larger aggregate networks. The design issues are analyzed and a number of design rules are proposed for building such aggregate networks. We study the scalability of embedded optical passive stars by considering the most commonly employed virtual topologies—complete graph, mesh and hypercube.

Notes: Abstract Aphidius ervi and Aphidius eadyi, two parasitoids of the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum, were attracted to components of the aphid sex pheromone in laboratory bioassays. Pre-test experience with host aphids in the presence of aphid sex pheromone did not affect the response of A. ervi to pheromone in a 4-way olfactometer, compared with that of naive parasitoids. Aphidius ervi females exposed only to the pheromone prior to testing did not respond in the olfactometer, suggesting habituation to the foraging cue by the parasitoid. In a wind tunnel, aphid sex pheromone increased the attraction of A. ervi to the plant-host complex (Vicia faba/A. pisum), suggesting an additive effect when two different foraging cues are present simultaneously.

    Notes: Abstract The complex (Ph4P)2[Mo2S2O2(S2)(S4)] reacts with CuBr to give the dodecanuclear heterobimetallic Mo—Cu—S cage cluster: (Ph4P)2[{Mo2Cu2O2S2(S2)2}3(μ6-S)] (1), which crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1¯, a = 14.445(5), b = 15.396(5), c = 18.858(5) Å, α = 103.12(3), β = 101.93(2), γ = 113.92(3)°, and V = 3517(2) Å3 for Z = 2. The anion 1 can be described as a cage with S2− at the center binding to six Cu atoms; the cage has two big windows each composed of a puckered Cu3S6 9-membered ring.

Notes: Abstract A regular and edge-transitive graph which is not vertex-transitive is said to be semisymmetric. Every semisymmetric graph is necessarily bipartite, with the two parts having equal size and the automorphism group acting transitively on each of these parts. A semisymmetric graph is called biprimitive if its automorphism group acts primitively on each part. In this paper biprimitive graphs of smallest order are determined.

Notes: Abstract. A mean-field model for superconductivity is studied from both the analytical and computational points of view. In this model, the individual vortex-like structures occuring in practical superconductors are not resolved. Rather, these structures are homogenized and a vortex density is solved for. The particular model studied includes effects due to the pinning of vortices. The existence and uniqueness of solutions of a regularized version of the model are demonstrated and the behavior of these solutions as the regularization parameter tends to zero is examined. Then, semi-discrete and fully discrete finite element based discretizations are formulated and analyzed and the results of some computational experiments are presented.

Notes: Abstract Time-resolved spectra and kinetic profiles as well as static spectra of Eu luminescence are measured to understand the binding site characteristics and migration of catalytically important metal cations in Y zeolite. As calcination temperature increases, stoichiometrically exchanged Eu3+ ions, initially hydrated at indefinite sites in the supercage, pass through site II' to migrate into sites I and I' first and the remnants, after binding at sites I and I', stay at site II'.

Notes: Abstract. This paper describes a local model-checking algorithm for the alternation-free fragment of the modal mu-calculus that has been implemented in the Concurrency Factory and discusses its application to the analysis of a real-time communications protocol. The protocol considered is RETHER, a software-based, real-time Ethernet protocol developed at SUNY at Stony Brook. Its purpose is to provide guaranteed bandwidth and deterministic, periodic network access to multimedia applications over commodity Ethernet hardware. Our model-checking results show that (for a particular network configuration) RETHER makes good on its bandwidth guarantees to real-time nodes without exposing non-real-time nodes to the possibility of starvation. Our data also indicate that, in many cases, the state-exploration overhead of the local model checker is significantly smaller than the total amount that would result from a global analysis of the protocol. In the course of specifying and verifying RETHER, we also identified an alternative design of the protocol that warranted further study due to its potentially smaller run-time overhead in servicing requests for data transmission. Again, using local model checking, we showed that this alternative design also possesses the properties of interest. This observation points out one of the often-overlooked benefits of formal verification: by forcing designers to understand their designs rigorously and abstractly, these techniques often enable the designers to uncover interesting design alternatives.
