    Notes: Abstract Amorphous carbon silicon nitride thin films were grown on (100) oriented silicon substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) assisted by an RF nitrogen plasma source. Up to about 30 at. % nitrogen and up to 20 at. % silicon were found in the hard amorphous thin films by XPS in dependence on the composition of the mixed graphite / Si3N4 PLD target. The universal nanohardness was measured to be at maximum load force of 0.1 mN up to 23 GPa for thin CSixNy films with reference value of 14 GPa for single crystalline silicon. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of CSixNy film surfaces showed a clear correlation of binding energy and intensity of fitted features of N 1s, C 1s, and Si 2p peaks to the composition of the graphite / Si3N4 target and to nitrogen flow through the plasma source, indicating soft changes of binding structure of the thin films due to variation of PLD parameters. Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) of Si KL23L23;1D Auger transition gave a detailed view of bonding structure of Si in the CSixNy films. The intensity of π* and σ* resonances at the carbon K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) of the CSixNy films measured at BESSY I corresponded to the nanohardness of the CSixNy films, thus giving insight into chemical binding structure of superhard amorphous materials.

    Notes: Plasma formation and x-ray generation efficiency of a carbon fiber Z pinch are dramatically improved by means of an optimized current prepulse. In this article results are presented of time-integrated and also time-resolved electron temperature measurements using the optical line emission of the coronal plasma surrounding a still, cold fiber. Two phases of discharges with current prepulse are studied: the preionization phase only in which time-integrated spectra of C II–C IV emission are recorded and time resolution of the heating phase after onset of the main current pulse using C III and C IV line emission. Experimentally obtained, n=3–4, 3–3, line ratios are fitted with collisional radiative, ADAS computations of line intensity ratios as a function of electron temperature, density, ne and variable confinement, τ. All levels up to n=5 are included with the influence of higher levels also accounted for. Deviations from coronal balance give an effective value for the product 〈neτ〉. As a result, the electron temperature of the preionized coronal plasma is estimated at Te=5 eV at a density of ne(approximate)1017 cm−3. The temperature rises to about 12 eV at the same density after the start of the main current with prepulse. Similar analytic techniques are applied to time-integrated C V and C VI XUV resonance lines from the main pinch and give plasma parameters in accord with the x-ray continuum diagnostics. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The prominent role of animal bioassay evidence in environmental regulatory decisions compels a careful characterization of extrapolation uncertainties. In noncancer risk assessment, uncertainty factors are incorporated to account for each of several extrapolations required to convert a bioassay outcome into a putative subthreshold dose for humans. Measures of relative toxicity taken between different dosing regimens, different endpoints, or different species serve as a reference for establishing the uncertainty factors. Ratios of no observed adverse effect levels (NOAELs) have been used for this purpose; statistical summaries of such ratios across sets of chemicals are widely used to guide the setting of uncertainty factors. Given the poor statistical properties of NOAELs, the informativeness of these summary statistics is open to question. To evaluate this, we develop an approach to “calibrate” the ability of NOAEL ratios to reveal true properties of a specified distribution for relative toxicity. A priority of this analysis is to account for dependencies of NOAEL ratios on experimental design and other exogenous factors. Our analysis of NOAEL ratio summary statistics finds (1) that such dependencies are complex and produce pronounced systematic errors and (2) that sampling error associated with typical sample sizes (50 chemicals) is nonnegligible. These uncertainties strongly suggest that NOAEL ratio summary statistics cannot be taken at face value; conclusions based on such ratios reported in well over a dozen published papers should be reconsidered.

    Notes: Using highly doped silicon-on-insulator (SOI) films, we demonstrate metallic Coulomb blockade in silicon nanowires at temperatures up to almost 100 K. We propose a process that leads to island formation inside the wire due to a combination of structural roughness and segregation effects during thermal oxidation. Hence, no narrowing of the SOI wire is necessary to form tunneling contacts to the single-electron transistors. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
