    Description / Table of Contents: New Sol-Gel Based Coatings as Corrosion- and Wear-Protection On Non-Ferrous MetalsA new composite coating material has been developed for the protection of non-ferrous alloys (e.g. aluminum, magnesium, zinc and brass). The coating materials were prepared by the solgel process from epoxyalkoxysilanes and aromatic diols to act as crosslinking agents. As solvent, alcohols and glycol ethers have been used.The viscosity of the system (7-55 mPas) was established in a way to be used in spray, dip or flow coating processes. The transparent coatings were cured at T = 100-220°C. In corrosion tests, 3000 hours salt-spray climate and 240 hours CASS-test = Copper chloride and Acetic acid added Salt Spray, no infiltration of the metal-coating interface and no „filiform-corrosion“ on A199.5, AlMg3 and AlMgSil was observed. Brass samples showed less than 4 mm extension of a scribe after 500 hours salt-spray-test. The coatings showed no visible traces of abrasion after 1000 cycles taber abrader test and an excellent adhesion (cross cut and tape-test: grade 0). The transparent basic systems were pigmented by 5 - 10 wt.% of colored organic pigments to obtain all kind of colored coatings.
    Notes: Es wurde ein neuer Beschichtungswerkstoff auf Basis von anorganisch-organischen Kompositen zum Schutz von Metalloberflächen, besonders von Aluminium entwickelt. Das Beschichtungsmaterial wurde über den Sol-Gel-Prozeß synthetisiert, ausgehend von Epoxy-funktionalisierten Alkoxysilanen und aromatischen Diolen als Quervernetzer. Als Lösungsmittel wurden Alkohole und Glykolether verwendet.Die Viskosität der Systeme wurde so eingestellt, daß sowohl Sprüh-, als auch Tauch- und Flut-Beschichtungen durchgeführt werden konnten. Sie lag zwischen 7 und 55 mPas. Nach dem thermischen Verdichtungsprozeß bei 100-220°C wurden transparente Beschichtungen mit ausgezeichneter Haftung auf Al-Mg-, Zn-und Messing-Oberflächen (Gitterschnitt- und Tape-Test: Klasse 0) erhalten. Die Korrosionsfestigkeit beschichteter Aluminiumlegierungen (Al 99.5, AlMg3, AlMgSi I) wurde mit dem Salzsprühverfahren (DIN 50021) und dem CASS-Test (NaCl, CuCl2·2H2O, Essigsäure, pH=3) geprüft und auch nach 3000 Stunden trat keine Unterwanderung der Grenzfläche Metall / Schicht auf. Ebenso wurde keine „Filiform“-Korrosion beobachtet. Messingproben zeigten nach 500 h Salzsprühnebel-Test weniger als 4 mm mittlere Unterwanderungsbreite. Darüber hinaus wurde die Abriebbeständigkeit der Proben überprüft. Die Schichten zeigten keine sichtbare Beschädigung nach Prüfung des Abriebes mit dem Reibradverfahren (1000 Zyklen, Räder: CS 10-F).Es konnten stabile Dispersionen von organischen Farbpigmenten im transparenten Basissystem hergestellt werden, wodurch eine große Vielfalt farbiger Beschichtungen erhalten wurde.

    Description / Table of Contents: Microstructure and Corrosion Behaviour of a Nitrogen Alloyed Stainless SteelThe corrosion behaviour of a nitrogen alloyed stainless steel is investigated using potentiodynamic anodic polarization in physiological NaCl solution. The microstructure of forged samples is determined by microscopy and hardness measurements. The steel shows a globular austenitic structure. In the zone of large forging deformation the grains are elongated. Precipitates are observed in which chromium and molybdenium are enriched. The breakdown potentials range from 200 to 1170 mV vs. SCE, most of the values exceed 500 mV. The breakdown potentials decrease with increasing aspect ratio of the grains and increasing hardness. The precipitates are initial sites for pitting and crater shaped metal dissolution.
    Notes: Das Korrosionsverhalten eines stickstofflegierten rostfreien Stahles wird durch potentiodynamische anodische Polarisation in physiologischer NaCl-Lösung untersucht. Der Gefügezustand geschmiedeter Proben wird mikroskopisch und durch Härtemessungen ermittelt. Der Stahl weist ein globulares austenitisches Gefüge auf, in der Zone starker Schmiedeverformung sind die Körner gestreckt. Es liegen Ausscheidungen vor, in denen Chrom und Molybdän angereichert sind. Der Stahl zeigt Durchbruchspotentiale zwischen 200 und 1170 mV vs. SCE, die meisten Werte liegen über 500 mV. Die Durchbruchspotentiale fallen mit zunehmendem Streckungsgrad der Körner und zunehmender Härte ab. Die Ausscheidungen sind Initialpunkte für loch- und kraterförmigen Materialabtrag.

    Notes: Melt-miscible polymer blends of poly(ethylene oxide)/atactic poly(methyl methacrylate (PEO/a-PMMA)) were prepared by melt-mixing and characterized by pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) dilatometry in the pressure and temperature range of 0 to 200 MPa and 20 to 200°C, respectively. The PVT data were analyzed in terms of two equations of state (EOS). The empirical Tait EOS was applied in the glassy, semicrystalline, and equilibrium melt state, and the Simha-Somcynsky EOS theory was applied in the equilibrium melt and glassy state. The Simha-Somcynsky EOS theory contains a free volume function. The temperature, pressure, and composition dependence of the free volume fraction h calculated from the Simha-Somcynsky EOS theory was studied. As a function of blend composition we observe that the free volume fraction, thermal expansivity, and compressibility all deviate mainly positively from linearity while the specific volume deviates mainly negatively from linearity. These findings are reconciled with composition-dependent free volume parameters, the free volume and cell volume as well as with self- and cross-interaction parameters derived from the Simha-Somcynsky EOS theory as applied to polymer mixtures. Moreover, the pressure dependence of glass and melting transitions as well as crystallization kinetics have been investigated. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: The acceptor monomers maleic anhydride (MSA), itaconic anhydride (ISA), N-phenylmaleimide (NPI) and N-cyclohexylmaleimide (CMI) were combined with the donor monomers styrene (ST), butyl vinyl ether (BV) and N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (NVP) and studied by means of UV spectroscopy using CT bands. In this manner, the 1:1 stoichiometry of the CT complexes, the equilibrium constant in the range of 20°C to 60°C, and the thermodynamic equilibrium data were determined. Additionally, Monte-Carlo simulations of the donor-acceptor combinations in the presence of solvent molecules were run. The cohesion energies calculated from these simulations were used to quantify the donor-acceptor interactions and showed good agreement with the UV spectral data. The acceptor strength decreases in the order MSA 〉 NPI 〉 ISA 〉 CMI, the donor strength in the order of NVP 〉 ST 〉 BV. In the free radical solution copolymerization of the systems NVP/NPI, BV/NPI, acrylonitrile (AN) AN/CMI, AN/NPI, MSA/CMI and MSA/NPI, the reaction rate and molecular weight dependence on the monomer combination, as well as the r-values were determined. Using the Kc-values, conclusions were drawn concerning the different reaction mechanisms. The properties of the polymers were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry.

    Notes: A self-consistent field (SCF) theory for the adsorption of polyelectrolyte chains onto oppositely charged spheres is considered. It is demonstrated that the criterion for critical adsorption shows a different behavior for small and large curvature of the surface. Experiments give indeed evidence for the power-law behavior as theoretically predicted for large curvature.

    Notes: In this paper we report on the synthesis and characterization of ABC-triblock copolymers poly(N-vinylcarbazole)-block-poly(4-(1-pyrenyl)butyl vinyl ether)-block-poly(2-[4-(2-phenyl-1,3,4-oxdiazolyl)phenyloxy]ethyl vinyl ether) 15. The ABC-triblock copolymers were synthesized by sequential living cationic polymerization of N-vinylcarbazole 11, 4-(1-pyrenyl)butyl vinyl ether 10 and 2-chloroethyl vinyl ether 3. In a second step, the reactive pendant chloro groups of the poly(2-chloroethyl vinyl ether) segment of the block copolymers were substituted with 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-5-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole 6 to form fully functionalized ABC'-triblock copolymers. The molecular weight of the block copolymers varied from Mn = 4800 to 14000. The thermal behavior is discussed with respect to the block copolymer composition and compared with corresponding polymer blends. LED characteristics of a single layer device for one of the block copolymers are presented as an example.

    Notes: Agaricus bisporus, Fusarium graminearum, Phycomyces blakesleeanus, unbleached and bleached, Rhizomucor miehei, and Rhizopus oryzae were examined as sources of fungal chitin/chitosan. The nitrogen content of the alkali-treated mycelia/sporangiophores obtained after optimization of culture conditions, and of similarly treated A. bisporus stipes, was 2.87, 1.29, 6.27, 6.50, 4.80, and 4.95% w/w, respectively, which relates to an estimated chitin content of 42, 19, 91, 94, 70, and 72%, respectively. The hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-generating ability of the treated fungal materials after 8 h at pH 7.4 and 37°C decreased in the order R. oryzae 〉 P. blakesleeanus unbleached ≈ R. miehi 〉 F. graminearum 〉 A. bisporus 〉 P. blakesleeanus bleached. This did not correlate with estimated chitin content. The effect of these fungal materials on the rate of proliferation of murine L929 fibroblasts in culture also was examined. Both pro- and antiproliferant effects were observed. Significant (P 〈 .05) proproliferant effects were observed on day 6 with R. miehei, R. oryzae, and P. blakesleeanus (unbleached and bleached) at 0.01% w/v. The greatest antiproliferant effect was observed with R. oryzae at 0.05% w/v on day 6 (-63% relative to the control, P 〈 .05; cell viability, 95%). In contrast, A. bisporus failed to affect cell yield significantly at either 0.01 or 0.05% w/v. Addition of catalase to cultures containing R. oryzae or R. miehei at 0.05% w/v failed to abolish the antiproliferant effect on day 3, instead producing a small but significant (P 〈 .05) increase in the effect. Catalase also failed to affect significantly the antiproliferant effect of F. graminearum at 0.05% w/v, but did abolish the proproliferant effect of P. blakesleeanus (unbleached and bleached) on day 3. Overall, our results suggest that the H2O2 being generated by the fungal materials modulates cell proliferation but that this effect is superimposed upon a H2O2-independent antiproliferant effect manifesting itself at the higher concentrations of fungal material. The antiproliferant effect was not attributable to Ca2+, Mg2+, or Fe2+ depletion although chelation of Fe2+ did correlate with H2O2-generating ability. Only P. blakesleeanus appears to lack this antiproliferant activity while retaining H2O2-generating activity. These results may aid the selection of fungal chitin/chitosan for further evaluation as a potential wound management material. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Biomed Mater Res, 39, 300-307, 1998.

    Notes: Results obtained from scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with energy-dispersive X-ray imaging (EDX) and from Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS) of implanted and multilayered structures are compared in order to demonstrate the depth profiling capabilities of both analysis methods, especially at interfaces. Typical samples for dilute and concentrated systems are compared. The dilute system is represented by Ge nano-clusters in an amorphous SiO2 matrix on a Si substrate produced by ion implantation and subsequent annealing. The concentrated system of alternating Ag-Al multilayers (typical thickness ∽200 nm) is produced by evaporation on Si substrates under high vacuum conditions. A significant advantage of STEM-EDX is the two-dimensional mapping and depth profiling of light and heavier elements in heavy-Z substrates (depth scale in nanometres) without the lack of a deteriorating depth resolution at increasing depth, as happens in RBS. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
