Notes: In this article a conformational analysis of the D-alanyl-D-alanine dipeptide, both charged and neutral, has been carried out. The preferred conformations were determined by means of ab initio and semiempirical quantum, together with empirical force field calculations. The AMBER* force field and the 6-31 + G** and 6-31G** ab initio levels give rise to a coincident minimum energy structure, which, on the other hand, differs from that determined by AM1, 3-21 + G, and 3-21G. The solvent effect on the different charged and neutral conformations have been considered through the AMSOL semiempirical method. A quantification regarding the structural similarities between the different dipeptide conformations and the ampicillin has been performed. The results show that the best overlay is attained by the minimum structure energy obtained by using the 6-31 + G** methodology, which presents a planar amidic nitrogen. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: Natural free carboxylic acids from the hadromerid sponge Diacarnus levii (Kelly-Borges and Vacelet) were esterified to yield the new cyclic norditerpene peroxides ent-muqubilin benzyl ester (= (αR,3S,6R)-α,6-dimethyl-6-[(E)-4-methyl-6-(2,6,6-trimethyl-cyclohex-1-en-1-yl)hex-3-enyl]-1,2-dioxan-3-acetic acid benzyl ester; 6, diacarnoate B methyl ester(= (αS,3R,6R)-α,6-dimethyl-6-{2-(4aS,8aS)-3,4,4a,5,6,7,8,8a-octahydro-3-oxo-2,5,5,8a-tetramethylnaphthalen-1-yl)ethyl}-1,2-dioxan-3-acetic acid methyl ester; 9), and deoxydiacarnoate B benzyl ester (= (αS,3R,6R)-α,6-dimethyl-6-{2-[(4aS,8aS)-3,4,4a,5,6,7,8,8a-octahydro-2,5,5,8a-tetramethyl-1-naphthalenyl]ethyl}-1,2-dioxan-3-acetic acid benzyl ester; 10), which were isolated following extensive chromatography. The relative configuration of the peroxide/α-methylacetate moiety of 6, 9, and 10, was directly determined from their NMR spectra. The absolute configurations of the peroxide/α-methylacetate moiety was deduced from comparative 1H-NMR data of the (S)- and (R)-phenylglycine methyl ester derivatives 7 and 8 as well as 11/13 and 12/14, all obtained from a mixture of the precursors of 3, 6, and 10. The absolute configuration at the carbobicyclic moiety of enone 9 and of 10, is identical, as established by chemical interconversion, 9 and 10 belong to the normal labdane series according to empirical CD rules, applied either directly to 9 or to the parent (+)-sclareolide-derived enone 20. In contrast, molar rotation additivity rules suggest the ent-labdane configuration for 9 and 10. The epidioxides 1-3, 6, and 10 proved active in vitro against the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum; especially the previously isolated methyl 3-epinuapapuanoate (2) was active against a chloroquine-resistant strain, and this with a good security index.

Notes: The PM3(tm) semiempirical method has been used to optimize the structures for the reactants and transition states of the first and second ethylene insertion processes into zirconocene catalytic systems. The results obtained for these reactions are compared with calculations published in the literature performed at different ab-initio theoretical levels. The agreement between our calculations and those reported in the literature is satisfactory. Taking advantage of the reduced computational effort required in semiempirical calculations two additional processes related with the so-called comonomer effect were also studied: ethylene/1-hexene copolymerization, and chain termination reaction, both in the homopolymerization and in copolymerization of ethylene with 1-hexene comonomer. The calculated activation energies support some experimental findings such as the higher polymerization activities in the presence of comonomers and also the molecular weight reduction of the copolymers due to the more favorable β-elimination reactions. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: For preparing tris(γ-lactone) 3 the mono(γ-lactone) 6 was synthesized from the dichlorodiol 12 (99.8% ee). Bisepoxide 9 - derived from dichlorodiol 12 (99.8% ee) - was ring-opened with the Gilman cuprate from 2-lithio-1,5-hexadiene and CuI giving almost exclusively the monoepoxide 21; in five more steps, γ-lactone 30 with the same stereotriad as the target molecule 6 but a different protecting group was obtained. Monoepoxide 33 - also derived from dichlorodiol 12 - was ring-opened with the same Gilman cuprate affording compound 35. It was transformed into the correctly protected γ-lactone 6 in seven steps, key reactions being the ozonolysis 35 → 36 and the diastereoselective reduction 36 → anti-37.

Notes: A spectroscopic (UV-vis, Fourier transform IR, steady state, and time-resolved fluorescence) study of the interactions of the ground and excited singlet states of harmane (1-methyl-9H-pyrido/3,4-b/indole) with quinoline has been carried out in cyclohexane, toluene, and buffered pH = 8.7 aqueous solutions. To analyze how the number of rings in the substrate influences these interactions, pyridine and phenanthridine have also been included in this study. In cyclohexane and toluene 1 : 1 stoichiometric hydrogen-bonded complexes are formed in both the ground and the excited singlet states. As the number of rings of the benzopyridines and the solvent polarity increase hydrogen-bonding interactions weaken and π-π van der Waals interactions become apparent. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
