Notes: Abstract  Hindustan Polymers Limited was established in the Venkatapuram area in the northwestern part of Visakhapatnam urban agglomeration. Untreated industrial effluent from the plant is discharged with total dissolved solids concentrations reaching up to 6500 mg/l. The groundwater pollution was identified as early as 1981 and a hydrogeologic and water-quality database is available from 1981. The groundwater quality in the plant environs is found to be in the range of 3500–4500 mg/l. Major chemical constituents of industrial-waste waters consist of Na, Cl, and SO4. Some characteristic parameters of the aquifer were estimated. The available hydrogeologic and hydrologic data was analyzed to conceptualize the groundwater regime. A mathematical groundwater flow model was constructed to compute the hydraulic head at the center of finite-difference grid. The computed head distribution and effective porosity of the formations were used to calculate the groundwater flow velocity. The computed velocity field was ultimately used to prognose the pollutant migration in groundwater accounting for the advection and dispersion processes in the mass transport model and for determining the time-dependent pathlines of pollutant. Areal migration of pollutants from the source was predicted up to year 2002.

Notes: Abstract This paper discusses the analysis of a single server finite queue with Poisson arrival and arbitrary service time distribution, wherein the arrival rates are state dependent which are all distinct or all equal, service times are conditioned on the system length at the moment of service initiation. The analytic analysis of the queue is carried out and the final results have been presented in the form of recursive equations which can be easily programmed on any PC to obtain the distributions of number of customers in the system at arbitrary, departure and pre-arrival epochs. It is shown that the method works for all service time distributions including the non-phase type and also for low and high values of the model parameters. Some performance measures, and relations among the state probabilities at arbitrary, departure and pre-arrival epochs are also discussed. Furthermore, it is shown that results for a number of queueing models can be obtained from this model as special cases. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our method some numerical examples have been presented.

Notes: Abstract: Cohen and Sweeter (1975) found the 20 to 22-year Hale (double sunspot) cycle signal in the maximum entropy spectra of sunspot and Atlantic tropical cyclone data. Currie (1996) corroborated and extended their analysis, but he argued that this signal is the 18.6-year luni-solar tidal constituent. Currie maintains that Cohen and Sweeter mistakenly conjectured that this long term periodicity was induced by the 20 to 22-year Hale cycle signal. However, no further investigation of periodicity in the extracted wave forms corresponding to the 18.6-year luni-solar signal was conducted. In this study, we follow Currie's signal processing procedures to extract the wave forms corresponding to the 18.6-year luni-solar signal. In order to investigate the periodicity in the extracted wave forms, multi-taper method (MTM) is used for harmonic analysis. Band pass filters are then designed to extract the wave forms corresponding to the individual components identified in the MTM harmonic analysis. The investigation results of the monthly precipitation and Palmer's drought severity index (PDSI) data in three of the midwestern states – Illinois, Indiana and Ohio – show that two periodic components, the 20 to 22-year Hale cycle signal and the other component with periods between 16.9 and 13.5 years, are identified. The bistability phenomenon, which Currie found in these wave forms, is more likely to result from the superposition of these two periodic components, rather than from a nonlinear mechanism. Besides, a periodic component with an approximate period of 33 years is detected.

Notes: Abstract Al2O3 was modified with TiO2 and ZrO2 using organometallic precursors and is used in the preparation of supported platinum catalysts. The catalysts have been characterised by nitrogen adsorption, hydrogen chemisorption and X-ray diffraction and were tested for their activity in the hydrodechlorination of chlorobenzene. The investigations show that support modification controls the catalyst deactivation remarkably and the catalysts were found to be highly active and selective.

Notes: Abstract The selective vapour-phase synthesis of 2-methylquinoline by alkylation of quinoline with methanol was carried out over HY, HZSM-5(30), CrHY, CeHY, LaHY, LaKHY and CeHZSM-5(30) zeolites in a fixed-bed reactor at atmospheric pressure. The yields of 2-methylquinoline over modified zeolites, especially those of doubly promoted LaKHY, were found to be higher than those of unmodified zeolites. The maximum yield of 2-methylquinoline obtained was 60.6 wt% at 91.5 wt% selectivity over LaKHY zeolite. The active sites responsible for this methylation were found to be more on Lewis acidic sites available over zeolite systems.

Notes: Abstract The solubility of calcium isosaccharinate Ca(ISA)2(c) was determined at 23°C as a function of pH (1–14) and calcium ion molality (0.03–0.52). The similarity of solubility from the over- and undersaturation directions for different equilibration periods indicated that equilibrium in these solutions was reached rapidly (〈 7 days) and that these data can be used to develop thermodynamic equilibrium constants. The solubility data were interpreted using the Pitzer ion–interaction model. The logarithms of the thermodynamic equilibrium constants determined from these data were 1.30 for the dominant reaction at pH 〈 4.5 [Ca(ISA)2(c) + 2H+ ⇌ Ca2+ + 2HISA(aq)], and −2.22 for the dominant reaction at 4.5 [Ca(ISA)2(c)+ ⇌ Ca(ISA)2(aq)]. In addition, the logarithm of the dissociation constant of HISA [HISA(aq) ⇌ ISA- + H+] was calculated to be −4.46.

Notes: Abstract: Collinear laser spectroscopy experiments in the LuI transition 5d6s2 2D3/2→ 5d6s6p 2D3/2 were performed on all lutetium isotopes in the range of 161-179Lu. The nuclear spins, magnetic moments and quadrupole moments were determined from the hyperfine structures observed for 19 ground states and 11 isomers. Variations in the mean square charge radii as a function of neutron number were obtained from the isotope shifts. These data considerably extend the systematics of the properties of nuclei in the upper rare-earth region. A particular feature is the appearance of high-spin and low-spin ground states and isomeric states in the vicinity of the stable 175Lu, partly arising from aligned neutron pairs. The results clearly show that the deformation properties are nearly independent of the occupancy and the coupling of single-particle states. Theoretical predictions of deformation are confirmed in a consistent description of the measured radii and quadrupole moments. For all observed states, the spins and magnetic moments allow the assignment of rather pure Nilsson configurations.
