Notes: Palladium-catalyzed polycondensation between 2,5-diiodo-3-hexylthiophene I-Th(Hex)-I with mixtures of p-diethynylbenzene HC≡C - Ph - C≡CH and α,ω-diethynylalkane HC≡C(CH2)lC≡CH (l = 3 or 8) gives poly(aryleneethynylene) PAE-type copolymers [C≡C(CH2)lC≡C - Th(Hex)]m[C≡C - Ph - C≡C - Th(Hex)]n containing the methylene unit. The copolymers have a molecular weight (Mn) of about 1.2 × 104 as determined by GPC (polystyrene standard) and are considered to possess essentially a random sequences in view of the  - C≡C(CH2)lC≡C -  and  - C≡C - Ph - C≡C -  units as judged from their UV-visible spectra. By the incorporation of the (CH2)l unit, the λmax position of the corresponding PAE homopolymer [C≡C - Ph - C≡C - Th(Hex)]n is shifted to a shorter wavelength. However, the copolymers give rise to a photoluminescence PL peak essentially agreeing with a PL peak of the homopolymer, suggesting occurrence of energy transfer in the copolymer. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: Five cerebrosides, CE-1-1, CE-1-2, CE-1-3, CE-3-1, and CE-3-2, and a ganglioside molecular species CG-1 have been obtained from the less polar and polar fractions, respectively, of the chloroform/methanol extract of the sea cucumber Cucumaria echinata. The structures of these glycosphingolipids have been determined on the basis of chemical and spectroscopic evidence. The cerebrosides show lethality toward brine shrimps. On the other hand, the ganglioside CG-1 exhibits neuritogenic activity toward the rat pheochromocytoma cell line, PC-12 cells.

Notes: Separation of the 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone (PMP) derivatives of simple disaccharides (maltose, cellobiose, gentiobiose, lactose, and melibiose) by affinity capillary electrophoresis was investigated using lectin-containing neutral phosphate buffers, filled in a linear polyacrylamide-coated capillary. When Lens culinaris agglutinin (LCA) was added, the derivatives of glucobioses were retarded with varying magnitudes depending on the amount of LCA and were well separated from each other and from galactosyl glucose under optimized conditions. Addition of Ricinus communis 60 kDa agglutinin (RCA60) to the phosphate buffer gave a different migration profile, in which the derivatives of galactosyl glucoses were more retarded than those of glucobioses. However, addition of either lectin did not accomplish complete separation of the derivatives of all these disaccharides even under optimum conditions. The addition of two kinds of lectins in appropriate proportions improved separation. Thus, the binary system composed of LCA and RCA60, as well as LCA and soybean agglutinin from Glycine max (SBA), gave better separation of these derivatives, giving peak tops for all derivatives.

Notes: This review summarizes publications on capillary electrophoresis (CE) of carbohydrates, covering almost all hitherto published papers on this topic. It is designed to be a convenient tool for the literature search by providing a comprehensive table. Since CE analysis of carbohydrates is generally complicated due to the structural diversity of carbohydrate species, an attempt is made in this table to supply detailed information on the analyzed form (underivatized or derivatized, type of derivative) and analytical conditions (capillary size, state of the inner wall, composition of the electrophoretic solution, applied voltage, detection method, etc.), for each combination of carbohydrate species to be analyzed. In addition, a brief overview is presented to help in the literature search.

Notes: The preparation of organic-inorganic polymer hybrids consisting of carbon-carbon and siloxane chains was investigated by radical polymerization of 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MAS) followed by acid-catalyzed hydrolytic polycondensation. The condensation of poly(3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane) (S-PMA) of various molecular weights Mn =830-12000 prepared by polyaddition provided transparent and flexible free-standing hybrid gel films. The mechanical properties of these films were highly dependent on the carbon-carbon chain length: with an increase in the carbon-carbon chain length, the elasticity of gel films increased, while the tensile strength and Young's modulus decreased. Hydrolyzability of S-PMA decreased with an increase in the carbon-carbon chain length, resulting in the formation of rubber-like films with flexibility. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: 1-Phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone (PMP) derivatives of component monosaccharides in glycoproteins (fucose, galactose, mannose, N-acetylgalactosamine and N-acetylglucosamine) and epimeric aldopentoses (arabinose, lyxose, ribose and xylose) were well separated from each other by capillary electrochromatography on a Hypersil ODS column with a mixture of 50 mM N-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazine-2′-(2-ethanesulfonic acid) buffer, pH 6.0 to ∼ 6.3, and acetonitrile (2.2:1 v/v) as eluent. The elution of these compounds showed relatively strong dependence on the pH and concentration of the buffer salts contained in the eluent, as compared to the elution by pressure-driven high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) on the same stationary phase, but separation of PMP-monosaccharides was better than that by HPLC. Retention times of PMP-monosaccharides were highly reproducible with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of ∼ 0.6%, and quantification with an RSD less than 5% could be achieved using 3-O-methylglucose as an internal standard.

Description: Reconstruction of the Photon Factory storage ring (PF ring; 2.5 GeV) is now in progress to provide very brilliant synchrotron radiation to users, i.e. the emittance is being reduced by a factor of five. Components, such as the quadrupole and sextupole magnets, vacuum chambers, beamlines and beam-position monitors, are being replaced by new ones in 16 normal-cell sections of the PF ring. The accelerating cavities, injection systems and control systems are also being replaced. Operation will commence when the improvements are completed on 1 October 1997.

Description: At the 2.5 GeV ring of the Photon Factory, a single-pass beam-position monitor (BPM) system is being prepared for the storage ring and the beam transport line. In the storage ring, the injected beam position during the first several turns can be measured with a single injection pulse. The BPM system has an adequate performance, useful for the commissioning of the new low-emittance lattice. Several stripline BPMs are being installed in the beam transport line. The continuous monitoring of the orbit in the beam transport line will be useful for the stabilization of the injection energy as well as the injection beam orbit.
