    Notizen: The preparation and characterization of five new imidazabole derivatives is reported: 1,5-dibenzyl-4,4,8,8-tetrahydroimidazabole (2), 4,4,8,8-tetrafluoro-1,5-dimethylimidazabole (3), 4,4-difluoro-8,8-dihydro-1,5-dimethylimidazabole (4), 4,4,8,8-tetrachloro-1,5-dimethylimidazabole (5), and 4,4,8,8-tetraethyl-1,5-dimethylimidazabole (6). The structures of compounds 2-6 as dimeric carbene-borane adducts rather than dimeric N-borane adducts are discussed on the basis of NMR (2-6) and X-ray diffraction data (2, 3, 5 and 6).

    Notizen: Two poly(ester amides) containing three methoxy groups stereoregularly attached to the main chain have been prepared by using naturally occurring L-arabinose and D-xylose as the starting materials. The polymers were prepared by the active ester polycondensation method and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, and 1H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopies. Both viscosimetry and GPC were used to estimate the molecular weights. The polymers are hydrophilic, one of them being water soluble, and exhibited moderate optical activity. Thermal and X-ray diffraction studies revealed that they are slightly crystalline and stable up to 250°C under nitrogen. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 36: 67-77, 1998

    Notizen: The PM3(tm) semiempirical method has been used to optimize the structures for the reactants and transition states of the first and second ethylene insertion processes into zirconocene catalytic systems. The results obtained for these reactions are compared with calculations published in the literature performed at different ab-initio theoretical levels. The agreement between our calculations and those reported in the literature is satisfactory. Taking advantage of the reduced computational effort required in semiempirical calculations two additional processes related with the so-called comonomer effect were also studied: ethylene/1-hexene copolymerization, and chain termination reaction, both in the homopolymerization and in copolymerization of ethylene with 1-hexene comonomer. The calculated activation energies support some experimental findings such as the higher polymerization activities in the presence of comonomers and also the molecular weight reduction of the copolymers due to the more favorable β-elimination reactions. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notizen: The square-planar complexes [MR2L2] (M = Pd, Pt; R = 3,5-C6Cl2F3) [L2 = OPPyPh2 (Py = 2-pyridyl); SPPyPh2; OPPy2Ph; DMBI (3,3′-dimethyl-2,2′-biindazole); OPPyPh(NHTol-p); p-TolNPPy2Ph] have been prepared by treating cis-[MR2(THF)2] (THF = tetrahydrofuran) with the appropriate chelate ligands. The 19F-NMR spectra of these complexes show the presence of intramolecular through-space F-F couplings between ortho-fluorine atoms of nonequivalent R groups, which provide information for the assignment of the different ortho-fluorine signals and can be used to study the dynamic behavior of the mentioned complexes such as: a) Rotation of the R group in either Pd or Pt complexes, at the same or at different rates for each R groups depending on the neutral ligand; and b) exchange of the coordination sites of the chelating ligand, either by Berry or by turnstile mechanisms. The activation parameters for some of the processes are given.

    Notizen: Escherichia coli strains devoid of one or both of the two pyruvate kinase isoenzymes (PKA and PKF), were grown on minimal media in batch fermentations. The strain lacking both PKs showed a 28% decrease on its specific growth rate when compared to the wild type. However, protein and CO2 yields did not change. Using radioactive 1-C14 glucose and collecting the CO2 produced by the cultures, it was found that the mutant lacking both pyruvate kinases, metabolized glucose mainly through the pentose pathway (PP). The increased participation of the PP in glucose metabolism in this strain, was also reflected on the levels of the glucose-6-phosphate and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenases.© 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notizen: A flow injection procedure for the indirect chemiluminescent determination of isoniazid is proposed. The method is performed in a flow-injection manifold provided with a solid-phase reactor. The reactor was made from manganese dioxide physically entrapped by polymerization; the redox reaction isoniazid-manganese dioxide released Mn(II) which was monitored through its inhibitory effect on the reaction between luminol and hydrogen peroxide in presence of potassium hexacyanoferrate(III). The procedure resulted in a linear calibration graph over the range 5-15 mg/L of isoniazid with a sample throughput of 43 samples/h. The influence of foreign compounds was studied and the method was applied to determination of the drug in a pharmaceutical formulation. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notizen: The surface of a synthetic vulcanized styrene-butadiene rubber (R2) was treated in an oxygen plasma to improve adhesion in joints prepared with a one-component solvent-based polyester-urethane adhesive. The modifications produced on the rubber surface by plasma treatment were assessed using advancing and receding contact angle measurements, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, (XPS), infrared-attenuated total reflection spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Adhesion was obtained from T-peel tests of treated R2 rubber/polyurethane adhesive joints. Several experimental variables were considered, such as the radio-frequency power and the length and lifetime of the plasma treatment. The treatment in the oxygen plasma produced a noticeable decrease in contact angle, which can be mainly ascribed to the creation of C—O and C=O moieties on the rubber surface. Advancing and receding contact angles only differed by ∽10°. Depending on the experimental conditions used, some ablation was produced on the surface, which was more noticeable as the length and power of the treatment increased. An adequate performance of adhesive joints was obtained using a power of 50 W and a time for oxygen plasma treatment of 〈10 min. The changes in the rubber surface remained for 2 h after plasma treatment, as indicated by the variation in peel strength and XPS data. Although improved adhesion was obtained by treating the rubber in an oxygen plasma, the T-peel strength values are not sufficient to assure technical use, probably due to the migration of waxes and zinc stearate to the surface once the treatment was carried out. Finally, sulfur oxidation was produced by the plasma treatment, and for severe conditions solid crystals of a sodium salt of an oxidized sulfur compound (sodium sulphate or an organic sulphate) appeared on the treated rubber surface. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
