    Notes: We report an efficient method to load atoms into a magneto-optical trap. A resistively heated alkali metal dispenser, which is mounted close to the trapping region, serves as a compact, pulsed source for Rb atoms. The atoms are captured by the magneto-optical trap within less than 3 s at a loading rate of more than 107 atoms per second. The lifetime of the trapped atoms exceeds the filling time by about 30 s. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract. The mature, functional sieve-tube system in higher plants is dependent upon protein import from the companion cells to maintain a functional long-distance transport system. Soluble proteins present within the sieve-tube lumen were investigated by analysis of sieve-tube exudates which revealed the presence of distinct sets of polypeptides in seven monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plant species. Antibodies directed against sieve-tube exudate proteins from Ricinus communis L. demonstrated the presence of shared antigens in the phloem sap collected from Triticum aestivum L., Oryza sativa L., Yucca filamentosa L., Cucurbita maxima Duch., Robinia pseudoacacia L. and Tilia platyphyllos L. Specific antibodies were employed to identify major polypeptides. Molecular chaperones related to Rubisco-subunit-binding protein and cyclophilin, as well as ubiquitin and the redox proteins, thioredoxin h and glutaredoxin, were detected in the sieve-tube exudate of all species examined. Actin and profilin, a modulator of actin polymerization, were also present in all analyzed phloem exudates. However, some proteins were highly species-specific, e.g. cystatin, a protease-inhibitor was present in R. communis but was not detected in exudates from other species, and orthologs of the well-known squash phloem lectin, phloem protein 2, were only identified in the sieve-tube exudate of R. communis and R. pseudoacacia. These findings are discussed in terms of the likely roles played by phloem proteins in the maintenance and function of the enucleate sieve-tube system of higher plants.

    Notes: Abstract Objective: To compare the venodilator potencies of the phosphodiesterase (PDE) III inhibitors amrinone and enoximone with the unspecific PDE inhibitors theophylline and pentoxifylline in human hand veins in vivo. Methods: Eighteen healthy nonsmokers (16 men and two women) were studied using the dorsal hand vein technique. After preconstriction with the selective α1-adrenergic-receptor agonist phenylephrine dose–response curves were constructed for amrinone (1–270 μg · min−1), enoximone (1–270 μg · min−1), theophylline (5–1500 μg · min−1) and pentoxifylline (2–877 μg · min−1) in a random order on separate occasions. Due to limitation in the maximum dose infused in order to avoid systemic effects, full dose–response curves could not be constructed for pentoxifylline. In this case, the individual dose of pentoxifylline and theophylline producing 50% venodilation were compared. Results: All PDE inhibitors induced dose-dependent venodilation. The value of maximum venodilation was the same for amrinone, enoximone and theophylline. The infusion rate needed to induce 50% of maximum venodilation (ED50) was not significantly different for amrinone (geometric mean, 8.8 μg · min−1) and enoximone (14.2 μg · min−1), whereas the ED50 of theophylline (84.0 μg · min−1) was significantly higher than either amrinone or enoximone. The dose necessary to dilate the vein to 50% the maximum dilation (as determined during sodium chloride infusion) was significantly higher for pentoxifylline than for theophylline (409 vs 71 μg · min−1). Conclusions: These findings demonstrate that enoximone and amrinone have similar venodilatory potency which is six times higher than that of theophylline. The least potent vasodilator in this study was pentoxifylline.

    Notes: Gegenwärtig laufen zwei große Wandlungsprozesse gleichzeitig ab: Zum einen der Übergang zur Informationsgesellschaft, zum anderen die weltweite vielfältige Anstrengung, eine nachhaltige Lebensweise aufzubauen. Das klassische Konzept der Nachhaltigkeit stellt sich bei näherer Betrachtung als vielfältig, kompliziert und in sich widersprüchlich heraus. Die Nachhaltigkeit hängt auf zweifache Weise mit der Evolution zusammen: Zum einen kann es Nachhaltigkeit nur geben, wenn diese neben einem Bewahren zugleich eine Evolution – und damit auch eventuelle Verluste an Bestehendem – beinhaltet. Und zum anderen muß sich der Begriff als solcher entwickeln. Gegenwärtig genießen die Wirtschaft und die Schaffung neuer Arbeitsplätze weltweit die erste Priorität. Selbst ein so vorrangiges Ziel wie die Nachhaltigkeit wird dabei zurückgestellt. Jedoch ist eine Vielzahl von Anstrengungen erfolgreich, die die Umweltverträglicheit und Nachhaltigkeit der Wirtschaft, ihrer Produkte und Verfahren verbessern. Welche Folgen sind dabei für das Konzept einer nachhaltigen Regionalentwicklung zu beachten?

    Notes: Abstract The efficiency of physical concentration mechanisms for enrichment of algae and bacteria in newly formed sea-ice was investigated under defined conditions in the laboratory. Sea-ice formation was simulated in a 3,000 l tank under different patterns of water movement. When ice formed in an artificially generated current pattern, algal cells were substantially enriched within the ice matrix. Enrichment factors for chlorophyll a calculated from the ratio between the concentrations in ice and underlying water reached values of up to 53. Repeated mixing of ice crystals into the water column, as well as flow of water through the new ice layer, contributed to the enrichment of algae in the ice. Wave action during ice formation revealed lower phytoplankton enrichment factors of up to 9. Mixing of floating ice crystals with underlying water and pumping of water into the ice matrix by periodical expansion and compression of the slush ice layer were responsible for the wave-induced enrichment of algal cells. Physical enrichment of bacteria within the ice was negligible. Bacterial biomass within new ice was enhanced only when the concentration of algae was high. At low algal biomass, bacteria experienced substantial losses in the ice, most likely due to brine drainage, which were not observed for the microalgae. Bacterial cells are therefore not scavenged by ice crystals and the observed enrichment and sustainment of bacterial biomass within newly formed ice depend on their attachment to cells or aggregates of algae. Division rates of bacteria changed only slightly during ice formation.

    Notes: Abstract The scaling behavior of the SO(3) irreducible amplitudes $$d_n^1 (r)$$ of velocity structure tensors is numerically examined for Navier–Stokes turbulence. Here, l characterizes the irreducible representation by the index of the corresponding Legendre polynomial, and n denotes the tensorial rank, i.e., the order of the moment. For moments of different order n but with the same representation index l extended self-similarity (ESS) towards large scales is found. Intermittency seems to increase with l. We estimate that a crossover behavior between different inertial subrange scaling regimes in the longitudinal and transversal structure functions will hardly be detectable for achievable Reynolds numbers.
