Notes: In this article a conformational analysis of the D-alanyl-D-alanine dipeptide, both charged and neutral, has been carried out. The preferred conformations were determined by means of ab initio and semiempirical quantum, together with empirical force field calculations. The AMBER* force field and the 6-31 + G** and 6-31G** ab initio levels give rise to a coincident minimum energy structure, which, on the other hand, differs from that determined by AM1, 3-21 + G, and 3-21G. The solvent effect on the different charged and neutral conformations have been considered through the AMSOL semiempirical method. A quantification regarding the structural similarities between the different dipeptide conformations and the ampicillin has been performed. The results show that the best overlay is attained by the minimum structure energy obtained by using the 6-31 + G** methodology, which presents a planar amidic nitrogen. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: Natural free carboxylic acids from the hadromerid sponge Diacarnus levii (Kelly-Borges and Vacelet) were esterified to yield the new cyclic norditerpene peroxides ent-muqubilin benzyl ester (= (αR,3S,6R)-α,6-dimethyl-6-[(E)-4-methyl-6-(2,6,6-trimethyl-cyclohex-1-en-1-yl)hex-3-enyl]-1,2-dioxan-3-acetic acid benzyl ester; 6, diacarnoate B methyl ester(= (αS,3R,6R)-α,6-dimethyl-6-{2-(4aS,8aS)-3,4,4a,5,6,7,8,8a-octahydro-3-oxo-2,5,5,8a-tetramethylnaphthalen-1-yl)ethyl}-1,2-dioxan-3-acetic acid methyl ester; 9), and deoxydiacarnoate B benzyl ester (= (αS,3R,6R)-α,6-dimethyl-6-{2-[(4aS,8aS)-3,4,4a,5,6,7,8,8a-octahydro-2,5,5,8a-tetramethyl-1-naphthalenyl]ethyl}-1,2-dioxan-3-acetic acid benzyl ester; 10), which were isolated following extensive chromatography. The relative configuration of the peroxide/α-methylacetate moiety of 6, 9, and 10, was directly determined from their NMR spectra. The absolute configurations of the peroxide/α-methylacetate moiety was deduced from comparative 1H-NMR data of the (S)- and (R)-phenylglycine methyl ester derivatives 7 and 8 as well as 11/13 and 12/14, all obtained from a mixture of the precursors of 3, 6, and 10. The absolute configuration at the carbobicyclic moiety of enone 9 and of 10, is identical, as established by chemical interconversion, 9 and 10 belong to the normal labdane series according to empirical CD rules, applied either directly to 9 or to the parent (+)-sclareolide-derived enone 20. In contrast, molar rotation additivity rules suggest the ent-labdane configuration for 9 and 10. The epidioxides 1-3, 6, and 10 proved active in vitro against the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum; especially the previously isolated methyl 3-epinuapapuanoate (2) was active against a chloroquine-resistant strain, and this with a good security index.

Notes: We consider the thermoelastic plate system,utt-γΔutt+Δ2u+αΔθ=0,θt-κΔθ-αΔut=0 and we make a comparison between the models in which γ=0 and γ〉0. We conclude that in the first case the plate system is of a parabolic type, while when γ〉0 the corresponding system has a hyperbolic behaviour. © 1998 B. G. Notes: The PM3(tm) semiempirical method has been used to optimize the structures for the reactants and transition states of the first and second ethylene insertion processes into zirconocene catalytic systems. The results obtained for these reactions are compared with calculations published in the literature performed at different ab-initio theoretical levels. The agreement between our calculations and those reported in the literature is satisfactory. Taking advantage of the reduced computational effort required in semiempirical calculations two additional processes related with the so-called comonomer effect were also studied: ethylene/1-hexene copolymerization, and chain termination reaction, both in the homopolymerization and in copolymerization of ethylene with 1-hexene comonomer. The calculated activation energies support some experimental findings such as the higher polymerization activities in the presence of comonomers and also the molecular weight reduction of the copolymers due to the more favorable β-elimination reactions. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: New homo- and heterometallic hexanuclear complexes of formula {[Cu(tmen)(H2O)]2[Cu(tmen)]2[Cu2L](H2O)}(ClO4)4 ·2 H2O [Cu6-tmen] {[Cu(pmdien)]4[Cu2L]}(ClO4)4 · 4 H2O [Cu6-pmdien] and {[Ni(cyclam)]4[Cu2L]}(ClO4)4 · 4 H2O [Cu2Ni4-cyclam] [H8L = tetrakis(aminomethylene)methanetetrakis(oxamic acid), tmen = N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine, pmdien = N,N,N′,N′,N″-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine, and cyclam = 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane] have been synthesized. The crystal structure of [Cu6-tmen] has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure consists of cationic {[Cu(tmen)(H2O)]2[Cu(tmen)]2[Cu2L](H2O)}4+ hexanuclear units. The hexanuclear cation is made up of two symmetry-related oxamato-bridged trinuclear units connected through the central carbon atom C(6) of the L8- ligand. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements (1.8-300 K) have been performed for these series of complexes including the dinuclear precursors of formula Na4[Cu2L] · 10.5 H2O [Cu2-Na], (NMe4)4[Cu2L] · 4 H2O [Cu2-NMe4] and (PPh4)4[Cu2L] · 6 H2O [Cu2-PPh4]. The magnetic data have been interpreted. Evidence of a weak intramolecular ferromagnetic interaction between the two CuII ions in [Cu2L]4- has been observed. For the hexanuclear species, the interaction through the oxamato bridge was found to be equal to -6790, -2650, and -1643 yJ (-342, -133, and -82 cm-1) for [Cu6-tmen], [Cu6-pmdien], and [Cu2Ni4-cyclam], respectively. In these complexes, the weak intramolecular ferromagnetic coupling between the two CuII ions within the dinuclear synthon was masked by intermolecular interactions or local anisotropy.

Notes: ---The addition reaction between the P-H bond of tetraoxyspirophosphoranes 1-2 and long-chain imines 3a-h (decyl, dodecyl, tetradecyl, hexadecyl, octadecyl, and oleyl imines) occurs instantaneously at room temperature. It is diastereoselective, and quantitatively leads to the corresponding (α-aminoalkyl)spirophosphoranes 4a-h and 5e. The influence of the pentacoordinated phosphorus atom on the stereoselectivity of the Pudovik reaction might be attributed to the involvement of the rigid spirophosphoranide (PV) intermediate in the addition reaction. Selective and one-pot hydrolysis of these P-C bond spirophosphoranes readily proceeds either at room temperature in the presence of moist solvents to give the corresponding carboxyalkyl (α-aminoalkyl)phosphonic acid monoesters 6a-h and 7e, or the reaction may be carried out in the presence of 20% aqueous hydrochloric acid under reflux, to afford the free (α-aminoalkyl)phosphonic acid amphiphiles 8a-h in high yields. In contrast to their sodium salts, these single- and double-chained free and monoester phosphonic acid amphiphiles exist as zwitterions and are not soluble in water.

Notes: For preparing tris(γ-lactone) 3 the mono(γ-lactone) 6 was synthesized from the dichlorodiol 12 (99.8% ee). Bisepoxide 9 - derived from dichlorodiol 12 (99.8% ee) - was ring-opened with the Gilman cuprate from 2-lithio-1,5-hexadiene and CuI giving almost exclusively the monoepoxide 21; in five more steps, γ-lactone 30 with the same stereotriad as the target molecule 6 but a different protecting group was obtained. Monoepoxide 33 - also derived from dichlorodiol 12 - was ring-opened with the same Gilman cuprate affording compound 35. It was transformed into the correctly protected γ-lactone 6 in seven steps, key reactions being the ozonolysis 35 → 36 and the diastereoselective reduction 36 → anti-37.

Notes: The rheological characterization of two commercial thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers based on poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and para-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHB) is carried out. The thermal transitions determined by DMTA are explained by the random character of these copolyesters, in comparison with non-random copolyesters synthesized by Jackson and Kuhfuss. The evolution of the dynamic viscoelastic functions with time in the nematic state is concave in shape for the 20%PET/80%PHB copolymer, a result that leads us to treat this system as a suspension of solid spheres (unmolten crystals) where the volume fraction of crystals increases with time according to an Avrami equation. The response of 40%PET/60%PHB copolymer is similar to a chemical or physical gelation and the hypothesis that the polydomain structure gives rise to a network is considered. Continuous flow, time-independent viscosity results reveal the existence of a three-region flow curve for 40%PET/60%PHB copolymer, but a Newtonian zone followed by a shear thinning region for 20%PET/80%PHB sample. At high temperatures the isotropization of the samples leads to a very strong decrease of the activation energy of flow, which becomes zero for 40%PET/60%PHB. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: A spectroscopic (UV-vis, Fourier transform IR, steady state, and time-resolved fluorescence) study of the interactions of the ground and excited singlet states of harmane (1-methyl-9H-pyrido/3,4-b/indole) with quinoline has been carried out in cyclohexane, toluene, and buffered pH = 8.7 aqueous solutions. To analyze how the number of rings in the substrate influences these interactions, pyridine and phenanthridine have also been included in this study. In cyclohexane and toluene 1 : 1 stoichiometric hydrogen-bonded complexes are formed in both the ground and the excited singlet states. As the number of rings of the benzopyridines and the solvent polarity increase hydrogen-bonding interactions weaken and π-π van der Waals interactions become apparent. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: The Subspace Iteration Method is a popular approach to obtain the dominant eigenvalues and their corresponding eigenvectors of a given matrix. We have applied this method, making use of two Rayleigh-Ritz projections, to obtain the dominant Lambda Modes of a nuclear power reactor. Also, we have developed a variational acceleration technique for this method, and we have stated that this variational acceleration is very convenient, mainly, when the required number of eigenvalues is low. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
